Sen. Doug Jones says he wants to hear closing arguments, and he's still undecided on the final vote in the impeachment trial.

"I'm getting there," he said. "I really do want to hear the arguments and some conversations from colleagues."

With any luck at all.

Also,it drives me absolutely NUTS that the RNC avoids mentioning this like it is toxic.

I just heard Michael Goodwin talking with Mark Simon, he called impeachment the “Ukraine piffle.” Excellent.

He said in 2016 the democrats became the party of ‘deniers’. They broke with America’s tradition and history in politics, of parties accepting the loss of an election. He called this sudden break from norm, dangerous.

The last democrat loser before Hillary was Al Gore and he conceded—after court challenges—and accepted his loss. In his concession speech he acknowledged the president-elect’s victory and that it was the people’s decision.

Conversely, Hillary reluctantly conceded but continued to publicly deny Trump’s legitimacy as president. For the first time in American history democrat “leaders” have opened the door to rejecting the results of an election. Look at the poisonous atmosphere it unleashed in America’s political and social fabric.

It’s disgraceful what democrats have done in order to keep power while openly trying to deny it to voters.

One of MY favorite moments was when Corey Booker was giving testimony about how LTC Alexander Vitman was a "VN war hero that was awarded the Air Medal for bravery in combat". I personally know SF NCO's that were awarded Air Medals, and they got them because they kept logs of all their air time flying around in VN. When you put in enough hours, regardless of if you are flying into combat or on a R&R flight to Saigon, you get an Air Medal. I probably had enough hours to have gotten one if I had ever bothered to keep a log. Mostly people want them because they might give you an edge over someone who doesn't have one with a promotion board.

To get one for COURAGE (the "v device" attached to the ribbon or medal) you had to have been a pilot, copilot,or crewmember that exhibited courage while under enemy fire. I never personally saw one of those, and I suspect they are VERY rare because why not just give them something like a Bronze Star or Army Commendation Medal with the V-device and be done with it? I am GUESSING the Air Medal with the V-device is VERY rare except for pilots of fighter-bombers.

The FACT is that Vitman did not earn ONE SINGLE valor award during his entire career. He got his Purple Heart while riding as a passenger in a truck convoy and got struck with shrapnel when the truck ran over a mine.

He got his Combat Infantryman's Badge from being a career infantry officer who didn't have one but DID have political connections, and getting the PH due to the roadside bomb wound. He was NOT in combat except for in the most technical sense of the word.

WH counsel Mark Purpura is summarizing the case on those “undisputed” facts. The details are rather complicated, but he is making an effective case that there are certainly enough exculpatory facts to cause any reasonable Senator to decline to vote for removal.

@Bigun

They really didn't mean much if you had an infantry MOS unless you were going before a promotion board for E-7 or higher rank,or were an officer. Even little doo-dahs like Good Conduct Medals and campaign ribbons helped more if you had some sort of "ground pounder" MOS. Let's face it,for promotions to E-6 or below the promotions were handled by local commanders who knew you personally, and stuff like Air Medals didn't mean diddly-squat to them. If they wanted to give you a Bronze Star or lesser award, they gave it to you. It got "stickier" when you were put in for a Silver Star or higher award because it would be getting looked over by Corps or/and higher commanders, and for all these people knew you could be your CO's nephew. They wanted more that the recommendation of a single proposed award, they wanted to look at your award history. LOTS of people who never heard a single shot fired in combat earned multiple Air Medals from doing stuff like flying mail flights daily. The mail helicopters I saw didn't even have door guns mounted on them, never mind rocket pods on the skids. Hell, they had doors to keep the mail dry when it was raining.

BTW,I am not ridiculing those whose duty was pulling "gravy jobs" like flying mail. I once hitchhiked a ride on a mail chopper to visit a friend while on stand-down,and damned if the mail chopper I rode in on get shot down while flying away from the airstrip. I watched it crash and burn.  Those guys were just as dead as any other KIA.

They were also pretty much sitting ducks. I asked around and found out they flew in and out of that camp every day at the same time, with no escort gun ships, and no machine guns or rocket launchers. Other than the pistols carried by the pilot and copilot, they were unarmed and couldn't shoot back even if they had the chance.

Low-hanging fruit ALWAYS gets picked sooner or later. I sincerely hope the officer in charge of their flight schedule got hammered over this.

One of my basic training buddies (Terry L. Davis of Granite City Illinois) took the Army up on their offer to send him to OCS and eventually to Ft. Rucker where he became a chopper pilot.  I ran into him a few years later at Ft. Hood Texas. He had been there three months when he was ordered back to RVN.  The unwritten rule back then was that pilots who had completed previous tours flying combat support missions got the first choice of duty in succeeding tours.  Terry was less than three months into his second tour when a SAM got him. He was flying mail and other support missions at the time.

@Bigun

Yup! That's why they call it a combat zone. Anything can happen to anyone at any time. Still, any senior officer that schedules unarmed support flights into remote camps on a regular basis on things like mail runs should be court-martialed for dereliction of duty. The smart thing that should have been done was to have the mail slick come in on the tail of the assault helicopters and the Cobras, drop off the mail and any passengers, and then take off from home when the armed choppers are taking off. There were VERY few VC bold enough to sit out in a rice paddy and take a shot at a Cobra flying overhead, and that was a diminishing number every day.

Sending in unarmed flights on a schedule is nothing less than scheduling them to be shot down.

Generally speaking, that is not the kiss of death it used to be. Especially not for someone his age. The treatments for most forms of cancer today are MUCH advanced over what they used to be,and if they catch it in time, they can usually take care of it. Gone are the days of "hammer them with chemo and radiation until they have nothing left to throw up,and are glowing in the dark as they try to puke. Sometimes the treatment seemed to be more destructive than the disease.

The treatments today are VERY specialized towards the specific form of cancer, how developed it is,and the other physical ailments of the patient.

And since Rush is famous and has cubic money, you can be sure he is going to get the best treatment possible.

Cobras hadn't come on the line yet when my friend died.  I guess we can say that he was part of the learning experience.

We need to take this off of this thread @sneakypete

How long will the camera and the mike remain operational?

Democratic Impeachment Manager Jason Crow Quotes Harry Potter On Senate Floor

“It’s in that spirit that hanging in my son’s room is a quote from Harry Potter,” Crow said on the floor of the U.S. Senate. “The quote is from Professor Dumbledore who said ‘it is our choices who show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.'”

I still get misty eyes when I think about the passing of Ronald Wilson Reagan. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.

The House Managers in their closing argument persist in their deliberate lies, claiming again that I argued that a president can do anything — even commit crimes— if he believes his election is in the public interest. That is a willful lie, as watching my answer will prove. (MTC)

I did tune in for a while today. Sekolow was speaking and showing sound clips of the Dems saying they would impeach...long before any accused transgression .  That should have been shown from the beginning of this travesty...over and over and over.

Manchin was just reelected in 2018 so he's in the Senate for another four years.  @skeeter

But if he was/is at all serious about leaving the senate early and running for governor, if he doesn't vote to acquit ... he can kiss this dream goodbye.

Oh the rodent will vote to acquit, just like Mitt will.

What I resent is him lending credibility to the sham impeachment as he tries to have it both ways. Contrary to the reason he gives for leaning towards acquittal, his casting doubt on the president’s motive is actually very destructive to national cohesion.

Susan Collins will vote to acquit....

Collins will vote to acquit Trump
By Jordain Carney - 02/04/20 04:19 PM EST

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) announced on Tuesday that she will vote to acquit President Trump on the two House-passed articles of impeachment.

"I do not believe that the House has met its burden of showing that the president's conduct, however flawed, warrants the extreme step of immediate removal from office," Collins said from the Senate floor.

Collins, while saying she would vote to acquit, called Trump's actions "improper" and said they "demonstrated very poor judgement." She added that there was "conflicting evidence" about why Trump asked Ukraine President Zelensky to help "look into" former Vice President Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

"It was wrong for President Trump to mention former Vice President Biden on that phone call," Collins said.

My hope would be that Collins would go to Romney, patiently try to make him understand that she's putting her job on the line for the sake of party unity, and his grandstanding is disrespectful to her. If Romney has a shred of decency left he'll do the right thing. But I'm not holding my breath.
