SEOUL, South Korea — President Bashar al-Assad of Syria plans to visit North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, the North’s state-run news media reported on Sunday, setting up potentially the first meeting in Pyongyang between Mr. Kim and another head of state.

“I am going to visit the D.P.R.K.” and meet with Mr. Jong-un, Mr. Assad said on May 30, using the initials of the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Mr. Assad made the remarks as he received the credentials of the new North Korean ambassador, Mun Jong-nam, the reports said. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian president’s office. No further details, such as a date, were released.

There is a park in Syria named for the founder of North Korea, Kim Il Sung. It must be the grandfather of little Kim.  Long time allies with Syria.
