Newark, New Jersey (CNN)The jury in the trial of New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez said Thursday it is deadlocked on all charges.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell has requested the judge formally declare a mistrial.
The seven-woman, five-man jury initially told Judge William Walls it was deadlocked Monday after several hours of deliberations. The note Thursday says they have reviewed all the evidence "slowly," in great detail and are not willing to change their positions.
Prosecutor Peter Koski says it's not "unusual" for juries to eventually reach agreement. He wants the court to read another model jury instruction on partial verdicts.
Walls is continuing to hear suggestions from lawyers about what to do next.
Menendez faces charges of conspiracy, bribery, and honest services fraud related to abusing the power of his office that could carry decades in prison. Prosecutors say the senator accepted more than $600,000 in political contributions, a luxurious hotel suite at the Park Hyatt in Paris, and free rides on a private jet from a wealthy ophthalmologist, Dr. Salomon Melgen, in exchange for political favors.
Both men deny all charges.
The trial, now in its eleventh week, involved 57 witnesses and hundreds of exhibits.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

You got GOP Senators showing up to defend Bob and we're surprised at a deadlock?
-
Looks like we got a mistrial, folks.
:facepalm2:
-
With one of the jurors asking what a Senator was, not surprised.

It appears he was judged by a jury of his peers.
-
I wonder how much that cost him.
-
It's official. Hung jury.
Mistrial.
@mystery-ak and/or mods headline needs to be changed
Thank you

@WineNot
Are you saying he's hung? If so how do you know?
-
Of course he'll never resign, Democrats never resign.
-
I said he wouldn't be found guilty, the top of the Democratic party do not like Menendez because of his foreign policy views but I don't like Menendez because of his views on some other issues as well.

I dont like him because he's a corrupt bastard.
-
I hope they re-try.... :0001:
-
I heard his post-trial statement, he blamed the government for trying to go after him.
-
Reports are that the jury was stuck at 10 not guilty and 2 guilty. I think a hung jury was inevitable, and I doubt a retrial will result in a guilty verdict. I think he's guilty as heck, but I think proving corrupt intent involving someone with whom he has had a 25 year relationship is a pretty steep hill.

Obama set out to punish Menendez over Cuba and Iran
November 17, 2017 by Silvio Canto Jr.
But as Andrew McCarthy, in an exceptionally astute analysis, points out, the telling point here is in the original reason for the charges at all: Menendez angered President Obama, and Obama, banana-republic style, went after him through the Justice Department as payback.
Policy-wise, Menendez wasn’t that bad as Democrats go. He was against Obama’s Iran deal, something cooked up by Ben Rhodes and shoved down our throats with admitted lies to ensure that Obama left with some sort of legacy, even as the whole thing meant selling America down the river. The deal’s secret flights loaded with billions in cash, drug-dealer-style, for the mullahs’ benefit, have only served to embolden the Iranians as the cash has since made its way to arms and mayhem.
Menendez also opposed Obama’s sellout to Cuba, forking over good relations with the Castro brothers in late 2014 in exchange for nothing. Since then, horrible repressive measures have been taken against dissidents, something Obama and the ever garrulous Rhodes have been silent about.”
I'm going to agree with these articles, I think they were out for Menendez; guy doesn't talk like a crook. Okay, he's a democrat, that's a strike against him. But on foreign policy, I repeat myself, actually pretty good. He doesn't walk like a duck.
But whether just disagreeing with the Prez (Obama) was enough to set this in motion? Maybe someone will write a book about it. Senators often disagree with a sitting president of the same party, Sasse-Trump and so on and so on.
Menendez is a liberal dem on domestic issues, just like the rest of them... from what I know.
