Roger Corman Passes Away at 98

https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/5/11/roger-corman-passes-away-at-98

Quote
B-movie king Roger Corman, who directed and produced hundreds of low-budget films, has passed away. He was 98. Corman’s imprint on movies is undeniable. The definitive trailblazer and pioneer of independent film, his impact unparalleled, and legacy forever enduring.

Though he began his career as a screenwriter and director (watch his 1962 gem “The Intruder”), it was as a producer that Corman made his biggest impact. Some of the talent discovered by him include Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, Peter Fonda, and Sandra Bullock, just to name a few.

It all started for Corman in 1949. After serving in the Navy, he landed a job at 20th Century Fox and by 1949 was a story analyst at the studio. Four years later, in 1953, he sold his first screenplay, “Highway Dragnet” and served as associate producer on the film. He used the money he made on that film – $18,000 – and produced “The Monster from the Ocean Floor.” This ability to make movies on very small budgets became the blueprint for Corman’s career.

Graduating students donned handcuffs, displayed Palestinian flags and tore up diplomas during a graduation ceremony at embattled Columbia University.

Friday's commencement came on the heels of weeks of clashes between pro-Palestine protestors, administrators and law enforcement.

Despite the controversy, some students maintained the fighting spirit. One social work graduate crossed the stage with hands zip-tied above her head as cheers sounded from the audience.

Trump accuses trial judge of being 'corrupt' and 'conflicted' on his way out of court
By Post Staff

Trump again ripped Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan as "corrupt" on his way out of court.

He called Merchan, who was first appointed to the bench in Bronx family court in 2006 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, then a Republican, of being "highly conflicted."

Merchan became an acting justice in Manhattan Supreme Court, presiding over felony criminal cases, in 2009.

Trump also reiterated his claim that "there's no problem here" and "no crime" in the case.

"It's really a sad day for the country. It's sad for New York," he told reporters.

Why this is news?

Why? Because some people are historically ignorant and compound that ignorance with a penchant for conspiracy theories.

Of course, the government has contingency plans to stay functional in the event of a catastrophic event in Washington, DC.  As anyone who is not historically ignorant knows, it has since the start of the Cold War.  This includes having one person in the line of presidential succession, that year's "designated survivor" be hidden away in a secure facility when the State of the Union address gathers all the others in the Capitol with both houses of Congress.

Shocking footage captured the moment a boatload of migrants rushed a busy California beach as stunned locals watched on.

In a viral video shared to X, crowds gathered on Ocean Beach in San Diego as around a dozen migrants departed a valuable-looking white yacht, without any Coast Guard officials in sight.

The migrants were seen hopping into the water before sprinting towards a residential neighborhood, while beachgoers stopped to film them on their phones.

Here's how Trump's business reimbursed Cohen for the hush money payout, per trial evidence
By Ben Kochman

Then-Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg wrote down notes explaining the scheme to reimburse Michael Cohen for his $130,000 payout to Stormy Daniels, trial evidence shows.

Weisselberg scrawled messy notes explaining the scheme on a copy of a bank statement for Cohen's shell company that was used to make the Daniels payout, Essential Consultants LLC.

Here's how it worked:

-- They started with a $130,000 payment to reimburse Cohen for paying the Daniels hush money.

-- They then added $50,000 owed to Cohen to reimburse him for paying an IT firm called "Red Finch," which Cohen testified he hired to rig online polls in favor of Trump in 2015.

-- Then they doubled $180,000 to $360,000 to make up for the roughly 50% taxes the Midtown Manhattan resident would have to pay because he was in a high tax bracket.

-- They then added an extra $60,000 as a "bonus" to make up for Trump apparently stiffing Cohen on a bonus the previous year.

-- Weisselberg told Cohen that the new total of $420,000 would be paid out in 12 installments of $35,000 throughout 2017.
