Two in today's news:
and
I remember Tanya Roberts from her time on "Charlie's Angels." My friends and I eagerly watched, hoping she'd do what we called a "boobs on car" scene (jumping on the roof of the car of fleeing bad guys, clinging to the windshield trim with her fingers, bosoms threatening to block the driver's view of the road). Unfortunately, I couldn't find a photo, so there's this:She had the right look for the eighties. And 65 is starting to hit uncomfortably close to home.

LOS ANGELES - Marion Ramsey, known for acting in the "Police Academy" films and gracing the Broadway stage in 1978's "Eubie!," died Thursday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 73.
Roger Paul of Roger Paul Inc., the agency that managed Ramsey, confirmed the news to Variety. Ramsey had recently fallen ill, but her exact cause of death is currently undetermined.
Though many may know Ramsey for her role as Officer Laverne Hooks in the "Police Academy" films, her career began much earlier. In 1964, she appeared in "Hello, Dolly!," and in the 1970s she established herself as a theater, film and television talent. On stage, she acted in "Miss Moffat," and on screen she took part in the variety show "Keep On Truckin'" on ABC and held a regular role on "Cos."
But 1984 brought about the role that would mark Ramsey's career success. With the first "Police Academy," Ramsey found a film franchise that would see her through the 1980s. She continued to act in the movies through the sixth installment in 1989, "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege."

That was the Geezinslaw bus! Sammy Allred, co-founder of country comedy act The Geezinslaw Brothers, had to explain that one on the morning radio show he co-hosted with Bob Cole on KVET-FM at the time. Apparently the driver (who may have been Sammy himself...) had the bus in reverse when he thought it was in drive (or vice-versa, it happened in 2005 and I'm relying on my imperfect memory), and when he hit the gas pedal the bus went through the wall before he could stop it. Part of the lore of "old Austin" that is fading away more every year.

Leon Spinks, who surprised the boxing world by beating Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight title in 1978, died Friday night at age 67, according to the Firm PR, a public relations firm that represents him.
Spinks, who had been suffering from prostate and other cancers for five years, died with his wife, Brenda Glur Spinks, by his side, the firm said.
The St. Louis native, a former Marine who won a gold medal as a light heavyweight at the 1976 Olympics, was just 13 months and eight fights into his pro boxing career when he stepped into a ring against Ali on Feb. 15, 1978, in Las Vegas.
George P. Shultz, one of only two people to serve the United States in four Cabinet-level posts and a major force in economic and foreign policy in two Republican administrations, died Feb. 6 at his home in Stanford, Calif. He was 100.
The Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where Dr. Shultz was long affiliated after stepping down as secretary of state in 1989, announced the death but did not give a cause.
Dr. Shultz’s prodigious inside knowledge of the U.S. government was rivaled by few figures in recent memory, and his soft-spoken, cerebral manner obscured his strong conservative views about the wisdom of keeping spending under control, limiting government regulation and vigorously confronting terrorists.
He was famously a pragmatist on some of the consequential issues he faced while in power. As President Ronald Reagan’s secretary of state, Dr. Shultz played a critical role in the dramatic easing of tensions between the United States and Soviet Union that took place during the late 1980s.

I am so tired of seeing folks die of cancer, at the hands of American doctors. The recognized therapies of the AMA is downright criminal. Germany has almost double the success Americans doctors have regarding cancer. Just no excuse for their pathetic performance and mindset.
A dear friend of mine had two forms of terminal cancer, given 2-3 months to live. He ended up taking mega doses of shark cartilage, and his prostate cancer went completely away, and his multiple myeloma went into full remission. He lived 5.5 ye and died of something other than the cancer.
I saw this repeated many times, folks who had months to live, American doctors offering nothing from a therapeutic perspective, and they took alternative approaches and lived, and many returned to health.

George Shultz, who served as Secretary of State for Ronald Reagan for six years, died yesterday at age 100 (https://www.nationalreview.com/news/george-shultz-secretary-of-state-under-reagan-dead-at-100/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=breaking&utm_campaign=newstrack&utm_term=22877479).
Reagan assumed the presidency at a time when the existence of the Soviet Union and its domination of eastern Europe was regarded as an immutable fact of world politics. Taking office after Alexander Haig, Shultz helped implement Reagan’s vision of containing and rolling back communism across the globe. From supporting Solidarity in Poland, to backing anticommunist rebels in Reagan Doctrine countries like Afghanistan and Nicaragua, to the liberation of Grenada, to deploying intermediate nuclear missiles in Europe, to a hundred other policies, the Reagan Administration pressed Soviet communism in ways that would eventually force not only the liberation of Eastern Europe, but the demise of the Soviet Union itself. Shultz would play a key role in keeping American allies onboard with the program, and eventually in negotiations with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that would lead to the end of the Cold War.
Compared to Haig, Shultz was a low-key, drama-free professional who skillfully kept a wide variety of western governments broadly aligned with American goals, and for that he deserves credit. That he was wrong about much outside the Cold War (the gold standard, carbon taxes, and Brexit, to name but three) should not take away from his central achievement. With James A. Baker III, Secretary of State under Bush 41 (who largely followed the policies laid down under Reagan), Shultz presided over the most successful period of post-World War II diplomacy in American history, and his achievements were far more lasting than those under flashier Secretaries of State like Henry Kissinger or Colin Powell.
It's all part of "managing" disease, instead of curing it.
@jafo2010
It's only going to get worse with the globalist bankers buying up all the local hospitals, which means buying out all the local doctors, and establishing "corporate rule" over doctors decisions when it comes to treatment approaches.
I have seen my local hospital take this route, and it is now impossible for me to even get an appointment with the vascular surgeon that saved my leg in 1982 because he was bought out too,and is now a member of the Medical Borg. If I call him I end up getting an appointment at a "wound clinic" owned by the hospital, and some minimum wage employee just changes my bandage and sends me home, billing me more than the vascular surgeon used to bill me. When I went back the second time,it was the same thing. They made me another appointement and I told them when they did I would see an actual doctor or I would never return,I did get to see a doctor. She was smug and arrogant, and didn't listen to a single word I had to say. I got the same result,a new bandage and sent home with an appoitment to come back in a week and have it changed.
What they were doing was using the least amount of effort to drain my bank account in slow motion without ever actually having to do anything for me. After all,it ain't like I can't change a bandage at home myself.

‘She lifted people up.’ Barrier-breaking female astronaut dies at 75, daughter says
Millie Hughes-Fulford (NASA/Released)
February 09, 2021 Jack Howland - Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Millie Hughes-Fulford, a barrier-breaking astronaut and scientific researcher whose passion for space was formed as a child in Mineral Wells looking up at the stars, died Thursday following a seven-year battle with cancer, her daughter told the Star-Telegram. She was 75.
Hughes-Fulford shattered a glass ceiling in 1991 when she became the first female payload specialist to fly in space for NASA, launching into orbit on the shuttle Columbia as part of the first-ever mission dedicated to biomedical studies, STS-40. In the specialized role, dedicated to conducting on-board research, the trained chemist helped complete more than 18 experiments over a nine-day period, gathering more medical data than any mission up to that point. She circled the earth 146 times.

Good riddance.:amen:
@verga @GtHawk @PeteS in CABecause he was a vile and hateful man, and has nothing to do with his magazine, then again it was a reflection of the man.
Why the hostility? Flint was a butthole, but he never forced anyone to buy his magazine or anything else he sold.
.
I did pick up one of his mags that was laying around in the 70's,and was so grossed out I have never been temped to even glance at one again. IIRC,it was a cartoon titled "Chester, the Molester" that did it for me.
Seeing that one magazine issue had a positive effect on me,though. I knew from that day forward that anyone who subscribed or liked to read that magazine was never going to be a friend of mine.
In other words,it served a useful purpose as a filter. Knowing someone like the mag was all the information I needed to know about that person.
@verga @GtHawk @PeteS in CAI agree with you about the mag, but I saw it for what it was, as much of the media of the day that proclaimed itself "edgy". It was the beginning of desensitizing Americans toward what was commonly referred to as "sick" (nothing good about it). People who liked it were not the sort I ran with either.

QuoteThe unfortunate effect Flint had of taking obscenity laws out of play was that the ordinary borders of decency and acceptability were trashed by making the line harder to define than ever in a legal sense, and morally, society suffers still.
Frankly,I don't give a damn about any lines someone else draws. I draw my own line, and do my best to stay on the "right" side of it. Everyone else can do whatever they want,as long as you don't physically attack me or mine, but rest assured that if you step over MY line in my presence,I will make you aware of it.QuoteI'm no prude, by any stretch, but even in my bad old days, there were things that just were not done.
Even in the "bad new days of today, there are things that are just not done in my presence without me speaking out,and taking action to stop it,if that becomes necessary. I am talking about the basic things any civilized society REQUIRES for us all to live together as civilized human beings, and not barbarians. Things like people being able to walk the streets and live their normal lives without being in fear of being attacked, threatened,or abused in any other way. Especially women and children, and the elderly.
This may not be PC in today's modern world, but I don't really give a rabid rats ass. I live in MY world.

...
@verga @GtHawk @PeteS in CA@sneakypete To me he was the rock bottom of an industry that was already at a low point. He used and hid behind the 1st amendment not for a social or philosophical good but purely to make a profit. He went beyond objectifying to exploiting. This is strictly my opinion and I don't demand or expect that others will either share it or agree with it.

Just a reminder: This is the Obituaries thread. It would be fine to create a new thread where y'all can discuss how Larry Flynt damaged the country, or not.Sorry I did nto se this until after my replies. You may delete mine if desired, or switch to a different thread.

Chick Corea, the virtuosic keyboardist who broadened the scope of jazz during a career spanning more than five decades, died on Tuesday from a rare form of cancer. A post on his Facebook page confirmed the news. Corea was 79.
In the early Sixties, Corea established himself as an A-list pianist, working with Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, and others. Later in the decade, he joined Miles Davis’ band and played a key role in helping the trumpeter make the transition to a more contemporary, plugged-in sound on albums like Bitches Brew. Following his work with Davis, he formed his own groundbreaking electric band, Return to Forever, which played some of the most vibrant and dynamic music of the fusion era. In the ensuing decades, Corea threw himself into countless projects, showing off his limitless range — from a duo with vibraphonist Gary Burton to his trendsetting Elektric Band. His most recent album, the 2020 live solo disc Plays, showed off his wildly diverse skill set and body of influences, touching on classical pieces, bebop, and more.

It occurred to me yesterday while posting the above that the musicians I enjoyed in the 70s - whether early CCMers like Barry McGuire, Annie Herring, Nancy Henigbaum, and more or jazz fusion musicians like George Benson, Jean Luc Ponty, Earl Klugh, and Bob James - are all getting up there in years. McGuire is, IIRC, semi-retired and may soon be receiving the ultimate "higher".

We are very sad to report the death of Rupert Neve, perhaps the most important and influential designer in recording-studio history. Mr. Neve passed away at the age of 94 in his adoptive home of Wimberley, Texas, but his name will be forever associated with the British company he founded in 1961. He was quick to see the potential of solid-state electronics, designing his first all-transistor console in the mid-’60s, and would go on to create seminal designs such as the 1073 and 1084 preamp/EQ modules. Neve consoles became first choice for recording studios and broadcasters all around the world, and by the time he and wife Evelyn sold Neve Electronics in 1975, the company employed over 500 people.

I remember first hearing Rush in 1987 (guest host on KGO, recommended by Bernie Ward of all people). My first thought was, "Is this a parody?" My second thought was, "I wish I could get away with saying that so bluntly!"
Rush Limbaugh, conservative talk radio pioneer, dead at 70 ...Started listening to him in 91 or 92. He said what I was thinking. RIP
https://www.foxnews.com/media/rush-limbaugh-dead-talk-radio-conservative-icon (https://www.foxnews.com/media/rush-limbaugh-dead-talk-radio-conservative-icon)
Dead at 70, lung cancer. This will hit my mother hard, Rush was part of her morning for as long as I can remember.
RIP Rush.
I was a latecomer as a listener to Rush (1991). My first impression was ... Wow, we have a new Bill Buckley, without having to have to keep dictionary near by.
I took my kids by WABC in Manhattan in about '97 to see if we could at least watch Rush do his show. That was when he was splitting his time between NY and FLA and unfortunately he was in FLA that day.
Ah, 97 was good listening. You had Bob Grant in the afternoon, after Rush, Curtis in the am, and Lynn Samuels and Drudge on weekends. Lynn was hid producer. Steve Maltzberg was also on.Lol Bob Grant kept getting fired, if I recall. Bouncing him between WOR and WABC.
I grew up listening to Bob Grant on WABC, WOR, and WMCA. I do miss him, and Jean Shepherd. They were the ones that made me like talk radio. Shepherd was on WOR.
@skeeter
I vaguely remember Shane Brother Shane on WGR (?) back in the early 1990s. I think he may have done weekends at KB in the mid-2000s, maybe?888high58888
I suspect something about him may have rubbed off on me because I have a pretty wild stage persona myself.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti has died in San Francisco. He was 101. Ferlinghetti is probably best known for three things: his Beat poetry, his San Francisco bookstore and small press, and his defense of the First Amendment in a famous court case.
His most famous work is a 1958 collection of poetry called A Coney Island of the Mind. In it, he compares the horrors depicted in Francisco Goya's paintings of the Napoleonic Wars to scenes of post-World War II America.
(Snip)
A Coney Island of the Mind was translated into nine languages and sold more than a million copies. Despite his popularity, Ferlinghetti was never considered on par with some of the other Beat writers he called his friends — Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg.

Coyote. Lab/Husky cross, 12 years old. Great pal, very vocal, never failed to greet me when I came home, a friend and companion. Loved pizza and other people food. Lost his head over a female in heat and bit a family member. Passed by lethal injection about 4:30 CST, and left a gaping hole in our family and my heart.

I am right there with ya, Joe. Lost my friend over a year ago, don't think I'll ever completely get over it.
I lost my dobie in 1982 because I was at work and my buttcrack father let her suffer all day while trying to give birth to puppies that were trying to come out backwards. She spend hours in agony while I was at work not knowing anything about it,and that dipshit didn't bother to call me. If he had,I would have left work and took her to the vet immediately.
He died a couple of years later, and I still miss the dog,and don't miss him at all. I only came home to take care of him after my mother died out of a sense of duty. He never liked me to start with, and in my entire life never once called me anything but "boy". Never once did a single damn thing for me he didn't have to do,and bitched about that.
All in all,the dobie was the bigger loss.
@Smokin JoeHe is my grandson, just turned 18 and has lived with us since a toddler (we're his guardians). He and the dog got along well for the entire life of the dog. The dog had a snootful of female in heat and turned on him when he stopped him from bolting out the door. The dog should have obeyed, not bitten (literally) a hand that fed him. We have a rule in our house that no dog bites a family member, and the dog, at 12 knew that. It wasn't what I wanted, just had to be done.
Should have told that family member to just STFA from the pooch. Chances are they were at as much fault for this happening as the dog was,so why kill the dog?
I grieved for my dog like I haven't for anyone. Doesn't mean I don't love and miss family who are gone; there's just something about a dog.True, that.

@Smokin JoeYeah, but that only makes it harder to deal with.
Ok,the dog knowing the grandson for his entire life and living in the same house does make a difference.
Chances are the pooch was going senile, and would have only gotten worse.
Yeah, but that only makes it harder to deal with.
He was very vocal, being part husky, and made whistles and other noises to communicate, which he did often. After all those years, I could tell who was coming to the door by the sounds he made and his reaction. He announced the mailman's arrival with the same unique set of growls every day (not so much vicious as just guttural tones). He knew everything going on for a hundred or more yards in any direction, the sound of our vehicles from a couple blocks away, and was always happy to see me. He didn't like the last room he was in, he wanted me to take him outside...

12 years is about all we have a right to expect from any dog. Thats a full life.Yes, but he was healthy, fit, and just once I'd like one to die of old age. I was hoping we'd have many more years yet. I guess I should just be grateful for what we had.
This breaks my heart @Smokin Joe . I'm so very sorry.Mine, too, @berdie.

Difficult as that was, I’m sure you know you did the right thing.I know, I had no choice, really. That does not make it any less painful. Events beyond my control.

Sorry for your loss @Smokin JoeThanks, @GtHawk. I'm a tough old buzzard, former fireman, oilfield hand for decades, spent some time as a 'scooter tramp', but this hurts enough that only now over 24 hours later can I talk about him and stay dry eyed (well, mostly). The first 24 hours are the toughest.

And I still tear up thinking about him at times, it hurts so much because they are family.

Reggae legend Bunny Wailer — a founding member of the Wailers with Bob Marley — passed away early on Tuesday. He was 73.
Wailer died at the Medical Associates Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. No cause of death was reported, although he had been in and out of the hospital since suffering a second stroke in July 2020.
It is indeed a major loss to lose one's best friend. My wife calls our dog her best friend. She makes us laugh all day long. She literally runs our whole house. She is smarter than all the dogs combined that I had, and she senses everything. If one of us is down, she knows and does things to support us. Is it so endearing.
My wife was on the verge of crying one day in the kitchen, over work related crap, and the dog sat next to her looking up and she started to cry in a tone that was very unique. My wife was so upset she did not notice until I pointed it out to her. It made my wife go from tears welling up in her eyes to joy at seeing the dog sense how she felt. She bent down and picked her up, hugging her with great joy.
I cannot imagine being here without her. She has become such a prominent force in our lives. Yesterday, she jumped on the bed and woke me up, telling me it was time to get up. She often does this. She is so funny. I think I mentioned this before, but she will give a little hmmmf, and does it 3-4 more times a little louder each time. She woke me up with the first one, but I pretend to sleep, so she nudges me with her paw, and I stay still, and she nudges me 3-4 more times, a little harder each time. I still lay there pretending to sleep. Then she pulls the bedspread, blanket and sheet down to the foot of the bed, and by then I just can't keep a straight face. She is a real hoot. And she is always very serious with her looks when she is doing this.
So, my sincerest sympathy for the loss of your good friend.

Blind, Epileptic, Heart Murmur, Kidney disease, and he is developing Arthritis, but he is the happiest dog you want to meet. This morning I had to stop back at the house to grab a different shirt. Vergette was walking him. As soon as he smelled my car, he ran up the drive to greet me. He has been very needy since our other dog Cassie passed. He will go up to Vergette when she is sitting on the couch and bump her with his nose until she picks him up. When my back is hurting and I am sleeping on the recliner, he comes up and humps me until I pick him him up.

Roger Mudd, the longtime political correspondent and anchor for NBC and CBS who once stumped Sen. Edward Kennedy by simply asking why he wanted to be president, has died. He was 93.
CBS News says Mudd died Tuesday of complications of kidney failure at his home in McLean, Virginia.
During more than 30 years on network television, starting with CBS in 1961, Mudd covered Congress, elections and political conventions and was a frequent anchor and contributor to various specials. His career coincided with the flowering of television news, the pre-cable, pre-Internet days when the big three networks and their powerhouse ranks of reporters were the main source of news for millions of Americans.
Besides work at CBS and NBC, he did stints on PBS’s “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour†and the History Channel.
Great question with which to stump a candidate.

And yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Walter Cronkite signing off. I feel so old...
And that question was a softball question. Everyone should be able without thinking to answer that question. Donald Trump would be quick to answer that very same question.Any candidate who hasn't prepared for that question is an idiot. Of course, we are talking about Teddy Kennedy.
Roger Harrison Mudd was born on Feb. 9, 1928, in Washington, the Post reported. The family was distantly related to Samuel A. Mudd, a Maryland doctor who treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg after Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln in 1865.Yep, I knew a couple when I lived back East, and they were working on that still.
I remember Roger talking about this..he and his other descendants have spent years trying to clear Dr. Samuel Mudd.
Mudd, who was born in Washington, was a distant relative of Dr. Samuel Mudd, the doctor who was arrested for treating an injured John Wilkes Booth shortly after Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The doctor, who was eventually pardoned, said he hadn’t been aware of the killing when he aided Booth.
Any candidate who hasn't prepared for that question is an idiot. Of course, we are talking about Teddy Kennedy. And Teddy wasn't just any old idiot, I would have said he was the reigning idiot...............but then Joe Biden said 'hold my beer'.
“He’s in ICU fighting the after effects of the vaccine!†Hearns claimed in the post without offering any proof or specifying which vaccine.
Any idea where Hearns got his MD from, or coroner training?

James Levine, one of the most renowned conductors of the modern era, whose career at the helm of the Metropolitan Opera crashed amid sexual abuse allegations in 2018, has died at age 77.Variety (https://variety.com/2021/music/news/james-levine-dead-conductor-met-opera-scandal-1234932701/)
He was reported Wednesday to have died at home in Palm Springs on March 9. No cause of death was given, nor was there any explanation for why the passing of such a world-renowned figure was not revealed for eight days.
Levine was one of the few conductors since Leonard Bernstein and Leopold Stokowski to become a household name — borne out when Disney updated its classic “Fantasia†film as “Fantasia 2000†and it was Levine brought in to fill the on-and off-screen conducting role occupied by Stokowski in the original movie. ...
Although his 21st century career included leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well, Levine had his greatest renown conducting the Metropolitan Opera from 1971 through 2017. That’s where his career ended when scandal erupted in 2017.; the Met fired him in 2018, following an internal investigation that “uncovered credible evidence that Mr. Levine engaged in sexually abusive and harassing conduct toward vulnerable artists in the early stages of their careers.â€
The New York Times reported last year that Levine had received $3.5 million to leave in a confidential settlement following a lawsuit and countersuit. Levine had sued the Met for breach of contract and defamation for $5.8 million after he was fired in March 2018, and the opera company countersued. ...

Apollo 13 mission in April 1970. Lunney called
Apollo 13 the best of his career. (NASA)
— An engineer who was involved from the start in NASA's efforts to launch the first astronauts into space and who later led Mission Control through some of its most challenging and triumphant hours, flight director Glynn S. Lunney has died at the age of 84.
Lunney's death on Friday (March 19) was confirmed by NASA. A family friend said that Lunney died after a long illness.
"Glynn was the right person for the right time in history," Mark Geyer, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, said in a statement. "His unique leadership and remarkably quick intellect were critical to the success of some of the most iconic accomplishments in human spaceflight."
"While he was one of the most famous NASA alumni, he was also one of the most humble people I have ever worked with. He was very supportive of the NASA team and was so gracious in the way he shared his wisdom with us," said Geyer.
Lunney was working for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) as a co-op student in 1958, when he was recruited by the newly-formed NASA at the age of 22. The youngest member of the Space Task Group, he and his colleagues at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, were charged with figuring out how to send the first astronauts into space.
Initially, Lunney was assigned to develop the simulated missions that were used to train other flight controllers. His position for the early Project Mercury flights was at a remote tracking station.
"I was at the Bermuda station," he said in a 1999 NASA oral history interview. "Bermuda is 800 miles [1,300 km] or so out in the ocean away from Florida, where we launched [the missions], and the place where the vehicle went into orbit was about halfway in between."
"Since this was at the very horizon from the Cape [Canaveral, Florida] and going out of sight, there was some question about how well we could know whether the vehicle was in orbit or not. So I started off as a flight dynamics officer at the control center in Bermuda, and I was there for a number of the flights — both unmanned and manned."
After the 1962 launch of John Glenn on the first U.S. crewed mission to orbit Earth, Lunney worked the final three original astronaut missions from the Mercury Control Center in Florida, before becoming chief of the flight dynamics branch.

I especially liked the scene in that show where you showed up as Santa Claus for your grandchildren but your entire outfit was blue and white, and you had a Star of David on a chain that would put Flavor Flax’s clocks to shame.I never saw "Goldbergs," but that sounds hilarious!
I remember Segal from the sitcom Just Shoot Me. He was the highlight of that show.I completely forgot about that. Great show. He knew how to bring out the best in that cast.

G. Gordon Liddy, Watergate mastermind and Nixon operative, dead at 90FOX News (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/g-gordon-liddy-watergate-mastermind-and-nixon-operative-dead-at-90)
Liddy was behind the Watergate break-in that led to Richard Nixon's downfall
By Thomas Barrabi | Fox News
G. Gordon Liddy, the Richard Nixon 1972 reelection campaign operative who played a central role in the Watergate scandal that led to the former president’s resignation, died Tuesday at the age of 90.
Liddy’s son, Thomas, confirmed his death. He did not provide a cause of death but noted that COVID-19 was not a factor.
A former FBI agent, Liddy ran an unsuccessful congressional bid in New York in 1968. He served as an aide in the Treasury Department during Nixon’s first term in office. After a stint in that role, he headed up a team of operatives known as "The Plumbers," who were tasked with gathering information on Nixon’s political rivals and combating leaks following the release of the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Later, Liddy served on Nixon’s Committee to Reelect the President. He was known as the mastermind of a plot to place wiretaps inside Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate building in Washington in 1972. The plot was discovered and Liddy was arrested, alongside fellow Nixon operative Howard Hunt and five others. ...
Following his release from prison, Liddy became a radio show talk host, where he became known for his provocative on-air remarks. In one controversial episode during the 1990s, Liddy told listeners to target federal agents with "head shots." Later, Liddy defended his remarks, saying he wasn't advocating violence against federal agents, but rather encouraging the members of the public to defend themselves and their rights if confronted with deadly force. ...

During someime in the late '70's, maybe as late as 1980, I remember Liddy giving a talk at my college. He was a firebrand fire and brimstone non-apologetic conservative, when almost the rest of the GOP was in a post Watergate whimpering stuper. To this day, I can remeber the biggest cheer, when he stood up and almost yelled.... "If this country had any balls, they'd put Jimmy Carter in Jail for treason". Thought brought on a Standing "O".:amen:
Either my memory is getting worse the older I get, or the Mandela Effect is real. I thought he had died years ago. :shrug:You may be remembering his retirement, which was back in 2012.

Rappers and grunge singers have a notorious habit of expiring before their time.
The lesson? Don't be an insufferable victim and you'll have a much better chance of living a long and happy life.
@jmyrlefullerGrunge: it was a style of "music" (I use the term loosely) that was popular in the early 90s. Starting with Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), a lot of the lead singers of these grunge bands ended up dead of drug overdoses: Paul Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Chester Bennington (Linkin Park).
What are "Grunge Singers"? Seems like I vaguely remember hearing the term, but can't think of what it means for the life of me.

Hello,
Steve had a condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus where the cerebral spinal fluid doesn’t drain properly from the brain. He had a shunt inserted in his brain 3 years ago to drain the fluid and when this was done he experienced a brain bleed. Apparently the brain bleed turned into scar tissue. He began recently to have small seizures at first and then larger seizures. They were nonstop and the doctors could not control them with medication. They put him in a medically induced coma in an effort to reboot his brain but it did not work and he never came out of the coma. He passed away last evening.

He began recently to have small seizures at first and then larger seizures. They were nonstop and the doctors could not control them with medication. They put him in a medically induced coma in an effort to reboot his brain but it did not work and he never came out of the coma. He passed away last evening.

Still numb and stunned about Steve's passing.
Seemed like only a couple of years ago, he doing well listing and selling Huntington Beach, CA..
Trying to remember if he ever told us about his getting a shunt 3 years ago. Vaguely recall it.
Honored to have called him my friend for almost twenty years on the forums.

Sadly, there are enough angry cruel Progs "out there" who would enjoy adding to family members' grief by doxxing them and siccing similarly cruel people on family members. So, IMO, posting IRL names, cities, pix, and similar info that could be used to dox the deceased is not a good idea presently.

The simple solution to that problem is to state in public in the thread header that it is a thread to honor those no longer here, and any negative posts will be immediately deleted, and depending on how serious the offense,so will the poster.
Anybody so stupid they can't understand the reasoning behind that is too stupid to be allowed to post here, anyhow.
Just a simple "Blip!",and your post is gone with no explanation given,no debate, and no excuses accepted.
Gone.
Infamous fraudster Bernie Madoff has died at age 82, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Madoff masterminded the biggest investment fraud in U.S. history, a Ponzi scheme that ripped off tens of thousands of people of as much as $65 billion.
Madoff was serving a 150-year sentence at the federal prison care center in Butner, North Carolina, where he was being treated for what his attorney called terminal kidney disease.

If Bernie Madoff had been put in charge of the Social Security Administration, he would have died a free man.

Sentenced to 150 years in prison for doing what the fedgov does to millions every day!
It's his investors that I have an issue with. They handed their money over to him with the full expectation that he had insider information which would cause their investments to grow faster than us regular folks. But when the ponzi scheme was exposed, they demanded a bailout from us taxpayers.

@jmyrlefullerIt's rare, but not totally unheard of. There are a lot of dwarfs who die young due to a lot of health issues that come with being that short, but there have been a few that went on to live healthy lives into old age.

YIKES! Isn't it practically unheard of for dwarfs to live that long?

Walter Mondale, who transformed the role of U.S. vice president while serving under Jimmy Carter and was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984, died Monday at 93, according to a family spokesperson.
The big picture: President Biden, who was mentored by Mondale through the years, said in 2015 that the former vice president gave him a "roadmap" to successfully take on the job.
He was the first vice president to have an office in the White House and was deeply engaged in both U.S. and foreign policy, working closely with the president.
"I took Fritz's roadmap. He actually gave me a memo, classic Fritz, gave me a memo, as to what I should be looking for and what kind of commitments I should get to be able to do the job the way Fritz thought it should be done," Biden said at an event honoring Mondale in 2015.

I think I told this story before, that I had a chance meeting of Meat Loaf back in 1978 in the hallway at WLS in Chicago. Bat was just hitting it big and he was in the studio with his entourage promoting the album with one of the DJ's. Maybe Larry Lujack or Dick Biondi  Anyway Meat was coming down the hall a dripping with sweat and wearing his red satin jacket. Big guy the Meat...must have been 350 then. Anyway I had to turn sideways to let him pass And as he went by I said "Hey Meat". He never looked at me but I distinctively heard him grunt back at me in response!. The members of his entourage bringing up the read just gave me the stink eye. And me being the smartass that I was gave them the "tip of the Hat" sign and moved on down to studio's glass cage to watch the DJ do his job!.
Pacifica Radio is like a miniature Stalinist Russia without a Cheka or Gulag system to remove squabbling rivals. Its operations are micro-Stalin vs. micro-Trotsky vs. micro-Bukharin vs. micro-...... . Sounds like Fass was not very well suited to that kind of environment. The odd thing is, like a battered wife, Fass stayed loyal to WBAI right to the bitter end.
Lol. Even a grunt from Mr Loaf when he was in his prime must been pretty awesome.
R.I.P Apollo 11 Astronaut Major General (retired) Michael Collins. He was 90.Wow. Rest in peace, indeed. When Mr. M lived in DC, he used to jog at the American Univ. track. One time he met a fit-looking older guy who introduced himself only as "Mike," and the two of them ran together a number of times. Mr. M didn't recognize him, and didn't know he was the astronaut Michael Collins until someone else told him, "Hey, did you know who you've been running with?" As far as Mr. M knew, he was just a nice guy.

Jimmie F. Rodgers, acoustic pop singer of the 1950s and 1960s, dies at 87
Rodgers (not to be confused with the 1930s country singer Jimmie C. Rodgers) is probably best known for the song "Honeycomb," the first of a string of pop/country crossover hits he had in 1957 and 1958. He eventually had a minor comeback in 1966 with two more top-40 hits, "It's Over" (famously covered by Elvis) and "Child of Clay," before a 1967 dispute with mob-tied Roulette Records was followed shortly thereafter by an attack that left Rodgers with numerous long-term injuries and amnesia about the event.
These injuries, along with a recurring bout with spasmodic dysphonia affecting his voice throughout the rest of his lifetime, curtailed Rodgers's career in the 1970s, with his records only reaching the lower ends of the country charts.
Rodgers died January 18 from coronavirus, complicated by his long-term health issues.

I didn't realize Angley was still alive. He was a character, to say the least.
Had to look him up in W'pedia. Sounds like he had a sketchy side.Yeah, I decided to leave the summary off his, because 1) I wasn't sure if WP's write-up (disclaimer: I contribute to WP but seldom on anything controversial) had given proper weight to his life as a whole, since the editors over there can and frequently do give undue weight to make people and things they don't like look bad, but 2) there was a distinct possibility that he was as bad as the WP authors claimed. Televangelism isn't the most squeaky clean industry out there (ironically).

He used to have shills that would use a specific type of wheelchair and he would "miraculously" have them "Rise and Walk". A paraplegic came up to him with that type of chair. Earnest did his mumbo jumbo, the man stood took about a half a step and dropped like a sack of potatoes, on live television. After that all of his shows were "prerecorded for later broadcast".

I never got into the televangelism or Christian TV network scene. I listened to a few radio shows in the early (mumble)s but got turned off by Swaggart's continual beg-a-thon and the Two Kenneths God-in-a-Box theology.Back when my children were babies and I would stay up at night to spell my wife I would tune into Dr. Gene Scott but not for religion, for entertainment, he was a hell of a character! Otherwise I have no use for the charlatans.
He was quite good on St. Elsewhere.

Grammy-winning pop, country and gospel singer B.J. Thomas has died at age 78 following a bout with lung cancer. He died earlier today at his home in Arlington, Texas.more (https://ultimateclassicrock.com/bj-thomas-dead/?utm_source=tsmclip&utm_medium=referral)
Thomas, best known for hits like “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” announced in March that he had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. “I just wanted to take this unique opportunity to share my gratitude to Gloria, my wonderful wife and my rock for over 53 years, my family, friends and fans,” he said in a statement at the time.
Born on Aug. 7, 1942, in Hugo, Okla., and raised outside Houston, Thomas sang in his church choir as a teenager and fronted the Triumphs before embarking on a solo career. In 1966, he earned his first gold record with a cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," which sold over 1 million copies and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Thomas' star continued to rise with his 1968 album, On My Way, which featured the hit single "Hooked on a Feeling." The song, distinguished by Reggie Young's electric sitar intro, peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and became Thomas' second gold record, selling over a million copies. In December 1968, Thomas also married singer-songwriter Gloria Richardson, to whom he remained married his whole life. ...
Yet as Thomas' career flourished, his increasing drug and alcohol use threatened to splinter his marriage. Salvation came in 1975, when Thomas and Gloria both converted to Christianity and began to mend their relationship.
The following year, Thomas released his first gospel album, Home Where I Belong, establishing him as one of the era's biggest contemporary Christian artists. He went on to earn Grammy nods for Best Inspirational Performance seven consecutive years (1978-1984), including four wins in that category. (He also took home Best Gospel Performance in 1981.)

Ned Beatty, titanic character actor of ‘Network,’ dies at 83RIP Mr. Beatty. I thin I liked every part he played. He had tremendous range as an actor from hero to nasty villain, from comedy to Drama. He will be missed.
By JAKE COYLE
NEW YORK (AP) — Ned Beatty, the Oscar-nominated character actor who in half a century of American movies, including “Deliverance,” “Network” and “Superman,” was a booming, indelible presence in even the smallest parts, has died. He was 83.
Beatty’s manager, Deborah Miller, said Beatty died Sunday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by friends and loved ones.
After years in regional theater, Beatty was cast in 1972′s “Deliverance” as Bobby Trippe, the happy-go-lucky member of a male river-boating party terrorized by backwoods thugs in “Deliverance.” The scene in which Trippe is brutalized and forced to “squeal like a pig” became the most memorable in the movie and established Beatty as an actor whose name moviegoers may not have known but whose face they always recognized. ... 'Cops' creator John Langley dies at 78More (https://www.wtae.com/article/cops-creator-john-langley-dies/36863475?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot#)

By ANDREW DALTON, AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES — John Langley, who was the creator of the long-running TV series "Cops," has died during a road race in Mexico, a family spokeswoman said.
Langley died in Baja, Mexico, of an apparent heart attack Saturday during the Coast to Coast Ensenada-San Felipe 250 off-road race, family spokeswoman Pam Golum said. He was 78.
"Cops" was among the first reality series on the air when it debuted in 1989, and it would become an institution through 32 seasons. ...
It came under criticism for what was considered a slanted, pro-police perspective, and was permanently pulled from the air by Paramount last year during worldwide protests over the killing of George Floyd. ...
More (https://www.wtae.com/article/cops-creator-john-langley-dies/36863475?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot#)RIP, Mr. Langley. Thanks for showing people what it is like on the other side of the badge. I did not always agree with some of the methods used, but then, I'm neither a crook nor a cop. (Pity the show was pulled on the false pretense that police killed George Floyd and not the fentanyl he had on board.)

Former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who served during the Iraq War under George W Bush, has died aged 88.
His family said: "History may remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments over six decades of public service, but for those who knew him best and whose lives were forever changed as a result, we will remember his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, his family and friends, and the integrity he brought to a life dedicated to country."
Mr Rumsfeld was Mr Bush's defence secretary from 2001 until 2006. He also served in the same role under former president Gerald Ford between 1975 and 1977.

World Athletics is deeply saddened to hear that Vera Nikolic, Serbia’s former world 800m record-holder, died on Monday (28) at the age of 72.(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/35/Vera_Nikoli%C4%87_1972.jpg/240px-Vera_Nikoli%C4%87_1972.jpg)
A two-time European champion having claimed 800m gold for Yugoslavia in Budapest in 1966 and Helsinki in 1971, Nikolic achieved her world record-breaking run of 2:00.5 in London on 20 July 1968. That mark would not be beaten for almost three years.
She raced at two Olympic Games, in 1968 and 1972, and went on to become a highly successful coach. ...
... How are you feeling? I asked, she didn't speak much English but she shrugged and nodded, trying hard to hold back her tears. I took her hands in mine, and thought I knew she wouldn't understand every word, I'd hope she'd understand where i was coming from. She looked amazed that I would break my concentration on the finals just to talk to her. I know that you are a great athlete, I said. I want to see you go back and get yourself together and get your mind together. Pray to God for strength, and when you come back, you'll come out fighting and be the runnerI know you are. She cried openly and then nodded as we hugged each other. From Madeline Manning Jackson's biography Running For Jesus
A year later at the Europe vs. Americas games in Germany I ran into Vera's coach. How is she? I asked. She's here, he told me. When you stopped to talk to her before your own finals, it brought tears to my eyes. If you hadn't done that, I'm sure she would have given up. It was the turning point in her life. She's back in training, and while she's not in top shape yet, she's coming back. By then she had seen me and ran up to hug me. 3 years later in Munich she was again among the top 5 800 meter women in the world ...
RIP, Mr. Rumsfeld.

Robert E. “Robby” Steinhardt, a violinist and vocalist with the progressive rock band Kansas, has died due to complications from pancreatitis. He was 71.
His wife, Cindy Steinhardt, said he died Saturday at a hospital in Tampa, Florida. She announced via Facebook on Monday (July 19) that he had just recorded his first solo album and had been looking forward to being back on stage and going on tour.
Steinhardt, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, was an original member of the band, teaming up with Topeka West High School graduates Kerry Livgren, Rich Williams, Phil Ehart and Dave Hope and with Steve Walsh, who grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri. Steinhardt performed with Kansas from 1973 to 1982 and 1997 to 2006, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
Jackie Mason, unabashedly Jewish comic, dies at 93.
"UNABASHEDLY Jewish"
@sneakypete
Only inasmuch as Mason made his Judaism a centerpiece of his comedy, with his frequent Yiddish and, well, kvetching act. It was an integral part of his shtick (good grief, I think *I* was Jewish in a past life with all the Yiddish I speak!).
Jackie Mason, unabashedly Jewish comic, dies at 93.
One of the last surviving comedians from the Borscht Belt north of New York City where many of the great Jewish comedians of the mid-20th century originated, Mason, a former rabbi with his thick Yiddish accent and observational comedy, became a star on the stand-up comedy circuit in the 1960s before Ed Sullivan, mistakenly believing that Mason had flipped him off during a routine Sullivan was trying to cut short, blacklisted him from the show. He continued to work in Broadway for a number of years afterward, then moved into a brief film career that included The Jerk, History of the World Part I (from fellow Borscht Belter Mel Brooks) and the infamous Caddyshack II, in which he played the villain.
Mason moved toward more politically conservative commentary near the end of his life, including a weekly talk show for Talk Radio Network. He died July 24.

Ron Popeil, gadget salesman who revolutionized the infomercial, dies at 86.
Popeil followed in the path of his father Samuel, an inventor and seller of various kitchen gadgets, and established Ronco. Ronco used television as a way to reach a wide audience and by the 1970s and early 1980s was being spoofed by Dan Aykroyd's Saturday Night Live sketch "Bass-O-Matic" and "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Mr. Popeil" (which included Ron's daughter Lisa on backing vocals and Ron would later use in his commercials). When full-length infomercials became legal in 1984, Popeil was there, using it to sell items such as the Pocket Fisherman, the Veg-O-Matic, the Showtime Rotisserie Grill, the Mr. Microphone low-power radio transmitter, the Bedazzler, the Food Dehydrator, and other gadgets. He sold the company in 2005 but remained active to a lesser extent until his death.
He had suffered a sudden medical emergency on July 28 after previously being in good health.

I was shocked when Jim Morrison and Jimmy Hendrix died. Two talented musicians dead from drugs at such a young age. After their deaths, nothing surprises me about musicians and their self destruction.
I also liked Rush. ZZ Top was a bit too heavy metal for me.
John Lennon. Just because of the way he died, being murdered and all,
I know there have been other musicians who were murdered, (Marvin Gaye comes to mind) but The Beatles were one of a handful of bands that got me through a miserable adolescence
It always seemed to me @jafo2010 that there is a little of that self-destructancy in all of us. Some have the Genetics/Environment to overcome it and some don't.
And some just don't have it and never really understood the tendency.

Don't sell Marvin Gaye short. He was putting out some serious messages,as well as some truly beautiful music at the same time. Who knows how far he could have advanced this if he hadn't died so young?

You can be in real bad physical or mental pain to consider shuffling off this mortal coil. Depression is a real bi**h. We’ve all had those 3am dark night of the soul where we’ve pondered our mortality.
sneakypete, I wish you would have listened to me about shark cartilage. It's not nonsense, it is real. I know many that it helped to eliminate cancer or halt the growth when American doctors gave up hope and told folks to get their affairs in order, they had a couple months left.
AND ANOTHER THING, TAKEN IN THE PROPER DOSE, SHARK CARTILAGE ALLEVIATES PAIN WITHOUT DEBILITATING YOUR MENTAL FACILITIES.
Best brand I know is Cartilade. Get the powder and use it to the ratio of one gram for every 2 pounds of body weight daily. Do not mix with warm or hot liquids, wash it down with room temp or cold liquids. Do that for one month and tell me what is going on.

I am going to say it. The man is dead, but I would tell him to his face the following:
Trumpka's death may be a good thing for the coal industry. Look what happened to coal with him in a key role. They had their heads handed to them, and yet, he continued to support the Obama/Biden nonsense.
No lawyer was born that I have a kind thought about. Like sneakypete, I think if this guy was investigated, really investigated and not a sham investigation, he would be sitting on millions with questionable origin.
I grew up in a union household. My father was a steelworker. My mother, she ate and breathed unions, although never a union member. I saw the leadership of unions as a total betrayal to the rank and file. I still see it. They were all self serving. It is the leaders of unions and their mindset that drove a great deal of industry out of the USA.
This guy was no friend to the rank and file. False praise from Biden, from my view.

I learn at a young age to hate unions. The good paying jobs in my town were union jobs but you couldn't get those job unless you had a union card. Every job interview ended with "Go down to the union hall and get your card, come back and we'll put you to work. Every trip down, the same thing happened. Some fat ass cigar smoking slob refused a card to me and many others. The two excuses were: You weren't connected, ie your family isn't in a union job or we can't give you a card because you would take a job away from one of our lazy members who could be fired from a job by an employer if you work to hard. What a racket. In my eyes unions discouraged hard work.
Guys, this is the obituary thread.I'll allow it—given that Trumka is the most powerful union official in America and most of the conversation here is related to the influence of unions, and by extension the deceased, have on American life.

Dadgum... Bobby Bowden dies.
Bobby Bowden, whose homespun charm and coaching savvy turned the Florida State Seminoles into a football superpower, died on Sunday morning. He was 91.
Terry Bowden, son of the legendary coach, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home surrounded by family. “It was truly peaceful,” Terry Bowden said in a text message to AP.
Bowden won more major-college games than anyone except Penn State’s Joe Paterno. He retired following the 2009 season with a record of 377-129-4, but the numbers don’t reflect the impact he had on college football in general and FSU in particular.
The school was ready to drop football when Bowden arrived in 1976. He quickly transformed it into a football brand name with appeal far beyond Tallahassee.
Bowden was a combination coach, preacher and public-relations guru. As college football exploded into a multibillion-dollar business, Bowden’s folksy demeanor put a spell on recruits, fans and even the dadgum media.

Tom T. Hall dies at 85
I woke up this morning listening to one of the local country stations playing a Tom T. Hall song and talking about the song a bit after it finished. "Oh, did he die?" I thought. Turns out that he did. **nononono*That's also how I found out this morning. I was listening to my usual silly-music show (Music to Go to the Dump By on WDEV out of Vermont) and heard "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine." I wondered, "Why are they playing a serious song? NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Don Everly, one-half of the pioneering Everly Brothers whose harmonizing country rock hits impacted a generation of rock ‘n’ roll music, has died. He was 84.
According to the Los Angeles Times, a family spokesperson said Everly died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday. His brother, Phil Everly, died in January 2014 at age 74.
In the late 1950s and 1960s, the duo of Don and Phil drew upon their rural roots with their strummed guitars and high, yearning harmonies, while their poignant songs — many by the team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant — embodied teenage restlessness and energy. Their 19 top 40 hits included “Bye Bye Love,” “Let It Be Me,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “Wake Up Little Susie,” and performers from the Beatles to Simon & Garfunkel cited them as key influences.

Three Comedians Including Fuquan Johnson Dead From Fentanyl As It Pours Over The Southern Border
September 6, 2021
By Haley Strack
A tainted batch of fentanyl-laced cocaine killed comedian Fuquan Johnson and two other victims and left comedian Kate Quigley hospitalized on Sunday night, amid a growing crisis of fentanyl surging across the southern border.
Johnson and fellow comedians Enrico Colangeli and Natalie Williamson died at a Venice home on Sunday as the result of an apparent overdose, TMZ reported. In a screenshot shared to Twitter, Quigley, former girlfriend of singer-songwriter Darius Rucker, told a friend she was “not great” but was “Ok.” ... People who had sent their kids to college on 5-10 acre tobacco farms' yields now were all signed up to NOT produce the cash crop grown there since colonial days. (Tobacco was accepted as payment for taxes in some of the colonies, and as good as cash.)

Swedish artist Lars Vilks has died. Vilks was most famous for his depictions of the prophet Muhammad, a work of art & exercise in freedom of speech which forced him to live in a secret location with 24/7 security due to constant threats from Islamist extremists
STOCKHOLM — The Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had lived under police protection since his 2007 sketch of the Prophet Muhammad with a dog’s body brought death threats, died from a traffic accident Sunday, Swedish news media reported.Associated Press (https://triblive.com/news/world/threatened-swedish-artist-lars-vilks-reportedly-dead-in-road-accident/)
The accident reportedly involved a truck colliding with a civilian police car in which Lars Vilks and his police protection were traveling, news media said. ...
The cause of the accident was under investigation. ...
Vilks’ life changed radically 13 years ago after he drew a sketch of Muhammad with a dog’s body. Dogs are considered unclean by conservative Muslims, and Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.
Al-Qaida put a bounty on Vilks’ head. In 2010, two men tried to burn down his house in southern Sweden. Last year, a woman from Pennsylvania pleaded guilty in a plot to try to kill him. ...

During the early days of color television, maintaining timing and calibration of the analog color systems was a challenge. To aid in this calibration process, Hank developed the
SMPTE Color Bars and was recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2002 for standardizing and building the first SMPTE color bar generator.
Evidently, he had a hand in a lot of significant developments. Re the color bars test pattern:
In the very early days of color TV (the mid 50s), color sets were very finicky, and often had to be positioned carefully in a room and realigned in the owner's home. The classic Indian head test pattern was also designed for aligning TVs. The marvel of the RCA color television design was that it crammed a bunch more info into a signal that was still compatible with older B&W sets.

All the lefties lining up to say what a great man Colin was. Guess they have short memories of what they said before.
Perhaps it was because he was black. Guess they are lining up for deaths of other great blacks as this is the season
for that sort of virtue signaling. Can't imagine what they will say about a certain black Supreme of long standing or
of a certain black Brain Surgeon of substantial merit.
I would rather call a man great while he is alive and active to change things in the here and now.
Colin Powell was a decent man, but his actions did cost many lives and made the war industry untold millions.
He attacked Hussain about weapons of mass destruction at the, was it a UN court? I remember hearing it on the radio.
Perhaps Limbaugh routed it through his program.
Powell was a good boy and took the stab. That likely caused his death.

With profound sadness we share with you the news that our beloved Ralph Carmichael passed away on October 18 at the age of 94. Without exaggeration, Ralph’s talent and influence has shaped the world of music for generations and will continue to bless and enrich our world for many generations to come. He was extraordinarily gifted, was the consummate professional and a dear friend. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Mar and their family and pray for God’s comfort to surround them. ...
... In 1951, he was invited to score a film for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; in all he wrote the musical score for twenty of their films. For BGEA, he made the funky urban soundtrack for the 1970 film The Cross and the Switchblade. By the late 1950s, secular producers had taken notice of Carmichael's radio and film work. He was invited to assist the composer at the television sitcom I Love Lucy and was soon arranging music for that show as well as Bonanza and The Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Show and for singer Rosemary Clooney. In 1958, Carmichael was hired by producer Jack H. Harris to score his science fiction film, The Blob. With the success of the film, Carmichael was brought back to score Harris' follow-up film, 4D Man. He arranged and composed music for a Bing Crosby Christmas special television program, which prompted his denomination to strongly suggest he not apply for renewal of his ordination. He also composed and conducted the theme music for the 1965 sitcom, My Mother the Car.
His big break came at the end of the 1950s, when his work came to the attention of Capitol Records, who asked him to provide the arrangements for an album of mainly sacred Christmas songs by one of the label's biggest stars, Nat King Cole. The result, The Magic of Christmas, was released for the 1960 festive season, by which time Capitol had already set Carmichael to work with Cole on more secular albums. ...
It is in the field of Christian music that Carmichael has been most prolific. In particular, his experiments in pop-rock style in the 1960s and 1970s have brought him recognition as the "Father of Contemporary Christian Music". He founded Light Records in order to widen the audience for the music of the Jesus People. He was subject to controversy from within the church, being called a heretic for his use of guitars in worship and his adaptations of Gospel songs to big band stylings. ...
Although I may make an exception for particularly heinous people... isn't it poor form to speak ill of the dead? And Gen./Sec. Powell was certainly not someone I would consider heinous.
@jmyrlefuller
Ok,so you don't know anything about him,yet whine about people who know posting info. The evil he has done and abetted will still be happening years from now,no matter how dead he is.
In so doing he brought the black Gospel sound to a wider audience, and Andrae' was a song writer who could evolve that traditional sound into something broader, too.
Peter Scolari, who starred opposite lifelong friend Tom Hanks in the early 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies, died Friday. He was 66.
Scolari, an Emmy winner whose credits also included Newhart and HBO’s Girls, had been living with cancer for the past two years.
A native of New Rochelle, New York, Scolari landed his first major acting role in the short-lived 1980 ABC comedy Goodtime Girls. Later that year, he and a then-unknown Hanks starred in Bosom Buddies, playing two guys who disguise themselves as women to live in an affordable, all-female apartment building.
The show, also on ABC, lasted just two seasons, but it sparked a 40-plus year friendship between the two actors. Scolari and Hanks would work together several times over the next decades, with Scolari appearing in his friend’s directorial debut, That Thing You Do!, and the Hanks-produced HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. The two both did voice work on 2003’s The Polar Express.

Jay Black, lead singer of The Americans, dies at 82
Jay Black, lead singer of The Americans, dies at 82
Black was the stage name of David Blatt. In the early 1960s, a one-hit wonder group known as Jay and the Americans (best known for the treacly "She Cried"), found itself unable to chart a follow-up hit, so lead singer John Traynor departed and the Americans merged with The Empires, a doo-wop group for which Blatt was a vocalist. Blatt took on the "Jay" stage name (anglicizing his last name to Black in the process) and propelled the Americans back into the spotlight with a string of hits featuring his voice, somewhat richer in tone and occasionally more operatic than most pop acts of the 1960s: "Come a Little Bit Closer," "Cara Mia," "This Magic Moment," and several other hits that got lost in the recurrent rotation shuffle. The band eventually broke up in the 1970s, and when it reunited in 2006, it was without Black; the band acknowledged that relations between Black and the rest of the band had been contentious for a long time.
Black, who had been suffering from dementia since 2014, died in 2021 from pneumonia.

I loved that song!!!
....Will last forever..Forever til the end of time RIP
@libertybele
One of the most romantic songs ever recorded. I loved this version, growing up in a time when popular music was still sweet and redolent of life's possibilities.
I also loved the version by Ben E. King and the Drifters, which I include below.
Music is such a deeply personal thing, and it touches us each in ways that we ourselves can only understand.
For me, this song takes me back to my first kiss. It happened at a high school party. It was autumn, and I was a senior. I can still feel the chill in the air and the thrill of the night, the darkness now setting in so early and yet alive with promises I dared not even dream of, because there at the party, to my heart's desire, was a girl. The Girl. The one in my class that I had spent so many long hours thinking of and longing for and imagining in my arms.
A number of us had walked out behind the house and ambled through the woods to the edge of a clearing, talking and laughing, though I recall not what about because my mind was set on only one thing. A week or so before, I had gathered my courage, and walking home from school I told her that I really liked her, and did so with my heart virtually beating a hole through my chest and I remember all these years later only that she was non-committal, but that she smiled and that was all I needed at that moment.
And then, sitting on a tree stump on that cool October night, with a plastic cup of something in my hand, and the music wafting into the woods from the house just beyond... suddenly, she appeared before me. I am certain that I said "Hi" or "Hello", but I cannot recall because the only thing I do remember is that I felt her hands on my knees and just as suddenly, her face was near mine and I could smell her perfume and she kissed me.
And this song, like no other, brings me back to that moment.

Julia Child once said, "If you're afraid of butter, use cream." She lived to 92. :shrug:Ernest Borgnine, a noticeably obese man, lived to be 95. Bruce Lee, the epitome of physical fitness, was dead at 32. You tell me.
Well, perhaps it wasn't exactly a heart healthy meal. Just sayin' 888mouthMy grandmother cooked with butter, goose fat and lard and it wasn't her heart that killed her in her late 80's it was cancer. My mother used nothing but butter, made many rich pastries and deserts, and like her mom made us lots of beef meals. My dad lived to 90 and my mother turns 90 in December and she still uses nothing but butter.
Give me red meat, cheese and real butter (oh and dark chocolate). I told my cardio that the low fat, continual carb , low sugar, limited meat, supposedly heart healthy diet that the American Heart Association recommends, will kill me. He just looked at me and told me to eat more vegs ... I looked at him and responded ... more fruit.
What is killing us is all the fake food ... such as margarine. Most low fat, low carb products have a bunch of preservatives, flavor enhancers and chemicals that are terrible for your health.

Lee Elder, who broke down racial barriers as the first Black golfer to play in the Masters and paved the way for Tiger Woods and others to follow, has died at the age of 87.
The PGA Tour announced Elder’s death, which was first reported Monday by Debert Cook of African American Golfers Digest. No cause was given, but the tour confirmed Elder's death with his family. ...
Elder got into golf as a caddie, since that essentially was the only conduit Black people had to be permitted on the course. He was able to polish his game while serving in the Army and, after his discharge, joined the United Golf Association Tour for Black players in the early 1960s.
He developed into one of the UGA’s best players, winning 18 of 22 tournaments in one dominating stretch, but meager prize money made it tough to earn a living. Finally, at the age of 33, Elder was able to afford PGA qualifying school, where he earned his first tour card for the 1968 season. ...

So, the first thing I thought of when I heard that Bob Dole had shuffled off his mortal coil was to think of that tweet proclaiming “Bob Dole would miss Norm MacDonald” when the comedian passed. I thought of him doing so knowing his own end was coming — having been diagnosed with lung cancer back in February — yet Bob Dole once again using humor with natural timing. Life is more than politics, even when your life has been politics, as Bob Dole well knew from nearly dying before he got a chance to do either. Some things in life, like in politics, are so serious you just have to laugh about them. Including death.
Life is just funny like that. Somewhere on Sunday morning, I like to think, Bob Dole met with Norm MacDonald, they pointed at each other, and simultaneously exclaimed that “Bob Dole has missed Bob Dole” and the two masters of dry wit had a good long laugh about it. Then the laughter trails off, as they both realize Bob Dole is pointing at Norm using Bob Dole’s right arm, and they laugh once again, even harder.
It works just fine now.
Much respect for his military service. :patriot:

For better or : RIP. He was almost 100.
Longtime politician Bob Dole, who was severely wounded in World War II by German gunfire, was honorably promoted to colonel in a private ceremony at the WWII Memorial.
Dole, 95, served as a captain in the 10th Mountain Division before pursuing a political career that included nearly 30 years as a U.S. senator for Kansas and the Republican presidential nominee in 1996.
Surrounded by the memorial's pillars and arches, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley promoted Dole in front of a crowd of Dole's friends and family and other Army leaders.
In its 244-year history, Milley noted, the Army has only honorably promoted three former officers. First, George Washington was promoted to general of the Armies, and then Lt. William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was promoted to captain.
Dole was the only living recipient of such an Army promotion.

Anne Rice, who breathed new life into vampires, dies at 80
By JAKE COYLE
NEW YORK (AP) — Anne Rice, the novelist whose lush, best-selling gothic tales, including “Interview With a Vampire,” reinvented the blood-drinking immortals as tragic antiheroes, has died. She was 80.
Rice died late Saturday due to complications from a stroke, her son Christopher Rice announced on her Facebook page and his Twitter page.
“As a writer, she taught me to defy genre boundaries and surrender to my obsessive passions,” Christopher Rice, also an author, wrote. “In her final hours, I sat beside her hospital bed in awe of her accomplishments and her courage.”
Rice’s 1976 novel “Interview With the Vampire” was later adapted, with a script by Rice, into the 1994 movie directed by Neil Jordan and starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. It’s also set to be adapted again in an upcoming TV series on AMC and AMC+ set to premiere next year.
“Interview With the Vampire,” in which reporter Daniel Molloy interviews Louis de Pointe du Lac, was Rice’s first novel but over the next five decades, she would write more than 30 books and sell more than 150 million copies worldwide. ... South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu dies at 90More at France24 (https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20211226-south-africa-s-archbishop-desmond-tutu-dies-aged-90?fbclid=IwAR1CtHLxN648H01fjPs5D1kd4yt39PsleZgqEV5LBjQF9uCUa6yVd6AO7bA&ref=fb_i)

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who died Sunday at the age of 90, was the moral compass of his beloved "Rainbow Nation", never afraid to speak truth to power, whatever its creed or colour.
Advertising
A tireless activist, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for combatting white minority rule in his country.
"The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation's farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa," President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement.
Famously outspoken, even after the fall of the racist apartheid regime, Tutu never shied away from confronting South Africa's shortcomings or injustices. ...
Tutu believed firmly in the reconciliation of black and white South Africans.
"I am walking on clouds. It is an incredible feeling, like falling in love. We South Africans are going to be the Rainbow People of the world," he said in 1994.
But post-apartheid South Africa increasingly became a source of his despair, as the high hopes of the early days of democracy gave way to disillusionment over violence, inequality and graft.
Never a member of the ANC, Tutu said in 2013 that he would no longer vote for the party, though President Cyril Ramaphosa -- an old friend -- re-built bridges after coming to power in 2018.
Tutu made a rare public appearance in May 2021 to receive his vaccine for Covid-19. He appeared outside of hospital in a wheelchair, and waved but did not speak. ...
Ali VelshiDid his opposition to the fossil fuel industry extend to not using cars or airplanes? Not sure about that. :pondering:
@AliVelshi
Worth noting, as we mark the passing Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, that he was a vocal proponent of divestment - against the apartheid regime, against the illegal occupation of Palestine, and against the fossil fuel industry - as a tool to end injustice.

And the fact he and Mandela's African National Congress had ties and backing by communist parties. That's the dirty little secret about African politics as a whole. The current head of the WHO is an open member of a similar Communist front party in Ethiopia, which should explain everything about the past couple of years.

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who died Sunday at the age of 90,
Somewhat ironically I had a moment of "Mandela Effect" when my wife told me this morning that the Archbishop had died. My immediate response to her was, "I thought he died years ago!". But after searching my memory a bit more, I realized that I simply hadn't heard him spoken about in many years, and just assumed he must have died at some point.
And the fact he and Mandela's African National Congress had ties and backing by communist parties.Do you wonder if his opposition to the fossil fuel industry extended to the Mandela's special necklaces they were so fond of gifting those they disagreed with?

On Christmas Eve, 12/24/2021, we lost a true Legend and Hero in the Special Operations Community….
Commander Richard ‘Demo Dick’ Marcinko was a legendary Navy SEAL during the Vietnam War who went on to lead SEAL Team 2. Following Operation Eagle Claw, the failed attempt to rescue American hostages held in Iran in 1979, he was tasked to create a Navy counterterrorism capability, which he named SEAL Team Six, and he was the unit’s first commander. He later ran a naval base defense program, unofficially called Red Cell.
RIP Commander Richard Marcinko…

Beloved actress, comedian and American icon Betty White has died, just weeks before a milestone birthday ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Betty passed away at her home just before 9:30 AM Friday.
A trailblazer and pioneer in media, Betty had the longest running career for any woman in TV prior to her death -- starring in multiple shows over the past 8 decades, starting way back in 1939.
Betty is perhaps most famous for her lead role as Rose Nylund in "The Golden Girls," which ran from 1985 to 1992. She'd been in TONS of other big hits throughout her life though.
...
We thought it never would happen.https://www.tmz.com/Always loved and respected the lady she was...RIP Betty...my fellow veteran.
R.I.P. Dear Lady. Of all her roles I loved her in "Lake Placid" She played the villain. She dropped about 30 F-bombs as well as others. It was a typical Teen horror flick and she was releasing alligators into the lake. Very dark humor.
