Nightmare in Niger — Exclusive: Biden Administration Leaves Hundreds of U.S. Troops ‘Hostage’ in Niger

Kristina Wong 18 Apr 2024

More than 1,000 U.S. troops are effectively being held “hostage” in Niger with medical supplies running low — stuck between the military junta-controlled government’s demands for them to leave and the Biden administration’s refusal to let them go home after the end of their deployments, according to a report prepared by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and obtained exclusively by Breitbart News.

“They are, in effect, hostages of an indecisive Commander-in-Chief,” the report says.

In addition, the report accuses Biden administration officials of trying to cover up the situation to lawmakers, as well as to troops deployed there and their families anxiously awaiting their return.

“Our troops are currently sitting on a powder keg caused by political indecision at the top of the Department of State and Department of Defense. With a military junta in charge — who detests our presence and considers us unserious and predatory — the situation seems to be setting the groundwork for catastrophic diplomatic collapse like we saw during the 2012 Benghazi attack. Additionally, these troops are already running short on necessary, life-saving supplies, such as blood and medications,” the report by Gaetz’s office said.

Gaetz, during a recent congressional hearing, slammed the Biden administration for trying to cover up the deteriorating situation.

Rep. Matt Gaetz
@RepMattGaetz
BREAKING - STATE DEPT COVERUP IN NIGER: A senior enlisted whistleblower stationed in Niger has EXPOSED a coverup by the State Department! He is sounding the alarm over the imminent danger our troops are facing as a result of the Biden administration’s suppression of intelligence.

Our troops in Niger have been pleading for help. They’ve sent intel reports stating that they rarely get safe water. There are no diplomatic overflights to receive medicine, fresh troop rotations, or even basic supplies.

The current government of Niger has called the U.S. presence in the country “illegal.” The deteriorating conditions may lead to another Benghazi-style attack.

Today I’m releasing “Unwelcome in Niger: An Interim Report by Congressman Matt Gaetz on the American Troop Crisis in Niger.” You’ll learn of the victims of this cover up: the 1,100 U.S. Troops who are currently stationed in Niger, functionally stranded by a Biden Administration which cares more about saving face than saving their lives.

The US attempts a new military deal with Niger in a last ditch effort to stay

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The United States is attempting to create a new military agreement with Niger that would allow it to remain in the country, weeks after the junta said its presence was no longer justified, two Western officials told The Associated Press Friday.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said Washington was actively working on options for a revised deal aimed at retaining its foothold in the West African nation.

Niger plays a central role in the U.S. military’s operations in Africa’s Sahel region, Washington is concerned about the spread of jihadist violence where local groups have pledged allegiance to al-Qaida and the Islamic State groups. Niger is home to a major U.S. airbase, in the city of Agadez, some 920 kilometers (550 miles) from the capital Niamey, using it for manned and unmanned surveillance flights and other operations. The U.S. has also invested hundreds of millions of dollars in training Niger’s military since it began operations there in 2013.

But relations have frayed between Niger and Western countries since mutinous soldiers ousted the country’s democratically elected president in July. Niger’s junta has since told French forces to leave and turned instead to Russia for security. Earlier this month, Russian military trainers arrived to reinforce the country’s air defenses and with Russian equipment to train Nigeriens to use.  ...

My understanding is the Government of Niger doesn't want our people there, so why are we keeping any troops there against the will of the host country?  They should have been bugged out the instant we were asked to leave.  Otherwise, we are an occupying force.`

Russian military trainers arrive in Niger as African country pulls away from US

Fri 12 Apr 2024  |  16.05 EDT

Russian military trainers have arrived to reinforce Niger’s air defenses as the west African country pulls away from close cooperation with the US in counterterrorism efforts, turning instead to Moscow for help as it fights Islamist insurgents.

State television in the country broadcast footage of Russian military trainers arriving in the country aboard a plane equipped with military supplies late on Thursday. Two Russian trainers were filmed in front of the plane wearing military uniforms, caps and face coverings.

“We are here to train the Nigerien army to use the military equipment that is here,” one of the Russian trainers said in the broadcast, speaking in French. “We are here to develop military cooperation between Russia and Niger.”

The arrival of Russian forces makes it complicated for the US forces, along with diplomatic and civilian personnel, to remain in the country and throws into doubt the future of joint Niger-US counterinsurgency operations.  .  .  .

U.S. Military Begins Plans To Withdraw Troops From Niger
.By Jack Thompson & Sam Mednick

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The United States will begin plans to withdraw troops from Niger, U.S. officials said Saturday, in what experts say is a blow to Washington and its allies in the region in terms of staging security operations in the Sahel. The planned departure comes as U.S. officials said they were trying to find a new military agreement.

The prime minister of Niger, appointed by the ruling military junta, Ali Lamine Zeine, and U.S. deputy secretary of state Kurt Campbell, agreed on Friday that the two nations would begin to plan the withdrawal of American troops, the U.S. State Department told The Associated Press in an email Saturday.

A U.S. official said there was no timeline for withdrawal besides talks set to start in the coming days about next steps. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to detail the private diplomatic discussions. An American delegation to coordinate the details of the withdrawal process will be dispatched soon.

We should destroy the base, or at the least plant charges in areas where munitions would be stored, etc. so if it was ever used against Americans we could make it disappear. U.S. hands over $110m base to Niger junta to release 1,000 U.S. Army hostages, watches helplessly as base goes to Russia
By Monica Showalter

Joe Biden is a lucky bungler.

With no Fox News cameras around and nobody paying much attention to what was going on in Niger, a disgraceful, utterly humiliating exit of the U.S. military from that benighted country now led by a military junta, has dealt the U.S. another strategic blow, and entirely preventably. The crummy little tinpot junta now running Niger has managed to kick Uncle Sam around, much as the Taliban and Iran did, creating an accumulating pattern of lost U.S. influence. And sure enough, they got us good, because Joe Biden let them.

According to the New York Times:

More than 1,000 American military personnel will leave Niger in the coming months, Biden administration officials said on Friday, upending U.S. counterterrorism and security policy in the tumultuous Sahel region of Africa.

In the second of two meetings this week in Washington, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell told Niger’s prime minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, that the United States disagreed with the country’s turn toward Russia for security and Iran for a possible deal on its uranium reserves, and the failure of Niger’s military government to map out a path to return to democracy, according to a senior State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss diplomatic talks.

The decision was not a particular surprise. Niger said last month that it was revoking its military cooperation deal with the United States following a highly contentious set of meetings in Niger’s capital, Niamey, with a high-level American diplomatic and military delegation.

The base was a critical node in the U.S. war on al-Qaida, ISIS, and all their evil little allies operating terrorist operations from the northern African region. Niger had been the U.S.'s bigfoot footprint in that region and its value was incalculable.

With that the baseline reality, some of the self-righteous karens at the State Department decided that now was just the time to lecture and hector Niger's mirrored-sunglass coup leaders about 'democracy,' as if that place ever had any idea about the concept.

The coup leaders didn't take it well, and ordered the U.S. out. To make matters worse, they held 1,000 U.S. servicemen hostage in the desert without water or food for weeks, as the U.S. attempted to hold on, until this past week when the U.S. agreed to fork over the brand-new state-of-art U.S. $110 million military base there just so we could get our service
members out. And to make it worse, they decided to hand it over to Russia.

Exclusive: Russian troops enter base housing US military in Niger, US official says
By Phil Stewart and Idrees Ali

WASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) (https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/russian-troops-enter-base-housing-us-military-niger-us-official-says-2024-05-02/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=twitter) - Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger's junta to expel U.S. forces from the country.

The military officers ruling the West African nation have told the U.S. to withdraw its nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country, which until a coup last year had been a key partner for Washington's fight against insurgents who have killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.

A senior U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russian forces were not mingling with U.S. troops but were using a separate hanger at Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger's capital. ...

The U.S. and its allies have been forced to move troops out of a number of African countries following coups that brought to power groups eager to distance themselves from Western governments. In addition to the impending departure from Niger, U.S. troops have also left Chad in recent days, while French forces have been kicked out of Mali and Burkina Faso.  ...

The U.S. official said Nigerien authorities had told President Joe Biden's administration that about 60 Russian military personnel would be in Niger, but the official could not verify that number.  ...

Unprecedented Proximity: Russian Troops Gain Access to US Military Base in Niger
Story by Isaac Jones • 7h •

As the sun beat down on the dusty hangars of Airbase 101 in Niger, a curious and potentially incendiary new chapter in global geopolitics unfurled. Russian military personnel have entered an air base that hosts U.S. troops in Niger’s capital, Niamey, marking a notable shift in the nation’s allegiance and the balance of international influence in West Africa.

This development follows a decision by Niger’s ruling junta to sever ties with the U.S. and expel its military personnel. The U.S. had maintained nearly 1,000 troops in the country as part of its strategy to combat insurgents in the Sahel, a region grappling with violence from groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State. A senior U.S. defense official, preferring to remain anonymous, described the situation as “not great but in the short-term manageable,” despite the unnerving closeness of Russian and U.S. forces.

The Russian move comes at a time when the U.S. and its allies are experiencing a reduction in military footholds in Africa, forced by coups that have brought power groups eager to distance themselves from Western influence. With U.S. troops having recently left Chad, and French forces ousted from Mali and Burkina Faso, the trend is unmistakable.

And Congress is completely out to lunch.  No one is representing the American people's interests.  Disgusting.

And we have 4.5 years of this nonsense, for I am certain the election will be fixed in November.  By the end of that time, we might be a one party system.
