We're excited to announce that Lockhart State Park is the official home of the State Jackalope Herd. After decades of careful conservation, we're ready to share these symbols of Texas heritage with the public.

These iconic creatures have been carefully preserved, with genetic links identical to the jackalope first encountered by early settlers. Historic Lockhart State Park was chosen to serve as the initial home for the herd due to its ideal ecosystem and proximity to biologists in Austin.

Eventually, the agency hopes to expand the project, by placing additional stock in other parks around the state. The Jackalope Herd joins the list of other state herds managed by Texas State Parks, including the State Bison Herd and State Longhorn Herd.

What a beautiful sight!  We used to play with them as kids.  You'd sure have to be careful of the horns though....deadly!

LOL

Brilliant

Lockhart, huh?

Better be careful.

Them Jackalopes could wind up on the menu of Smitty', Kruez's, or Black's.

The real jackalopes, came from Wyoming, up in the Biig Horn Mountains.

There is also a herd off wild mustang horses there, and fossills.

During the 1890s cowboys took a few jackalopes to Texas, to see how they would do down there.

Obviously they did good. One of the cowboys was my grandfather, who took on the nickname of "Tex" after the jackalope caper.

We had a Wyoming jackalope, stuffed and munted on the wall when I was a kid.

I hear they're all but extinct in Wyoming now.
