9/11 Twenty five years later
« on: Thursday, Sep 03, 2026 12:52 pm »
I was part of the Federal Disaster Response team (DMORT) and as a forensic dentist was on the ground in Western Pennsylvania where Flight 93 went down the next day. Several months later, I wrote the following.
--------------------------------

Reflections on Freedom and Flight 93

As I stood on that mound of dirt and looked out at the Pennsylvania field that September day, I was reminded of a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that, "the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge." That recovered strip mine in Somerset County is hallowed ground, as hallowed as the beaches of Normandy, Iwo Jima, Lexington Green or the fields of Gettysburg. It was there that 40 people rose up, joined together to fight back and gave their lives. They were a cross section of America in its truest form. Young and old, married and single, Christian and Jew, straight and gay, black and white, from coast to coast and between they joined together to fight an unspeakable evil.
We'll never know how many people sleep comfortably in their beds tonight thanks to those heroic passengers. It might be your spouse or parents or your children or your nieces or nephews who might have been the intended targets of the hijackers that day. Instead, they made the ultimate sacrifice in that time of challenge.
There were other heroes that day in the Pentagon and at the World Trade Center. From all the military personnel who waded through deadly fire and smoke to rescue unknown comrades because it was the right thing to do to the police officer who died after repeatedly pulling injured survivors out of the burning tower to lead them to safety and going back in to rescue more.
Then there's the fire captain who led by example reaching the 78th floor with his men in the hope of rescuing survivors only to lose his life there. I thought of the lawyer who worked in the building next to the World Trade Center who was a part time paramedic. He grabbed his emergency bag, donning a pair of gloves and while others were fleeing to safety went into harm's way to rescue others and died there.
I thought of these people as we served and felt the awesome responsibility to help identify them and bring them home to their families. It was in that time of challenge and crisis that they acted the way we all hope we would have acted. I thought of them as I drove past nearly three hundred miles of flags of every size and shape on the way back home to my family.           Suddenly, the colors took on a new meaning in a much more personal way. I understand now why the red is a symbol for the blood spilled in the defense of liberty and purity of the white and the valor of the blue. The flag stands for all that is right with America and is as representative of its freedoms today as it was when first sewn over two centuries ago. When my children ask of heroes, I'll tell them of those who fell on 9/11.

I refuse to live in fear.
I am an American.
I will travel whenever I want in this great land of ours
undeterred by the threats of others.
I will take my children to our treasured landmarks
and historical sites.
I will not retreat from an adventuresome journey
because of others with a disdain for our way of life.
It is the legacy of our forefathers who shed their blood
on battlefields throughout the world to protect
our democratic institutions.
I will show my children this country in all its majesty,
from the beauty of a Pacific sunset to the bright lights of Broadway
to the beacon held high by Lady Liberty.
I will show them Ellis Island,
the gateway to a new world with the hopes and dreams of millions.
This nation was forged by an amalgam of spirited people
who believed in self-determination.
I will not bow to those who challenge that notion.
It dishonors the memory of those who have gone before me.
I refuse to let the actions of a few destroy my will.
I will show my children the monuments to our presidents
who persevered in times of crisis and triumphed over evil.
I will show them Arlington National Cemetery
and the graves of those who fell in the defense of freedom.
I will show them a field in the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania
Where citizen soldiers fought back
and gave their lives in the latest struggle.
I have seen the horrors of that fateful day.
I have watched as flags ruffled in the breeze unbowed
as the smoke rose from the ashes.
Its pungent odor and acrid smell did not destroy our spirit.
I have heard the countless untold stories of heroism
that will stay with me forever.
To live timidly disgraces their honor.
I will keep that dream alive.
I refuse to live in fear.
I am an American.

MKK 9/11/03

PS My children are adults now but we went to every place I said we would.

Not me, but to paraphrase Dick Winters, I heard stories of heroism and saw the best of this country.
25 years later, I'm not so sure and this country has changed..
On the morning of 9/12/01 when I got to Shanksville, the only people allowed in the site were responders and all those people from the Alphabet agencies from DC.
I stood there looking at the impact site waiting for the others on my team to arrive and a guy (don't know what agency) looked at the hole and said,
" you know what that is? It's the latest battleground in the war between Christianity and Islam".
It's not PC to say it but it's reality and lens with which we have to view it if we want to be honest.

With 4 muslimes elected to the 119th Congress and the mayor of NYC, among others in State and Local Government and the hesitation of the Trump Administration to wipe Iran 'off the map'-IMHO, I'd say we are indeed losing the war.

No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Shortly after 9/11, I travelled to Exchange Place, Jersey City, NJ, frequently for business.

It's right across the Hudson River from that part of Manhattan.

There was a P.A.T.H. station and ferries to bring people back and forth between Jersey City and Manhattan.

My co-workers who were in Jersey City that day let people coming off the ferries use their hotel room showers to wash the soot/filth/dust off themselves.

When I arrived, every pole had missing person flyers on it.  I'll never forget first seeing the Polish Stab In The Back statue in Jersey City set against the backdrop of the smoke and haze that still eminated from Ground Zero.

There were mobile TV news studios all around.  In the hotel elevator, I ran into an exhausted AT&T worker who was part of the crew attempting to re-connect or re-route all the telecommunication lines that were severed when the Towers fell.

Every day, I'd wake up to a hazy sun as Ground Zero was still smoldering.  Later, at night, I'd see the brights lights that illuminated Ground Zero so first responders could conduct their recovery work.

I still tear up.  There are a couple of pieces of World Trade steel in my town as monuments of local residents who perished, including an America Airlines flight attendent.

Two of the planes took off from Boston and many local lost their lives on those flights.  The fighter jets that were scrambled came from Joint Base Edwards / Otis Air Force Base / Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod.

It was a tragic experience that will always remain with me.  I'll always hold the Pakistani Intelligence Services, United Arab Emirates, and the Saudi Royal Family responsible.  No amount of green-washing (Formula-1, LIV Golf) will ever change that.

One good thing I took away from the experience is to make sure that "I love you" are the last words I tell my wife before I end calls with her.  The last thing many of the victims did before they perished was to say "I love you" to family and friends.

My co-workers and I were stuck in east-bound traffic on the old Tappan Zee Bridge when news of the anthrax attacks at NBC studios started coming across the radio.

9/11 is a part of me.  I don't want to forget.  I want to speak truth to power so it never happens again.
"Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it’s entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." - Alan Simpson, Frontline Video Interview

A friend of ours is a social work professor who served on a team sent to the site, I believe as a counselor for responders and those recovering remains. She was there for many weeks in the midst of the dust and debris.  She now has many health problems, likely caused by the toxic substances, but says she was glad to be of service.
I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

There were so many horrific images from that day, but that one always stood out to me.

As most people, 9/11 had a profound affect on me. It still brings me to tears (and I'm not a cryer). I will never forget.

One unsung hero of 9/11 was the Salvation Army. They set up a canteen ( known as Sal's Bistro) at the Medical Examiner's Office compound for those doing identifications and ran it 24/7 until May 2002 for FREE.
They would not take donations at the site as is their rule even if people wanted to donate. I made a promise to never, ever, walk past their canteens without throwing in a donation. Two years later I was in California for a licensing exam that ran 3 days and I had to walk past a Salvation Army kettle 4 times a day ( in and out in the morning and same in the afternoon). What can I say, I'm OCD and superstitious. By day 3, guy watching the kettle recognized me and asked what was my story. He liked it when I told him why I was donating 12 times and yes I passed the exam.

Know what I hate more?

The bastard communist traitors who rolled over within months to start welcoming the bastards in here to move in en masse, and lecture all of us about hating on poor Moslems and alleged hate crimes against them, including don’t say a damned thing about how Islam was responsible for this vile ambush against innocent people.

Now we’re replete with Moslems, whereas on 9/11 I wasn’t aware of Moslems in our region.  Yes, I mean our specific area, not the us as a whole.  Remember when Uhbama visited a “Baltimore” mosque?  That was in the neighborhood of my aunt and cousins!  Around the corner literally, from my dentist!

I preferred more homogeneity that we had before 9/11.

What kind of twisted people are these communist traitors in our midst?

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 VICTIMS

https://web.archive.org/web/20030812073545/http://www.albertarose.org/Remember/victims.htm

Sean Schielke, 27, New York, N.Y.

I knew him fairly well, he was 3 years older than me, went to my high school and I played football with his twin brother.

Thank you for posting these, @mystery-ak
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Jim Jones was a socialist Democrat.
