Older Americans are disproportionately more likely to share fake news on Facebook, according to a new analysis by researchers at New York and Princeton Universities. Older users shared more fake news than younger ones regardless of education, sex, race, income, or how many links they shared. In fact, age predicted their behavior better than any other characteristic — including party affiliation.....

I find that really hard to believe.  I've just been on another social platform, being lectured to by leftists and most of them are young.  As, in AOC age.

That's because the over 65 crowd is who uses Facebook anymore.

@Sanguine

I don't use Facebook; too busy for that.

I had to take a couple weeks off Bookface.  I was between houses and I didn't have WiFi in the Castle yet.  Got it now!

Yes, yes it is.  Of a different sort, and one that you probably wouldn't enjoy.

What are the age, education and political leanings, of those "fake news" creators?

What are the age, education and political leanings, of those conducting the study?

Another hypothesis; older people came from eras with more honest news media.

The media has grown more biased and dishonest.

Older people mistakenly might think the internet is one big honest fun thing, instead of the dishonest, deceptive, manipulative, exploitive thing it really is.

My wife encouraged me to get on FB. So I joined and read some of the postings, made friends, made a few comments etc.
It's great.....I mean where else can you find out immediately that a grandchild or great granddaughter just made their first bowel movement?  I'm hooked.  Plus, one of my aunts makes daily inspirational postings  which have utterly transformed my life.  Like making sure to rotate my tires every other oil change.  22222frying pan

My cousin is one of the worst.  He posts articles and shares crap that shouldn't pass anybody's smell test.  Then he will turn around and post links to "hoax slayer" to warn everyone about hoaxes that, again, nobody would be fooled by.  And don't get me started about all of the friend requests he accepted during the 2016 campaign with profile pics of younger scantily clad women.  No, those beauties do not want to be your friend, they aren't even real!

Funny how so many took this personally and got triggered- especially as it was very clear in the article that it wasn't even differentiated by party affiliation.

Two of the most notorious sites on Facebook for creating fake news- both for the sole purpose of trolling the other side, is Occupy Democrats on the left and America's Freedom Fighters (and about a dozen other pages that seem to have been started by the same group on the right). Go to either page and look at the comments and shares. Old lefties and old righties both share bogus news- even when some are obviously fake (the latter site mentioned above even puts in small print on many fake articles that it is fake). In the same comments, it is usually younger people who are mocking them for falling for it or sharing it.
