Not the snakes.
The snakes were new.
The business wasn’t.
From 1979 to 1992, Miami was a remarkable collision of immigration, money, crime, politics, entrepreneurship, nightlife, and sheer institutional improvisation. It was also a city where legitimate business and illegitimate business sometimes operated so close together that you needed a scorecard to tell them apart.
That Miami became the mythology of Miami Vice, Scarface, and countless stories about cocaine and corruption.
But mythology has a bad habit of leaving out the machinery.
So I went back to the Miami I remember and asked a simpler question:
What happens when an entire city becomes an ecosystem for people who know how to move things, move money, and keep asking questions later?
Apparently, you get mambas.
