Back in the day my mother asked me to get her a set of songs from Time Life... it was a 50s set and rather expensive... Mom has since passed and I now play the tunes on occasion for memory sake...

My late father got his start in broadcasting as a radio DJ after WWII (he went on to TV by 1951). He had hundreds of 78s, and we grew up with an appreciation for the music of that era. My sister - an aspiring clarinetist - loved Benny Goodman, and had the chance to meet him when she was in high school. She was so starstruck she couldn't speak. Her friend had to say, "Mr. Goodman this is Mary and she's one of your biggest fans."
You know Pookie, seems to me a lot of white folks used to rip off colored folk's songs.... Sorta the reverse of today's rap music....
I am too old to care if I am called racist somehow by that surmise... but sure seems that way. Just didn't know so many hits had original artists from the black community. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for posting. Since this has been my ringtone for about 15 years, my natural reflex was to reach for my phone. happy77 Then I realized I didn't have to answer the phone and could actually get down and get funky to the music. Never mind that it's almost 3 a.m. This and so many others give me the "can't help its" and I "can't sit down" regardless of the time of day (or night).
@AllThatJazzZ
What an excellent selection for a ringtone! For many years, for a ringtone, I've used the Red Phone from the "In Like Flint" movie and for text I cut one of the "YOW!"s off the Zappa "Live at the Fillmore East" Album.
@Sighlass
Obviously I didn't get here in time to enjoy the oldies within the 3-day listening window. That didn't keep me from sitting up till the wee hours of the morning singing a few lines from each song or sometimes an entire song of the ones you had listed in your posts. I'm a little hoarse today, but I had fun cycling through all those oldies. Thanks for starting this thread.
To @pookie18 and others who are posting links to YouTube. Would it be possible to provide a name and an artist when posting those links? It's so frustrating to click over and find that the video has been removed. If we had the info, we could go searching for the same version uploaded by another YouTuber. That's what I learned to do on my YouTube playlists. I always add the info about the video in the "edit" section of my playlist. Learned that lesson the hard way, but it's serving me well now as I can almost always find another upload.
@Elderberry
Before "Honky Tonk," my ringtone was "Boot Scootin' Boogie." Funny story about that. I was in the produce department at Kroger when my phone began to ring. It took me a minute to fish it out of my purse and answer it. Just as I did, a woman who had moved toward the music said, "Oh, I wish you hadn't answered it. I wasn't through dancing to it!" She was someone I could completely identify with. :dancer:
Re your ringtone and text notification ... I'm not cool enough to be familiar with them. I went to YouTube to see what I could learn. Zappa is so not me, and the only "In Like Flynn" I'm familiar with was in the 70s and starred James Coburn. So, as you can see, I'm old, uncool and a bit stodgy (old fashioned) in my musical taste. It's okay. I own it. It's part of my charm. :whistle:

@AllThatJazzZ
The Red Phone was used in both of the James Coburn movies "Our Man Flint" in 1966 and "In Like Flint" in 1967. I was told it was also used in an Austin Powers movie.
Raymond Scott Quintette - "Powerhouse"
Also known as that little ditty from countless Looney Tunes cartoons.
@Elderberry
Gotta love that red phone tone. That sound is parked somewhere in the deepest recesses of my gray matter. It's been decades since I saw that movie, so it was only vaguely familiar. How often are people around you able to identify its origin?
Thanks ATJ, I started the thread, but bow to those that know the era much better than I could ever dream to know it. Post a song, I learn for your knowledge and benefit from it more than you know.
I have felt pretty good the last couple of months... so I am not here as much as I previously was... when I feel good I am working in the yard and doing projects that needed done a long time ago. My hands have toughened up, I feel like a man once more. Thank you Jesus.
@AllThatJazzZ
No one ever nailed it, that then came up to me. Several people that did thought they recognized it as the Austin Powers crude copy.

Thank you for posting that! I think of that song from time to time, but by the time I get around to finding it, it's already slid off my brain. Too much data on this ol' hard drive.
That song always reminds me of my mother. She got such a kick out of it. Would dance to it and would sing along, even with the trilling sound that you so excellently spelled out. She had an awful voice, but I loved hearing her get down to the song.

My parents gave me a 2nd-hand red Comet for a graduation present. Seeing this radio brought back so many memories of cruising the main drag in town or going down to Galveston and cruising the beach. I remember driving down Seawall Boulevard and all us girls singing along to "Help Me Rhonda." IIRC, it was the #1 song that summer ('65). What fun memories! We still get together every couple of months for 5-hour lunches.
Thanks for sparking those memories for me!
@Sighlass
My old computer coughs and sputters when I try to access these things, so I always mosey over to YouTube and play them. I wasn't really familiar with the first one, so I found it at YT and played it. It sounded only vaguely familiar, but what really caught my attention was this image (below) on the video.

What?! No buttons? Did you have to actually dial to your favorite stations?
@AllThatJazzZ
Well to be fair, I had the 8-track hanging under the dash...
That was late 70's early 80's... Listening to a whole lot of Waylon and Willie, Johnny Paycheck, Chris LeDoux. and Mo Bandy...
And oddly enough, a full compliment of the Beach Boys. Them, Peter, Paul, and Mary, AND the Kingston Trio... There ain't a song they made I don't know by heart.
Funny how long that good ol stuff stayed relevant.
edit: And BTW, We only had two stations on the AM back then, so the push button thing was not a problem...

@AllThatJazzZI had a '79 Lincoln I picked up for $500, long after it left the showroom. Still had the factory 8 track and even a CB radio! Whatta boat, great on the highway! Only problem was the 400 modified under the hood. Can't idle it to warm it up (it carbons up), and were supposed to warm it up on the fly, which just doesn't work in North Dakota winters (no defrost!).

I have 35 on shuffle play right now, over a sound bar that came off a junked monitor....but it sounds great (far better than the speakers on this laptop!).
Awesome Smoke, noticed you had bookmarked a few threads, do you have a favorite era? ....Well, I'm a fan of do-wop type music. You can always find something to sing or harmonize with (as best I can, anyway--there's a reason I'm a geologist, when I sing the rocks don't throw themselves), and besides all that, it's upbeat, full of energy. I like that era best, but it goes primarily through the 50s and 60s.
Nevermind... someone will get upset you didn't pick their fave... so lets just enjoy the music from them all.

Doo-wop/sock hop.
:thumbsup:
I enjoy many genres, but my favorite music era is from mid-50s to mid-60s. It was my era. The music I first danced to. First fell in love to. First got my heart broken to. Viva doo-wop!
Dude(ette)! We could have cruised together! I love everything you mentioned and know lyrics to about a million songs. Hyperbole? Of course, but my mother always said that if the Holy Bible were put to music, I would be able to sing it from Genesis to Revelation.
Can you still sing "Merry Minuet"? "Scotch & Soda"?

I heard that... Cowboyin is like that... Cows are a pretty forgiving audience.
Me, rockabilly, southern rock, outlaw country... Mostly where I live, but I like all of it from folk through 50's rock and blues, and country all the way along...
@AllThatJazzZ
Definitely a dude... I checked just yesterday... :laugh:
Me= Much the same way... If I can sing it or whistle to it, I will never forget it. And I can prolly pick it too. But I am limited to that... I get about into the Eagles or so, and can't get much further... Went nearly solid Country about when the big-hair bands came out, and can't get any of the newer stuff... Can't sing it, can't whistle it, so I have naught to do with it... :shrug:
And yes I do a pretty good cover of Roger Whitaker's 'Spanish Whistler', And can yodel with the best of em... Or at least that's what the cows tell me. :shrug:
Oh yeah... No problemo... Like I said. And I can pick em too... Not like I could. When I got sick I lost a lot of my eye-hand coordination... I can play rhythm guitar alright, but finger picking is tougher, and chicken pickin' is still out of the question, but ever working at getting it back...
(Guitar, bass guitar, 12 string guitar, and banjo. fair on a dobro or a steel)

There's a lot here that's impressive, but I am fascinated by (and a little jealous of) people who can yodel. Do you think it's a natural gift, or can people be taught?
Also, re the stringed instruments you play... can you read music, or do you play by ear?
Having a hard time sleeping tonight because LAST NIGHT I tripped over uneven concrete in my driveway and took a hard splat. Tonight I'm really feeling it. I'm ready to take something for pain and try again to get some sleep. Who knew I'd still be hurting like this since my fall was LAST NIGHT?

Aw, anyone can do it... It was how folks hollered to each other back in the day. That's what folks do wrong, trying. Too timid. At least when starting, you've got to mean it - Belt it out. Kinda like gulping water backwards... without the vomit. :laugh: Really have to open the throat.
Nope. Can't read a lick. :shrug:
Just picked up a guitar one day and never put it down. Learned pickin on Wildwood Flower... My folks still can't stand that song, I'll tell you what... Picked up the rest as I went along, and went semi-pro... played bars and honkytonks for a while, and was in the house band for a small recording studio...
I'm cheating here, but this certainly sounds like some Jazz/Blues from the 40s/50s, to me anyway.

Hmmm... You play guitar (12-string included) and other stringed instruments. You don't read music, rather have a natural ability to learn on your own. You've done session work. You can yodel. You like country and numerous genres of music. I'm starting to wonder if Glen Campbell's Alzheimer's diagnosis and death was a hoax.
Both of those are on a tape I made for my wife when we were dating...

@Sighlass
Fun stuff! I'd never heard this side of them. I've got some errands to run today, but I can see I'll be drawn back to the computer later and find myself blissfully lost in some rabbit trails of discovery and entertainment. In the meantime, here's another live performance I got a kick out of from the 70s. Enjoy!

Dude! No wonder she married you. :thumbsup:
@roamer_1
Nice video. I was digging on it until 3:27 when the lyrics went tilt. I couldn't actually understand her lyrics, but I do know it wasn't "my beard a roughening coal pile." Being a lyric freak is hard. 88kleenix
@AllThatJazzZ
Yeah I know... As it turns out, there is an alt lyric that is often offered for the song:
"My beard a rustlin cold towel"
@AllThatJazzZ
I still like the cover - and I rarely like covers... Maybe it's just the banjo :laugh:
Glen Campbell is my absolute favorite entertainer, and there are a few instances on some of my favorite videos where he gets the lyrics wrong. In almost every case, it lessens my enjoyment of the song. A couple of them are accidental, and people wouldn't ever know if they weren't lyric nuts. A couple of them are deliberate. He decided to update "She's Gone, Gone, Gone" by changing "train" to "plane." It doesn't work for me.
This is my favorite version of "Southern Nights." I have to hear it at least once a week.

You're welcome ... I could live a week on a good thanks.I have to work tonight, but will unzip them and listen when I get off work.
Listening to them as I type, that transfusion song (driving too fast and stupid) is right up my kid's alley for a learning lesson on not driving like there is no tomorrow.

@pookie18
I never realized that someone recorded this song before Sunny and the Sunglows/Sunliners. I like this version! Thanks for posting.
@pookie18
I'm going to text this version out next Christmas. It's so cute and musically entertaining, you can't take your eyes off of it.
In observance of the anniversary his passing, here's some of Glen Campbell's early work from the doo-wop era before he hit the big time.

Time to get a newer cell phone. One that has Bluetooth.
It would come in handy if you wanted to listen to music while being mobile.

@pookie18 for some music perhaps he doesn't have...
I think this music is 50s and 60s stuff so forgive if I have it in wrong category. I looked up one song and it said 1960... so may be both eras.

Great stuff... but only 3 days download time frame... get it gang, while you can.
Another item that might interest a few folks... It was a "HISTORY of Country Music" 6 LP collection... and it gave a brief background of each song... which I found sorta annoying yet informative. Some of these songs go way back to the 20s and later...
For example the series starts off with a 1927 yodeling country song "T for Texas"...
Anyhoo, Country is not my fortay... so I will let yall sort it out...
This is ONE huge download at nearly 2/3rds a gig in size (and each Mp3 song is in top quality @320kbps)

But I ain't a Hank Williams fan, never will be.
@Sighlass
That's okay. I love his music enough for two people, so it comes out even. wink777
Here's my favorite performance of Hank's "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry." No one else has delivered the lyric with such abject heartbreak -- not even Glen in his other performances of the same song.

Yeah, I see why, much more emotion in his voice... Great song... I remember my mother singing this song.
I think @sneakypete songs were from the 70s (1974 I think wiki said) ... but it is all good. Kinda a Charlie Daniels sound or Hank Jr.

@Sighlass
Here is a song by Link Wray from 1958 that was actually banned from air play because it was thought to "incite violence". Not a single word spoken or sung in it,it is,AFAIK,the ONLY instrumental song to ever be banned from playing on the air.
Everly Brothers... late 50s songs mostly from their first album. Lots of them were hits.

Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs - Stay
Dang Pete, song was just a minute and half long... Dang, they could fill some radio gaps with that short a play time. Great song, thanks for sharing.
Like the live version better, more of that high notes.

In that era songs were typically short--not that short. 2-2.5 minutes.
Generally not much longer, until FM in the 70s.
