I thought we needed a live thread for the eclipse.
Happy eclipse day everyone!!!!
-
We decided not to go outside and risk blindness, halitosis, cooties or the heartbreak of psoriasis, so we made an indoor to-do list. I will iron and vacuum. Mr. M will unclog a shower head and do the dishes. Both of us will concentrate on NOT PANICKING!!!

Thanks, @Freya!!
Listening to Also sprach Zarathustra and The Planets while I wait. And, with irony,
Clair de Lune and Moonlight Sonata.
Prepared to change my plans a bit, based on crowds and bladder. Walmart parking lot was filled by 9 am. The large park had line down the highway by 8 am.

Prepare To Be Amazed
Today we bear witness to precisely how much control man has over God’s universe:

That’s right, exactly…none. But hey, if any of the brilliant scientists who believe we can slow down, reverse, or halt global warming/cooling want to take a crack at stopping the eclipse, be my guest. Could be a good trial run to see how well toilet paper restrictions, cow fart mediation and forced public transportation will work to stop climate change in its tracks. ... MOTUS A.D. I suppose if an eclipse can't be stopped, that must mean we don't influence climate! *****rollingeyes*****
And that must, by extension, mean we can't avoid getting wet in a rainstorm. Those umbrellas are hoaxes, I tell ya!

Don't look directly at it without eclipse treats.

In the 95% zone....and it's raining today.
That's a bummer. Sorry to hear it.
We're the 95% zone, too, but it's sunny with nothing but a sparse scattering of high, thin clouds at the moment. I'm hoping it holds. The kids are quite looking forward to it. Either that, or they're just happy to have an excused absence from school today.
-
I think we're in the 83% zone. Currently sunny. Peak eclipse time will be a little over 3-1/2 hours from now. I'll be vacuuming.
-
I'm going to use my IR filter. Its virtually black so I should get a few decent pics.
-
I am in the total zone. Start time in an hour, more or less. I have cheapo cameras, but I will do my best.
I have to try to make it to the doctor again today. That's right. Another blood test.
Live pic out on the freeway. Here they come. My doc is 14 miles up the traffic side of the freeway.

Local channels here are proclaiming this the Great American Eclipse. I think the hoopla is hilarious, but I'm an old bag so a solar eclipse is nothing new. The younger generation probably never experienced a total eclipse in their lifetime.
I just hope no one is stupid enough to try to watch the eclipse with the naked eye. The state transportation department issued a warning not to try to drive with those special glasses on. Apparently, the only thing you can see with those glasses is the sun. Everything else is dark. But I'm sure someone will ignore the warning and try to drive with those glasses on.
-
Thunderstorms and overcast skies make watching the eclipse here in Northern Illinoisy somewhat problematical.....
-
I'm stuck on conference calls all afternoon so if anyone has any interesting sightings of the dragon that eats the sun, please let me know. ;)
By the way, unless you have a 18 stop ND filter (or greater) or level 14 welder's glass, do not point your camera at the sun. Digital camera sensors are very sensitive and you can damage one very quickly. There is some bad information going around Facebook about using your cell phone camera in selfie mode to watch it. That is still pointing the camera's sensor at the sun and you risk major damage.
Here is an article where they tested pointing a DSLR at the sun just to show what will happen to the sensor.
https://www.slashgear.com/do-not-shoot-the-eclipse-without-the-right-camera-equipment-21495919/
Long story short, the lens serves just like if you were burning ants with a magnifying glass, only right at a very expensive sensor.
The result isn't a pretty sight.

You will need a ND filter of at least 18 stops. Just an IR filter won't protect it. It protects against IR, but just the focused beam of light through your lens can damage your sensor. (see post above).

@AbaraXas
I have no intention of trying it, but just out of curiosity could you cover the lens of your phone camera with a pair of eclipse glasses without frying it?

That should work. Eclipse glasses are supposedly good enough (although some I've seen for sale worry me).
The cheaper option is glass from a welding helmet. Generally you can pick up one of these for $5 (too late now). You would need at least level 14 but that's common. Welding glass is how everyone viewed it up until this year when suddenly these special glasses were available all over.

Interesting. I'll let someone else try it and report back on the results!

Slightly overcast.
Went to the grocery store. Would you believe the manager told me he's closing it for ten minutes or so that the employees can watch?

My son is working at a local grocery store today. He and the other employees are taking turns popping out to catch a quick look-see.
It's nice and clear here. And the sun currently looks like Pac-Man. Well, maybe like Pac-Man yawning, anyway.

They should have rescheduled it for Sunday when fewer people are working and kids are out of school.
;)

A thead is something that happens when you burn the R cells out of the back of your eyes by staring at the sun.
Almost half way.
I'm so excited. I like astronomical events. I saw a total lunar eclipse during Hale-Bopp. It was so cool.
-
THAT WAS FREAKING
AWESOME
-
We only get about 85% coverage where we are. Bought a couple pairs of glasses. Annnnnnnd.... it's raining.
-
I am very glad I got to see that. Magnificent. Truly magnificent. We have perfect weather.
-
I recorded it. We'll see what I got. I was using the worst Handycam Sony made.
-
Well that looked.... different... I don't think that was a moon.

LOL @AbaraXas @Polly Ticks
-
After days of local weather guessers predicting clear weather for the eclipse, it's cloudy and hazy here. If there is an eclipse going on outside now, I can't tell.
-
Cleared off here just enough, starting to look weird outside.
-
Sun shining, about 80% here. Used triple thickness of aluminized mylar for a filter, short glances only. Noticeably darker out, but not nearly as dark as the one I saw in Grand Forks many years ago (78-79).
-
Slightly overcast.
Went to the grocery store. Would you believe the manager told me he's closing it for ten minutes or so that the employees can watch?

I got some good pictures earlier, but just as we're about ready to enter totality the clouds moved in.
-

Because unlike most eclipses, this one is only seen from the USA, no other countries.
-
Cooler here, by several degrees. Did someone suck up the CO2?
-
At maximum here right now. Clouds moved in a bit, worked to our favor because you can look right at it now. Pretty cool.
-
I've seen a partial, blood moon, and the northern lights. So... I missed this btw. I thought it was at 2:30 EST not at 1:30 EST. And I forgot about my welding helment
Whoops.
-

I've also saw that comet in the late 90's. Had no idea that's what it was.
-
Cooler here, by several degrees. Did someone suck up the CO2?
Hahaha. C'mon now, you know sun output has no affect on temperature. /s
-
Hale-Bopp!
-
Ah shucks....cloud coverage here but you could tell it was happening as it looked like dusk and eerily quiet...
-

I have a Celestron telescope and used the sun filter with a digital camera.
-
My neck of the woods = Obscuration 95.48%
I'm truly surprised at how bright it still is outside. I would've thought it would get quite a bit darker with only 4.52% of the sun visible.
-
Wow. That was INCREDIBLE. 100% totality. The diamond ring effect was SPECTACULAR!
Saw venus, orion and probably the most interesting thing was the eeriness of the lighting all around. It was a very weird darkness.

Yay, still cloudy here, but no rain, and got the little guy out with our special glasses to see it. He thought it was pretty neat, and what a great science lesson for today.

The light definitely takes on a different quality.
We got a couple of the neighbor kids to take a quick peek, too.
I'm not sure they understand fully what they have seen yet, or how long before they see another one.

My neighbors took pictures. We ended up having a block party.
Several neighbors had cereal boxes, I was lucky enough to have real glasses, and shared them with folks. Out came the cans of soda and bottled water, lawn chairs and we just had a grand old time.
I haven't met a lot of my new neighbors and it was really nice.
As soon as I get the pictures I'll post.
Did anyone notice how weird the birds got?

Could people be any stupider? I posted a tongue-in-cheek comment on a Facebook page for parents of children in my county's school district on which many were agonizing over taking their little darlings out of school for this Big Event. My comment:
Those saying this was a "once in a lifetime" experience must have known something the rest of us don't, considering the next one will occur in only 7 years.
(We will be directly in the 100% zone in 2024, as opposed to 80% or so today).
Here's what someone replied: life is too short and tomorrow is not guaranteed so that's why some feel it may be the only chance, my kids got to experience today at home.
Good grief, I know we all could die in the next minute, you silly person. I was joking!!!! *****rollingeyes*****
I guess she doesn't care her kids are going to graduate from our school district with only a rudimentary knowledge of math and English, and no critical thinking skills whatsoever. But they saw a freakin' eclipse, so there's that.

Heres a cool trick. You don't have to stare at the sun.. I just looked for 20 or 30 seconds, then when you look away the view is etched into your eyeballs. Problem solved!
-
I took some stills from my video. Cleaned them up a bit. You know me. Taped a lens from a pair of eclipse glasses over the camera lens. Then screwed two pieces of 2x4 in an "L" and screwed the back end down to the picnic table so I could rotate it. A ramp. Duct taped the camera to the stand and started recording.
Then watched it through another pair of eclipse glasses. And yelled and yelled some more and did the Snoopy dance at totality and diamond ring.

We got 67% coverage. It was immediately noticeable to me when I walked out of the house. I'm really surprised when people say they expected it to be darker.
I was thrilled by the whole thing. I probably don't have a scientific bone in my body, so it's not the scientific aspect that fascinates me. It's the wonder and awe of the world the Creator provided for us. It's the majesty and splendor that causes your heart beat faster and your eyes to fill with tears of emotion even though you can't quite say why.
I can't wait for April of 2024! I'm already planning my trip to North Texas!

This is the second substantial eclipse in my lifetime, the first one being back in '94, when I was still in grade school. That one made a very near pass over us so I had a general idea of what to expect as far as brightness.
When the day started there were a few thunderstorms and I was starting to get a little nervous, then a few more clouds popped up just as the eclipse started. Then they went away a few minutes later, and—I guess the best way to describe it is that when the clouds cleared, everything seemed dimmer. It was daylight, just not as bright, which really messed with my eyes (and no, I didn't look directly into the sun! The professionals do a better job with getting images than I ever can). That, and there was a light haze, which gave everything a kind of eerie look.

That being said, maybe I should have "(flown my) Lear jet to Nova Scotia."

You're so vain, you probably think this post is about you.

I blew it with video of the eclipse itself. I had even bought a new camera with fast video for this!
I was distracted by kids who were asking me questions (and I'm always glad to help the kids learn), but I did get to see shadow bands and I'm hoping they turn out on video.
I hate to break it to those who saw only a partial, but totality takes it to a whole other level far beyond. Now I know I must make it to 2024. I'm hooked.

At least my horse naturally won.

Us too. There is no way we will miss it God willing. Thinking about looking for a Carribean cruise to view it from....

The traffic here is bad. I can't get out of town to go fishing.
I had to travel 100+ miles in bumper-to-bumper, stop and go. It was awful.
Several hours later, I'll finally be able to grab a few hours rest before I have to attend what I'm sure will be the most boring training known to mankind.

I'm saving up for it. I hear Texas is the best place to see it.
I don't think I'll be alive for the one after that, in 56.
I'm glad you saw the entire thing @Suppressed

Hang onto them for 2024. That eclipse will be right in my region's wheelhouse, so to speak.
You also might catch a Venus or Mercury transit a lot sooner.

You and that apricot scarf!

You and that apricot scarf!
I think it was the gavotting that did it.

Heres a cool trick. You don't have to stare at the sun.. I just looked for 20 or 30 seconds, then when you look away the view is etched into your eyeballs. Problem solved!
I am still watching it! :silly:

Watching the eclipse is like beating a sore pecker. You just can't beat it.

Snopes says that it's a composite?
Beautiful anyway!

It is a nice pic. But when I first saw it I thought the sun was in front of the clouds.

@DCPatriot
Obviously NASA photographers can do some fantastic work! I'm stealin that one as well.
-
Well, sh*t......if it's not legit,.....phffffffft!
But still pretty cool.

It's certainly a very believable pic. I live on the coast and have seen my share of amazing sunsets over the water. I was never able to capture the beauty of God's handiwork because of my inexpensive cameras. I just figured this was a combination of great equipment and being in the correct place to capture the beauty of the moment.
The bottom line concerning any art depicting beautiful things in nature is that none can truly capture the grandeur of the Creator's handiwork.
