Here’s a just posted tweet from White House reporter Ari Shapiro:
“Other lefty columnists headed into the West Wing as a group. POTUS coffee? Carney meeting? Anyone?”
The columnists spotted were Jonathan Capehart, Josh Marshall, and Ezra Klein, among others. LINK

It should be noted that this West Wing media meeting was held at approximately the same time reports were coming out regarding the top IRS official pleading the 5th prior to her Congressional testimony on the IRS intimidation scandal.

...and it looks like we have the talking point- make the Tea Party groups appear to be the corrupt ones. From Ezra Kelin this came out right after the supposed meeting.
The IRS controversy isn’t about taxes. It’s about disclosure.
At some level, the scandal around the IRS’s targeting of conservative 501(c)4 groups has nothing to do with taxes. That may sound weird – 501(c)4 is a section of the Internal Revenue Code, the entire 501(c) section exists to list groups that are exempt from some federal taxes, the IRS is the tax man, etc.
But there’s no universe in which the groups in question are going to pay taxes. Think about it. Let’s say they instead register as 527 groups, enabling them to make unlimited independent expenditures. Those organizations don’t have to pay taxes on contributions they receive either. Or maybe they want to be super-PACs (which are 527s, technically, for tax purposes), which can spend unlimited amounts to openly support candidates. They don’t pay taxes on contributions either.

Given that the head of the exempt organizations division appears ready to take the Fifth instead of testifying to Congress, this all-hands-on-deck appears to be aimed at isolating possible criminal charges to the lone sacrificial goat and, in particular, insulating Obastard.

Uh, no. The issue is not whether these groups will pay taxes, it's about whether those who support them can take a charitable deduction for any donations. By delaying or preventing the deductions the IRS served the interests of the Obama campaign by making it extremely difficult for the disfavored groups to raise funds and therefore engage in political activities, including advertising.
Still it will now be interesting if this, the no tax liability dodge, is the tactic the Liberals will adopt.
