Title: Credit card reader companies discriminate against gun buyers and sellers
Post by: Cincinnatus on May 17, 2013, 05:16:59 pm
A change to the Square seller’s agreement now forbids “payments in connection with … sales of (i) firearms, firearm parts or hardware, and ammunition; or (ii) weapons and other devices designed to cause physical injury,” the iOS/Android payment processing device company announced on its website last week [linked].

“Before the change, Square was happy as a clam to be used for face-to-face firearms sales,” The Truth About Guns blog noted [linked]. “But now, they don’t even want to be used if all you’re buying is something as innocuous as a new pair of grips for your 1911. All deals involving firearms are no longer allowed to be processed through Square.”

“Apparently Square is joining several other payment processors and financial institutions and are now refusing to do business with anyone who has anything to do with guns, ammo or other weapons,” the Guns Save Lives blog observed [linked], adding “Paypal has long had a standing policy of refusing to business with any gun related business, including for things as innocuous as gun magazines. GE Capital, one of the largest lenders in the US recently announced they would no longer work with the gun industry as well.”

“We may decide not to authorize or settle any transaction that you submit to us if we believe that the transaction is in violation of this Agreement,” Square warns its users.

Time to start another payment clearing system - one that doesn't do business with liberals.

Cash or another old fashion way, write a check.

When cash and checks are outlawed,

Only outlaws will have cash and checks...

Cash or another old fashion way, write a check.

Cash and checks are too old-fashioned and, at any rate, cash is issued by the same feckless government bent on wrecking the rest of the economy; it most likely won't hold value.  The new alternative store of value (aka "money") will be something like the bitcoins or the new digital coins Amazon is starting to use.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the government is already seizing bitcoins.

No bubble burst - I said "like" them.  More to the point, so what?  The government can, in fact, seize anything it wants to, whenever it wants to, from whomever it wants to; does that mean that there is no alternative at all to paying for things with government-issued paper?  The government could order banks to stop accepting checks for payment, does that mean checks are no longer a viable means of payment?

My understanding is that currency can be anything, as long as we agree on a measurable value to be assigned.

It makes perfect sense that the people running the money game would not want their "suckers" to have guns. This is as old as time, so, no real surprise here.

Just like any boycott, whatever these Leftist idiots do is meaningless. Anytime they refuse to do business with things like Rush, or arms dealers, they don't stop anything. All they do is create an opportunity for a new competitors who is not so ideologically handcuffed.

On a side note, all money is basically a government check, or at least it is supposed to be. At one time you could take a monetary note into a bank and cash it in for the equivalent amount of gold.

When the U.S. dollar was taken off the gold standard and so called 'fiat money', or 'printed money', became actual currency, money became intrinsically valueless. A U.S. five dollar bill has no more real 'value' than a five dollar bill from a Monopoly game. It only has value because the government says it does, that is the only difference.

People have come to commonly accept a U.S. dollar bill as a 'value marker'. The bill itself is a worthless piece of paper, but it represents $5 of value, like a casino chip, just so long as everyone keeps agreeing to this.

This shaky monetary system depends on people honoring the rules. Once people start to want something real that they can hold in their hands and use or eat, instead of some amorphous "idea" of worth, then this system will collapse and fall apart.

Generally speaking, yes.  However, the benefit that the current fiat money has is that it is so-called "legal tender", meaning that an unwilling creditor can be forced to accept "legal tender" as payment in satisfaction of a debt (that doesn't just mean paper bills, it also includes any system of measurement that is based on the monetary system established by the gov't, which includes the current electronic payment systems).

Yah, but anything can be proclaimed to be 'legal tender' at any time.

It's just a matter of passing a law...

True enough; however, in the present circumstances, the federal government effectively determines what is and what is not legal tender.
