Electricity costs shot up 17.8 percent over the past year for Houston area residents, thanks to record setting demand and tight capacity last summer.

The year-over-year increase was staggering, considering that electricity costs were up 1.1 percent nationwide, rising less than the overall inflation rate of 1.9 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The small, conservative community I live in Texas has bills that are more than 20% down this past year.

They do not adhere to the liberal dogma on windmills.

Mine didn't go up last year as I was on a fixed plan that hadn't increased for three years. But it expired the end of November and search as I could, I couldn't find a plan as good as the one I had.

I redid my 3 yr plan in the summer.

I specifically targeted the least amount of renewables.  Saved quite a bit.

I selected several providers that seemed to be the cheapest. I then took their EFL data and inputted it into Excel with my actual kwh usage by month for the previous year. Then picked the one with the lowest annual cost.
