Top conservatives struggle to escape Trump's clutches

After four years locked in an uncomfortable embrace, leading Republicans and Beltway conservatives are beginning their quest to distance themselves and the GOP from former President Donald Trump, who shows no sign of going anywhere.
It began with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican who helped Trump advance legislation and confirm conservative federal judges, announcing his vote to acquit the ex-president in a speech that sounded more like a conviction. McConnell said Trump’s “wild falsehoods†made him “practically and morally responsible†for the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, calling it a “foreseeable consequence†of the defeated president’s “false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole†about the election, leading to a “manufactured atmosphere of looming catastrophe†that culminated in mob violence as Trump “watched television happily.â€
McConnell followed up with an op-ed arguing that the Constitution, in his view, required Trump’s acquittal due to limits on the impeachment power, even though the then-president’s “behavior during and after the chaos was … unconscionable, from attacking Vice President Mike Pence during the riot to praising the criminals after it ended.â€
The Wall Street Journal editorial page, highly influential among conservatives, praised McConnell for condemning but acquitting Trump and urged the Republican Party to move on from the polarizing reality television star: “Mr. Trump may run again, but he won’t win another national election. ... The country is moving past the Trump presidency, and the GOP will remain in the wilderness until it does too.â€

When did McConnell become a conservative?
Last time I checked the only thing he has ever been interested in conserving is his wealth and political power, and to hell with Americans and Milton Friedman.

Its not Trump, its the public's fondness for America First policies he embodies. There's no getting around it and going back to normal now.

Odd how the RINO's calling themselves Conservative are falling away from Trump after politically knifing him in the back. Like Brutus and the Senators after knifing Caesar, walk away saying" What's the matter with Him ?

McConnell is the Republican minority leader in the Senate. I never saw him as particularly conservative.
As the leader he is the one to make such a move. If he is unsuccessful, he is done.
If you move to execute the king, and are unsuccessful, you are dead. This is centuries old.

It should be a state as well as a federal law that ANYBODY with a "III" be automatically barred from holding political office. Or even be appointed to a political office. It just SCREAMS "Old Family Trust Fund Money",and those people are not to be trusted with our liberties.

You have a point. Trey Gowdy, for an example. Talks a good game on the TeeBee, but little follow-through in the House.
And then there's the three-stick McCain, the worse Senator AZ ever had.

Getting rid of McConnell would be one of of the best things to happen to the GOP, next would be getting rid of Romney. The GOP is pretty much dead anyways and those two are doing nothing more then sealing the coffin.
