As we are all aware of...15th anniv. of 9/11 is just right around the corner.
On Sept 11th I'm asking that we do the same for our own country as some have done for other countries recently when they have been victims of Radical Islam by changing our avatars.
But instead of using Old Glory as our avatar...we could use the from pages of the news papers from across the country (of from across the Pond for our friends from England) as our avitar...similiar to what I'm already doing.
http://www.september11news.com/
That link provides thumbnails of hundreds of newspaper front pages. Find the one from your hometown or if your like me since mine isn't there...find the one that sums up best how you felt that day.
Just a thought.
Damn...15 years later and I still get tears in my eyes thinking about it.

I remember that I felt shocked and yet numb at the same time. Was in Dallas dealing with parental illness. It was a day I'll never forget.

Done, and my birthday too **nononono*

Bump.

I'm in.
Wingnut, I have that book that your image is based on. It was produced a few months after 9/11 and has hundreds of the major newspaper covers in it.

I dug deep into the link @txradioguy posted and hopped from place to place and found that. I found the pic of Lady Liberty standing tall and in the light in front of a NYC blacked by ash and debris so surreal. What is the books name. I was so many places I couldn't find it agian.

One of my old brigade commanders has his birthday on 9/11 as well. I'm sorry that you have to have such a historic tragic day counterbalance what should be a very happy day.
Oh and FWIW...I read somewhere that this years freshmen/sophomores will be the first high schoolers to have 9/11 taught to them as a history lesson as opposed to a current event.

I'm in too.

Brilliant idea

This is what I saw that morning. I was getting ready to go into work a bit late. Stood there with my toothbrush in my mouth for quite some time. Horrifying pictures.
Had 4 immediate family members on active duty at the time.
-
I'll change from my Derpy postal pony to my local rag for the time being.
She comes back after.
-
<- I did it too, I should have mentioned.
-
Also, if memories are part of the thread, I was not far from having turned 18, in college, and a week before being employed the USPS.
I was heading to class that morning in my beat up old car and turned on the talk radio station as I typically did. (Was in to talk radio from my pre teens).
It looked like a plane got lost and hit the building.
I remember what bridge I was driving on when the second plane hit live on air. Almost drove off of it.

Can't find an image of the front page of any North Dakota Paper, much less the local one.
-
I'm in. Too many people have forgotten that day already.

Minot nor Williston? Hard to believe.
Lived up there for 6 months in 2014.

I checked Minot, Williston, Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck, and Dickinson. Maybe I just didn't look the right places, but no joy.
-
Nice idea.

We were shopping in one of those general goods/knick knacks stores. The cashier, who was also the owner, used the store announcement system to tell us the first plane had hit. Got to the front of store, where a TV was showing the live broadcast, and we just watched, numb, until the second plane hit. The owner lookked at us and said "I'm closing, people. Please leave."
Got home, got on the phone, and was re-upped an hour later.

@txradioguy
Awesome...thank you.
@mystery-ak has been gracious enough to allow me to post the 9/11 thread this year. Lots of memories to share, a complete timeline of events and I expect lots of kleenex.
I'll be honest I started tearing up just reading the reflections y'all posted here already. It's still a very emotional time for me.
-
I'm in, too. Well done.

Don't feel bad Joe. Here in Idaho we are 20 years behind the times. So this hasn't been reported here yet. Maybe in 5 years...

Thx for sharing.

This is a brilliant idea and I bless you all for thinking of it and doing it. I encourage everyone to do it.
As I said in a diffrent thread a few weeks ago, I worked for a news media company. I helped cover it ...
I was supposed to be there but my appt was moved to a week later, September 18. I guess I cheated death.
For my own mental Heath, no radio, no tv, no papets, no Internet that day. I genuflect on low lucky I am to be alive. I don't need that avatar- it's tattooed on my heart.
-
I'm going to change my Facebook profile pic to a 9/11 image tomorrow, and keep it up for two weeks in commemoration of the day.
-
A symbol of hope amidst the carnage, as found.
-
Yeah, so subsequent to the conversation on the "Welcome FR Refugees" thread, here is the info on the Tear Drop 9/11 Memorial in my current avatar in case anyone is wondering:

Thanks for the link! I had no idea it existed (until I saw the pic), much less was so big.
-
My take, with a Texas twist....
-
If anyone needs help with finding and installing an avatar please pm me.

Done. We just got home from vacation and I saw this thread. This is a great idea. I am going to do the same on facebook.

Bumping once again for the 19th Anniversary. Seems like now more than ever we need to remember stuff like this.
A very deep and heartfelt thank you to everyone who participates.
-
On this day... 18 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning tomorrow. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.
Never forget.
