Title: A Festival of Cruelty

The phantom pilot who's tossed live turkeys from his airplane for 15 years now over the annual Turkey Trot Festival at Yellville, Ark., is a phantom no more. Now that he's been succeeded by a different pilot flying a different aircraft, he's proudly revealed his identity. He turns out to be Dana Woods, pharmacist and alderman from Mountain View.

"My plane is on the ground," Alderman Woods texted during the festival, playing the hero of this sad story rather than the villain he is. Naturally enough, he's offered a lame excuse for his (mis)behavior, mainly that his critics care more for birds than they do for people. He claims all these "bird-loving" types who've spoken up for the poor turkeys had nothing to say when a 4-year-old child was killed in the vicinity last November. His is an old and unconvincing rhetorical ploy that ought to fool no one.

Much ado about nothing.
As a rule, turkeys fly just fine. They may not be able to fly as high as where the plane is that drops them, but I bet they can glide it out alright.

Certainly they can stand a drop from a courthouse roof. They fly up into trees way higher than that around here.

I watched a couple vids about it that seemed to focus on the turkey getting tangled in power-lines, or landing in a creek (their legs are tied so they don't go too far), or getting hit by traffic... So by that complaint, they must not be plummeting to their deaths as a rule.

You're talking wild turkeys, right?  The domestic ones can't fly, to my knowledge.  Worse, they can't rut either.  Talk about one shitty life.

Yes they can, unless their wings have been clipped since their last molt. And of course they can run - That's why they tie their legs.

Domestic turkeys raised free range are no different than wild, except that they go sleep in a coop at night.

Interesting.  I knew I should have taken that job on the local turkey farm in my youth.  Trouble is, I hated the little peckers.

The ones I raised (free range before we knew what free range was) couldn't fly.  They could eat and that was about it.

That's because the ones that can't fly up into trees to roost were coyote bait a long time ago.

I dunno what to tell you - Maybe it is predator pressure like @Smokin Joe  said, maybe it is a difference in selection in breeds here vs there... but turkeys are not uncommon here, domestic or wild, and providing that they are range birds, there isn't much different. It is not uncommon to see a domestic turkey a story or two up in the pines, roosted just like a wild one.

Well I am fairly certain there are coyotes about everywhere... but I get the point. Perhaps another predator here drives em up into the trees, tho coyotes would be my first guess too.

The Shenandoah Valley was known for poultry production when I lived there, but those domestic (poultry farm) turkeys were so dumb they'd drown in a heavy cloudburst, looking up to see what hit them. Those are the sort most folks are used to, and they do just fine on the table. Make 'em fend for themselves, and a few will get smart or die, and the survivors produce smarter birds...and so on.
