California’s fast-food minimum wage hike is backfiring

California’s fast-food minimum wage hike has been in effect for just one month, and the consequences are proving to be fewer hours and potentially fewer jobs for workers.

Pollo West Corporation, the largest franchisee of El Pollo Loco restaurants in California, has said that its franchises went from profitable to losing money overnight when the fast-food wage hike went into effect. It also said that the franchises have reduced worker hours by 10%. Meanwhile, the restaurants had raised prices in February to prepare for the wage hike, leading to a 3% decline in business.

In total, fast food prices have gone up in California by 10% since September, a larger increase than in any other state. Restaurants have already passed those prices on to consumers, as was expected, and are cutting hours and adding kiosks. Fewer hours for employees means less money, fewer sales to consumers means less business, which means fewer hours for employees, and automated kiosks mean a reduced need for employees, which means fewer hours (or jobs) for employees.

Are you starting to see how the “minimum wage” ends up backfiring on the very employees it supposedly benefits?

Republicans trailing in key Senate races even as Trump holds leads

Former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in most polls in key swing states, but in many of those states’ pivotal Senate races, GOP candidates are lagging behind.

An Emerson College-the Hill poll released on Tuesday shows Trump leading Biden in seven swing states, while in five of those states’ Senate races, the leading Republican candidate is behind the Democrat.

In Pennsylvania, the former president holds a 47%-45% lead over Biden, but Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) holds a 46%-42% lead over GOP challenger David McCormick. The Senate race has narrowed in the Keystone State in recent months, according to the pollster, with a February survey showing Casey holding a 10% lead.

In Wisconsin and Nevada, both incumbent Democratic senators who are attempting to fend off Republican challengers are leading, while Trump maintains a lead over Biden. In the Badger State, Trump leads Biden 47%-45%, while Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) leads Republican Eric Hovde 46%-43%. In the Silver State, Trump has a 45%-44% lead over Biden, while Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) has a 45%-37% lead over Republican Sam Brown.

In open seats currently held by senators who caucus with Democrats, Republicans are also trailing the Democratic candidates, according to the survey.

In Arizona, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) leads Republican Kari Lake 45%-43% in the Senate race, while in the presidential race, Trump leads Biden 48%-44%. In Michigan, Trump leads Biden in the presidential race 45%-44%, while in the Senate race Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) leads former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers 42%-40%.

In the five of the states where Trump is leading, he lost to Biden in 2020, and in all those states, except Wisconsin, Republicans have lost the most recent Senate races in either 2020 or 2022.

Why was she allowing her dog to run wild especially on other peoples property? She is an idiot.

Entirely common in the sticks... Like I said, my dogs are seldom on a leash, and we visit other farms all the time. Once introduced to the yard dogs at the farm, the visiting dog looks forward to seeing his buddies - Same goes for roundup. Cowboys from all over descend - Every one of em with a dog. It's a great thing to see all those dogs come together and work the herd.

Hunting camp - SAME. But worse. Mostly Husky based dogs up in there. Mountain dogs are gonna fight till they get a pecking order figured out. Then they're fine.

The idea that dogs must be leashed is only demanded by people who pick up poop in baggies.

Dog was killing chickens.  I doubt she'd have put it down if not for that fact.

That alone. AND it bit her in the process.

All done. Dirt nap.

It's interesting, the difference in the argument on this thread. All the folks I see defending her are folks I know to be Country. There is a wide gap that shows how far folks can be from reality.

Folks get freaked out with the idea that I can love my dog, but still pull that trigger when it becomes necessary.
Must be because I can also love a steer, feed it every day, look after it for its own good - Feed it cubes from my hand... But all the while, still for that one bad day... when I send him off to freezer camp.

It's a hundred times worse to do to your dog... Maybe a thousand times worse... But if you have it to do... That shows me she has the balls for it - less often found in a woman - and the integrity to tackle hard decisions.

She'll do. Damn straight. And it boggles me that folks would frame that as a fault.

Nice thing about the AR platform is that all it takes is different upper and maybe different mags and you have a choice of 15? calibers you can fire using a standard .556 lower receiver, so the argument about AR's being useless for hunting fails.

Sorta. .308? 30.06? Serviceable for deer. Elk if you're lucky and can get close. Decent. But just barely reaching into big iron. Good to 150-250 yards, maybe. Pigs, I guess (I ain't got those around here)...
Super good varmint gun in the .223... I've said as much. So yeah... hunting, I guess.

Popular enough I guess, since most folks just go for deer.

When it gets interesting... Big magnum rounds... collapsible. Something you could pack in, then assemble and reach across mountains... Enough poop to go after bighorn and mountain goat, elk over 400 yards...

You ain't even in the ballpark for moose, griz, and kodiak

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

The proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency's move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public comment period and a review by an administrative judge, the agency would eventually publish the final rule.

The proposal will be formally signed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, whose agency has ultimate oversight of the DEA, according to another person familiar with the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. Garland's signature throws the full weight of the Justice Department behind the move and appears to signal its importance to the Biden administration.

It comes after President Joe Biden called for a review of federal marijuana law in October 2022 and moved to pardon thousands of Americans convicted federally of simple possession of the drug. He has also called on governors and local leaders to take similar steps to erase marijuana convictions.

“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden said in December. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”
