An NFL official told the teams not to worry over the league’s crashing TV ratings, and said that the election and COVID are the reasons for lower viewership.
Sports Business Journal recently reported that NFL media operations man, Brian Rolapp, sent a memo to all the teams to allay their fears over the consistently bad ratings. Rolapp reasoned that both presidential politics and coronavirus hysteria was naturally diverting the attention of fans and resulting in fewer viewers.
“The 2020 presidential election and other national news events are driving substantial consumption of cable news, taking meaningful share of audience from all other programming,†reporter John Ourand claimed that Rolapp told the teams. “Historically, NFL viewership has declined in each of the past six presidential elections.â€
Rolapp also pointed to the coronavirus as another reason for the lower ratings.
“The pandemic has caused several major sports to postpone their schedules, resulting in an unprecedented fall calendar,†Rolapp said. “The result is a crowded content marketplace driving a bifurcation of sports viewers across multiple events.â€

Why is ESPN letting Max Kellerman bully their fans and broadcast political propaganda?

Last week, Max Kellerman decided, yet again, to use a daily sports-talk show to peddle lies about the Black Lives Matter protests that have ignited into violence and destruction across the country. ... Equipped with a smug grin and a live microphone, Kellerman began his crusade to cover up what any American with a smartphone and a Twitter account has learned this summer: Black Lives Matter protests have encouraged destruction from behind a deceitful banner of peace.
Kellerman baldly stated that only “7%†of these protests have led to violence and that this minority, however destructive, still belongs under a broad definition of peaceful protest. ...
ESPN is currently confronted with its worst ratings in 41 years. “First Take,†hosted by Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman, brings in the channel’s highest viewership, at roughly 211,000. That’s only enough viewers to rank “First Take†at number 93 of all cable shows. Clay Travis, the host of “Outkick the Coverage,†recently put this number in context: evidently, “Smuggler: Secret Stash†on National Geographic has twice as many viewers as “First Take.â€
The network is destroying itself from within. ESPN Bracing for Major Cost Cuts

Sources inside and outside of ESPN say that the network is bracing for major cost cuts in 2020, including the potential layoffs of hundreds of employees.
ESPN currently has about 4,000 employees in Bristol, CT and another 2,500 employees in other offices across the United States and the world.
This news won’t come as any surprise to those who have been following the media business and/or Disney. NBC Universal layoffs impacted up to 10 percent of their 35,000 employees, including many at NBC Sports. CBS News was hit with layoffs in May. Fox Sports laid off 50-100 staffers in July. We could go on and on naming media organizations, both in and out of sports, who have had to slash their budgets lately. ...
