Astronaut Scott Kelly apologizes after quoting, praising Winston Churchill
by Daniel Chaitin
| October 07, 2018 08:28 PM
Scott Kelly, a retired American astronaut with multiple space flights under his belt, apologized Sunday after quoting Winston Churchill and calling the 20th century British prime minister "one of the greatest leaders of modern times."
"Did not mean to offend by quoting Churchill. My apologies. I will go and educate myself further on his atrocities, racist views which I do not support. My point was we need to come together as one nation. We are all Americans. That should transcend partisan politics," Kelly wrote on Twitter in the evening.

Please don’t apologize. Winston Churchill, like all of us, had serious human failings. But unlike most of us—he possessed genuine greatness. And that greatness may have saved freedom & democracy. Ask the Twitter scolds to name a hero or heroine who didn’t have serious flaws.

The poor fella is taking the perennially offended morons seriously. Big mistake but understandable for someone who came of age before the era of mass leftist derangement.
-
The funny thing is that he meant the Churchill quote to criticize anyone who might be celebrating the Kavanaugh confirmation - that is, the right.
But the people on whose side he is - the left - are the ones jumping on him for quoting that awful old imperialist racist. Sometimes you just can't win, eh, Astronaut Kelly?

Winston Churchill did not commit "atrocities" nor was he a racist. Those are lies, as told by those for whom untruths are both useful and depressingly common.
Churchill was among the greatest and irreplaceable men of the 20th Century, without whom the entirety of Western civilization would have far more likely been overrun and destroyed.
And that is why the Left despises him. He saved Britain, and was instrumental in liberating Europe. He enthusiastically embraced and celebrated Western culture and society.
As for Churchill's defense of the British Empire: was the world freer and better off when it was strong or when it is, as now, a distant memory?

That's not party approved group-think speech, Scott. You better watch it. You're officially on report!

Instead of “please don’t apologize†he needs to be told he’s a coward.

Astronaut Scott Kelly attacked for quoting Winston Churchill
One of the unwritten rules of social media is avoid inspirational quotes.
American astronaut Scott Kelly put that to the test on Sunday when his use of Winston Churchill quotes landed him in hot water with people who oppose the wartime British prime minister's views on empire and race.
But when Kelly tried to apologise for the tweet and offered to educate himself, Churchill fans attacked him for discrediting the politician's record.
Kelly, whose sister-in-law is former Democrat Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, used a famous remark by Churchill to comment on deep divisions in American politics.

Oh good grief.
I have a great admiration for Churchill. I know he had his faults, but jeepers. For almost two years, he singlehandedly held back the spread of Nazi Germany until the United States came to help and the USSR forcibly changed their opinion of Hitler.
