Six years after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s virtue signalling led to a massive increase in asylum seekers illegally crossing into Canada from the United States at Roxham Rd., near Montreal, Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden claim they’ve fixed the problem.

They announced on Friday that, as of Sunday, asylum claimants crossing the border at Roxham Rd. will no longer be escorted into Canada to make a refugee claim — which can take years to process — as opposed to claimants attempting to enter Canada at official land border crossings, where they are automatically turned back.

As part of the deal, Canada will accept an additional 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere over the next year.

After dithering on the issue since 2017, Canada and the U.S. agreed to apply the 2004 Safe Third Country Agreement across the entire 8,891-kilometre border between the two countries, requiring claimants to apply for refugee status in the first “safe” country they reach — Canada or the U.S.

This "symbolic" gesture is sure to discourage human smuggling from Canada. :bolt:
