Report: Clay Aiken Considering Run For Congress
January 3, 2014 5:28 AM

RALEIGH, N. Car. (CBS Charlotte) – “American Idol” runner up Clay Aiken is “actively” considering seeking a congressional seat, reports the Washington Blade.

Democratic sources tell the gay publication that Aiken has consulted with political advisors in Washington about a bid to represent North Carolina’s 2nd district.

The 35-year-old came out as a homosexual in 2008, with a highly publicized cover story in People Magazine and has lent his support to LGBT causes.

Aiken, a native of Raleigh, spoke to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and has been meeting with prominent political figures in his home town, according to the Blade.

A source told the publication that it’s unclear when there might be an official announcement but that Aiken was “sounding and acting like a candidate.”

The 2nd congressional district, which includes Raleigh, is currently held by Republican Renee Ellmers.

Former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco is expected to formally announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination next week.

The filing deadline for the Democratic primary is Feb. 28th.

I can think of a former FR poster who would be so disappointed.

Well, that would make him an ideal democrat candidate.

Well I already see a good campaign ad for the incumbent: Stick With Ellmers! She'll Stick With You!

If it's a Republican leaning district, he would be running just to be an attention whore.

The rest of the world knew it in 2003.

Don't underestimate the sheep voting for whatever pop culture icon is put in front of them, no matter the political affiliation.

I honestly don't know and have no intention of YouTubing it. Is it a good singer?

I don't know either. The only thing I know is he was on American Idol. Didn't watch it.

I think it's ridiculous that he is all-of-a-sudden venturing into politics. On his musical side, he has one of the best voices, and you can actually listen to his songs. Maybe he will give free concerts for votes?  :silly:

We had an actor who decided to try his hand at politics once.

IIRC, he did fairly well for himself.

I actually got drawn into Celebrity Apprentice when he was a contestant.  Smart.  Very smart.

Clay Akin is no RR... not even close... plus he's a Democrat.

Yet he still came in second.

Maybe, but I thought wrongly. FWIW

I think he came in second by playing it pretty clever.. he actually raised more money at the final even than Arsenio Hall, but the event Hall put on was deemed more creative so the win went to him instead of Clay Akin.  It was one of the best Celebrity Apprentice programs I can remember because they were closely matched and friendly competitors.
