Space / NASA Hubble Space Telescope Suspends Science Due To Glitch
« Last post by Elderberry on Today at 11:33:59 am »
Forbes by Amanda Kooser 4/26/2024

It’s not easy being a 34-year-old space telescope. NASA is troubleshooting an issue with the elderly Hubble Space Telescope that has put a pause on science operations. The space agency described the glitch as an “ongoing gyroscope (gyro) issue” in a statement on Friday.

The telescope went into safe mode on April 23. Safe mode is a protective mode that Hubble enters when it encounters a technical problem. It gives NASA a chance to diagnose and work on the glitch, but it also means Hubble isn’t sending back any new science data. There is some good news, though. “Hubble’s instruments are stable, and the telescope is in good health,” the agency said.

The gyros help Hubble point in the right direction. Three of Hubble’s six gyroscopes are operational, but one of those three gave faulty readings that triggered the safe mode. The same gyro previously sent the telescope into safe mode in November, so it’s a lingering problem. “The team is currently working to identify potential solutions,” NASA said. “If necessary, the spacecraft can be re-configured to operate with only one gyro, with the other remaining gyro placed in reserve.”

Biden’s America: Ecuadoran Man Allowed to Visit U.S. Despite Being Wanted for Rape

JOHN BINDER24 Apr 202436

An Ecuadoran national was allowed to visit the United States on a visa despite being wanted for rape in his native country, federal officials reveal.

The 30-year-old man from Ecuador entered the U.S. on Aug. 31, 2022, in Miami, Florida, on a visa that allowed him to stay until Sept. 13, 2022. Instead of departing the U.S. per the terms of his visa, the man did not leave as hundreds of thousands do annually.

Though President Joe Biden’s agencies allowed him to enter the U.S. on a visa, the man had been wanted since Feb. 2, 2022, for allegedly raping a woman in Ecuador.

“This Ecuadoran noncitizen is wanted for sexually assaulting a woman in his home country,” an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official Todd Lyons said in a statement. “Every minute he was walking free represented a threat to the residents of our communities.”

Sometime after overstaying his visa, ICE’s National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center confirmed that the man was residing in the sanctuary state of Massachusetts despite his being wanted for rape.

These States Are Making It Illegal For Illegal Immigrants To Enter

BY TYLER DURDEN
FRIDAY, APR 26, 2024 - 12:45 PM

Authored by Darlene McCormick Sanchez via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

Conservative states across the country—Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, and Oklahoma—are taking border security matters into their own hands, proposing or passing legislation targeting illegal immigration.

The Oklahoma legislature just passed a bill designed to prohibit illegal immigrants from entering or living in the state.

HB 4156 states: “A person commits an impermissible occupation if the person is an alien and willfully and without permission enters and remains in the State of Oklahoma without having first obtained legal authorization to enter the United States.”

The bill passed the state House and Senate by wide margins and Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, is expected to sign it into law.

The legislature declared the issue a crisis in the state and stated in the bill: “Throughout the state, law enforcement comes into daily and increasingly frequent contact with foreign nationals who entered the country illegally or who remain here illegally.

Net Zero Watch brands new windfarm subsidy ‘obscene’

The logic of floating wind farms is that they can operate in much deeper waters, thus accessing stronger winds. The corollary is therefore that they should provide cheaper power.

Net Zero Watch brands new windfarm subsidy ‘obscene’
Green Volt project could be handed annual half billion pound subsidy

Net Zero Watch has revealed the astonishing scale of subsidies likely to be received by a windfarm planned for Scottish waters. The Green Volt floating offshore windfarm could hand its backers around £500 million pounds per year in subsidies. The project received official approval from Marine Scotland last week.

Because it is a floating windfarm, it is eligible for a much higher level of subsidies than fixed-bottom or onshore windfarms. At the launch of the most recent subsidy auction, the Government announced that it had raised the maximum price for floating windfarms to around £240 per megawatt hour [1], around four times current market prices. If the whole windfarm is subsidised at this level, consumers will probably have to pay more than £500 million per year in subsidy [2].

A very telling pair of graphs from Ole Humlum’s Climate4You:

We can debate the reasons for less cloud cover, but generally speaking less cloud/more sunshine leads to higher temperatures. (Certain high level clouds may have the reverse effect, but this is small).

Even the Met Office admitted this a few years ago, in a study they have since buried.

In particular, it is the sun that predominantly heats the oceans. The equilibrium effect on the seas from a slightly warmer atmosphere are so small as to be unmeasurable.

In alarmist world, of course, CO2 is the only driver of global temperatures, so don’t expect them to mention that cloud cover has been a major factor behind global warming in recent decades.

Wash Post Editorial Board follows orders of megalomaniac billionaires: ‘Humans might need to re-engineer the climate’ – Tout injecting ‘100,000 tons of sulfur per year into lower stratosphere to block solar rays’

Washington Post Editorial Board: ‘Humans might need to re-engineer the climate’ –

“A conversation about the risks and potential benefits of re-engineering the climate is urgently needed.” … “Climate engineering scholars David Keith at the University of Chicago and Wake Smith at Yale think it would take no more than 15 souped-up Gulfstream jets to send up, say, 100,000 tons of sulfur per year into the lower stratosphere to block solar rays, at an annual cost of some $500 million. This could happen in as little as five years.”

Delft engineer about electric car: 'cracked together blunt technology'

From one of our correspondents.

The Delft mechanical engineer and sustainability advisor Ir. Chris Zijdeveld is very critical of the current introduction of the electric car in the Netherlands. He thinks that the current fleet is not suitable for achieving energy savings. Unwise choices are made.

Zijdeveld on NPO radio1:

'What is happening now is that we are applying 'highly material' technology. We put a few hundred kilos of batteries in a car, we make cars that weigh three tons to move people weighing only 80 kilos. That's not the kind of technique I learned as a mechanic in Delft. The first cars were a carriage with an engine, the current electric car is an imitation of the car with a combustion engine, much too big, much too heavy. You have to use an electric car that has been developed as an electric car.'

'We have become victims of sloganology…'
Policy circles in The Hague are also looking with care at the future of the electric car in the Netherlands, especially when it comes to affordability. Gerben Jan Gerbrandy, chairman of the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda:
