The first winter storm of 2014 is likely to pack a punch.

Quote
Overview: Winter Storm Hercules will produce a long swath of snow from the Central Plains through the Northeast Wednesday through Friday morning. Strong winds Thursday night along coastal New England will produce blizzard conditions, at times. The next winter storm could spread a wide swath of snow across the Ohio Valley through the Great Lakes and Northeast during the latter part of the weekend.

That's all at present.

Take care, folks.

New York Today: Big Snowstorm

Here’s what you need to know:

• Snow is already falling and may mix with freezing drizzle during the day. But significant accumulations are likely only after 7 p.m.

• There’s no impact on the morning commute so far. N.J. Transit is cross-honoring bus and train tickets systemwide.

• The evening commute could turn messy. Consider leaving work early.

• Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo warned that some suburban highways might close this afternoon. He advised commuters to use mass transit to get home. “We are looking at a serious storm situation,” Mr. Cuomo said.

• The city has issued a hazardous travel advisory for late tonight and Friday.

• Public schools in the city are open. Some suburban schools are closing early or closed altogether. (See list.)

• Alternate side of the street parking is suspended in the city.

• The forecast — a winter storm warning is in effect — calls for six to eight inches of snow by Friday, with the bulk of it falling overnight.

• Heavier snow is expected on Long Island, where a blizzard warning is in effect from 6 p.m. tonight to 1 p.m. Friday.

• Temperatures will hover around freezing today, with a high of 32, dropping to the teens overnight and staying there through Friday. Tomorrow night could get down to single digits.

• That, combined with winds gusting to 30 miles an hour, will make it feel like it’s below zero. Wear long johns. .

• A coastal flood watch is in effect tonight.

• Track the progress of city plows here.

• Advice from the Red Cross on preparing for winter storms here.

When did they (whoever "they" are) start giving names to winter storms?
We're expecting 3"-5" here.

Winter Storm Hercules

Really?  The global cooling/warming/climate change crowd is so desperate they are resorting to naming storms after a mythical hero?

My son named the storm, WTF! He cleaned my walks and driveway twice. I have a snowblower, so it didn't take long. The problem was being zero, along with the wind and chill factor. We are under a weather advisory, but it looks like it let up. This gal isn't going outside, except to take the garbage out. Am hoping a grandkid shows up to do it for me.  :silly:

I think it's just the Weather Channel.............and it's stupid.

The first one I heard about was "Draco."  As in Draco Malfoy of Harry Potter fame.

These people are nuts.

Cold and snowy here, in the teens and very windy.

It's a good time to have a bad cold and have an excuse to stay inside for a few more days.....    ^-^

It's starting to come down pretty hard now. I just shoveled the driveway and it's already covered again.
I'm with you, ML - a few days of staying in, lighting a fire, eating chili ...

Me three! Drifting seems to be the major problem here. I did venture out to pick up my laptop from the computer shop. Stupid me! It was a nasty drive to and from the place, but there wasn't any traffic, so I took my good old time.

Be safe, ladies, and all others adversely affected. Stayed inside, hunker down, share your ideas with the rest of us, and drink some hot chocolate with marshmallows. (Well hot chocolate sounds good to me anyway).

We're under a wind advisory now. Chill factor going to 15 below. Right now, it's -3. A friend ran off the road near Washington Courthouse. He posted on FB that other cars were off the road, too. The drifting is horrible. Though my walks were cleared twice today, my doors are blocked from drifting. We've been going in and out through the garage.

I have no where to go. My son bought me a mini freezer for Christmas. It's half full with meat. I also have an extra frig in the garage full of food. Then, there is all the Christmas leftovers I froze. I'm going to get fat as heck if the weather stays like this.

My son just called. His power went out from the wind. I have two generators, so he's coming to pick the big one up. It will be difficult for him to get them started in this weather.

Tell him to leave it in the car with the heater running for 20 minutes after he gets home. It'll warm up enough to start easily.

Reminds me of my Minnesota days, and I LIKE it!

On my agenda........... laundry, UN-decorating and some reading.

I've had a nasty head cold, so there's no way I'm venturing outside for very long.

But I've got to tell you, it's really pretty out there, and there's nothing quite so beautiful as a bright, scarlet cardinal in the snow.

My Christmas stuff is packed and put away. I do a lot of shopping on Amazon, and love their boxes. I break them down, and then, remake them as I need them.

It is beautiful outside. Everything is coated in soft white snow. And then, when the weather warms up, it will be ugly grey slush.

Looks like it's going to be a while before the pretty turns ugly, happy!  Have you seen the forecast?  Yikes!

I use Amazon boxes for everything!  With kids living overseas as often as mine do, I send all sorts of things to them in the many Amazon boxes I keep in storage.

My problem is that I need big, chunky boxes to hold all the other boxes in, and unless I order a computer or DVD player, they're hard to come by!

I just threw two of those away. One had a mini freezer in it, and the other, a snow blower. You can by any size boxes at UHaul. I have a few left from when my son moved into his new home.

I live on the east end of Long Island. We got over a foot of snow [not counting drifts], and with the wind chill, it's -1. They're talking winds in excess of 30 mph for the rest of the day. Right now, it's sunny, but I shoveled the back deck and ramp for the dogs, shoveled the front porch and steps, and used the snow blower for the driveway. It was cold, and I'm tired. That's why God invented Portuguese anisette. : :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Yeah, you're not all that far from where they got the worst of it-Massachusetts.

I live in a townhouse-a condo community, so all the shoveling is done for us.  It took me awhile to get both cars cleaned off, started up and de-iced.  I was going to go walking around for a bit, but its really too icy/slippery around here at the moment.  So, the cats are camped out in front of the fire and I am piddling around.

The weather report here says icy roads, along with around 14 inches of snow, with low visibility. -15 degrees with a chill factor of -45 degrees. I don't remember it ever getting that cold. I shut off two rooms and have the thermostat on 70 degrees and am comfortable. I might even close up my bedroom and sleep on the couch, that turns into a bed, just to keep the wind away. But then, I like a cold room. It will be like the good old days growing up, when ice would accumulate on our bedroom windows, and you could see your breath. Mom made heavy quilts out of old coats and other heavy clothing, so we were always warm, until we got out of bed.  :silly:

When it got that cold as a kid, we'd sleep in the kitchen. Baby sister in her cot and blankets actually half under the wood stove, me next to her in my sleeping bag, then Mom and Dad sharing a sleeping bag. Dad would get up every so often to put more wood on.

Lima-area larger consumers may experience natural gas service interruption because of extreme weather

Dominion East Ohio is advising large industrial and commercial customers in its West Ohio territory that they may experience an interruption in their natural gas service because of potentially record-setting low temperatures forecasted for Monday and Tuesday. Dominion's curtailment plan on file with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio calls for Dominion to contact those customers in the event of potential supply curtailment. At this time the company does not anticipate any service impacts its 65,000 Lima-area residential customers.

“We are curtailing service to some larger customers to ensure that our residential and critical service customers receive their natural gas supply. The company wanted to give ample notice to our larger natural gas users so that they can implement their business continuity plans accordingly,” said Scott Miller, vice president and general manager, Dominion East Ohio. “We have also notified Lima city officials so that they are aware of the possibility of these planned service interruptions. As always, we want all of our customers to be safe and careful during this extremely cold weather.”

With extremely cold temperatures, Dominion urges all of it customers to take prudent conservation measures, which could include reducing thermostat or water heating temperature settings. Dominion always recommends that if customers smell gas that they leave the area and call Dominion at 1-800-877-4715. If Lima-area residential customers experience any service interruptions they should notify Dominion as soon as possible at 1-800- 877-4715.

Dominion East Ohio is a unit of Dominion, one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of approximately 23,500 megawatts of generation, 11,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline and 6,400 miles of electric transmission lines. Dominion operates one of the nation's largest natural gas storage systems, with 947 billion cubic feet of storage capacity, and serves retail energy customers in 15 states. For more information about Dominion, visit the company's website at www.dom.com.

It's pretty darn awful in our neck of the woods. Rained like crazy last night when the temp was still in the 40s and upper 30s, then suddenly turned to snow. Meanwhile, the wind started howling at over 30 mph and the temperature dropped to the low 20s by 8 a.m. today. I thought we were going to lose the roof. So now the roads have a layer of ice topped with a few inches of snow and the temperature will be in single digits by this afternoon, with wind chills well below zero. No sighting of Manbearpig yet, but I'm super serial that I'll get out the rifle if I see him.

We're half way in between mountaineer and happyg.

We had three or four hours of rain last night before the temps dropped to 32 at around midnight (which got rid of most of the snow on the ground), then appear to have gotten about 2-3 inches overnight with temps dropping like a rock and a LOT of wind.

Right now it's about two below zero here with winds in the 20 mph range, making the wind chill somewhere around 35 below.

All schools and universities closed, and the temps are dropping throughout the day.

It's WINTER, folks!   As long as you're inside, it's fun!   ^-^

Mr. M made it to work, but who knows what the roads will be like by this afternoon. I'm going to venture out and see if there's any point to shoveling the driveway. I suspect with the layer of ice underneath, the answer is negatory!

We have an uphill driveway, and the most adventurous I'm getting is trying to walk up the driveway to get the mail.

If I start sliding on ice, I may wait for Mr. Musiclady to get it on his way home.  Haven't talked with him since he got in to work, but he'll drive in anything!

A lot of homeless will NOT stay at a shelter for safety and health reasons....in addition to their own issues.  His laptop would be history when he fell asleep, for example.

I do feel bad for all of you.  It's actually amazing to see this much of the nation in a deep freeze.

It's 2 degrees here right now, supposed to dip to -2 in a couple of hours with a wind chill of -20.  My brother has to work midnite shift tonight at the refinery where he works - has to go outside.  Prayers for those who have to work in this!

Wouldn't it be something if we had a polar shift and now North Dakota is the North Pole?

......carry on!   :patriot:

Watch a Water Bottle Freeze Seconds After Being Exposed to the ‘Polar Vortex’
Jan. 6, 2014 7:18pm Oliver Darcy

A video uploaded to the Internet Monday appears to show a bottle of water freeze within seconds amid brutally cold temperatures in Chicago.

According to the YouTube description, the video was shot in minus 13 degree conditions on Monday. At the time of publication, the video’s view counter was stuck at 301.

The bitter cold temperatures are part of the “Polar Vortex” which is currently sweeping across the Midwest and Northwest.

I baked a cake and sat it in the freezer in the garage, and it was cooled within a half hour. Right now, it's -12 and windy, and calling for more snow. We already had 14 inches.

My oldest son couldn't get to work today because he road was closed. My youngest son works at the refinery and has to spend a lot of time outside in this stuff. So far, all is well, in that the power is still on and Dominion hasn't run out of gas.

AH!  The Dayton Flyers!  LOL!

Was born and raised in Buffalo, NY.

Now the rest of the country gets to know what we deal with every year.   (I hate the cold)

Indeed!  Prayers for all who have to be outside, and for those who have lost power.

It's one thing to enjoy the bizarre, frigid weather from inside a warm house, but to be outside is downright dangerous.

btw, our thermometer is now registering -20!!!!!

For the middle of Ohio, that is COLD!

(And the wind is still howling out there!)

My son lives in Amsterdam, near Albany, so I got a good taste of Buffalo snow. Never again! The snow stuck to my headlights, and I couldn't see anything, and I couldn't pull over. A cop pulled me over, cleaned off my headlights, and guided me to the next exit where there was a motel. That is the last time I drove there in the winter.

January 4, 2014, St. Joseph Lighthouse in Benton Harbor
on Lake Michigan west of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Research since 2001
links extreme weather and the Arctic polar vortex of upper-level winds
that normally flow counterclockwise in a low-pressure system over either
Baffin Island or northeast Siberia. But when those winds slow down, it allows
the jet stream to plunge over the United States. In the first week of January 2014,
the jet stream has dipped down to Florida and caused dangerous freezing
temperatures in at least 22 states.

This is what happens to animals left outside in the cold.... it is a cruel and inhumane way to die.......

That picture was horrible that poor baby. My dog has short hair and when I let her out to go to the bathroom she goes and comes right back in she hates the cold and I don't blame her. I never let her out more than a few minutes when cold out and even then she shakes when she gets back in. I grab her and warm her up with a towel if she gets wet from the snow. She won't wear a doggy sweater or vest so I do what is second best. Why even have a pet if it is kept outside. I have never figured out why people do that. I grew up in a family that had house pets they lived inside unless going to the bathroom or playing with us. I have treated my animals the same and enjoyed and loved them. I will never know how keeping a dog tied up or caged outside is considered having a pet.

My Daisy wears "jammies" now and had a velour blanket in her bed.  The last few days she has been curled up in a tight ball in her bed snuggled into her blankie... the other two sleep on my bed and they have been sleeping right up against me and practically on top of one-another - and that is inside and we are nowhere as cold as TN....... this picture and people who do that to their pets makes me furious.
