For what it’s worth, Mark Carney has a 60% approval rating.  We could have a friendly neighbor in Pierre Poilievre, but Donald completely destroyed his 25 point lead a couple of months before the election.  Nothing about this “messing with” Canada makes any sense, and just proves the Republicans are a bunch of sissies for not doing anything to stop it.

Yeah, Trump's pretty evil.  Thanks for clearing that up.
Keep in mind, he's just the symptom, the disease is the system that let this happen in the first place.

By whose authority was this named in the first place?

BTW, that lake is now named geographically correct as it resides in America, not just Ontario.

Wow you guys are pedantic.

And just why does THIS lake get to be called America?  Why not the others of the HOMES Great Lakes?

He can troll all he likes, just don't use the government to do it.

This isn't hurting anyone he's actually targeting. His orders have no effect on Canada, but we Americans have to deal with this abuse of the system. Especially considering that Google is lying down without any resistance.

The closest thing we have to any sort of direct precedent to this kind of chicanery is the Mount McKinley / Denali dispute. In that case, both names have been recognized for decades, and it could go either way. Nobody ever called Lake Ontario "Lake America" until Trump made it up, despite efforts to generate a fake AI French map that's been floating around as damage control. No one called the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" until Trump made it up.

You want to blame corporate branding changes? When was Aunt Jemima ordered to change by executive order? Please. The only time there was ever a meddling in a corporate brand change was when the Trademark Board canceled the Washington Redskins, and I dare you to take a look at who was President when that decision was made (hint: not Obama or Biden).

And as much as we may disagree with the changes to places like Fort Bragg, at least there was a reason as much as one might disagree with the motive.

Right now, we're dealing with something bordering on Orwellian, a President who has discovered he can simply take the stroke of a pen and rewrite the map, just because he says so, with no rhyme or reason. We, as conservatives, ought to be upset! How did we end up letting one person have this much authority over something so integral to our daily lives, with no check or balance? It's pure madness. It's like taking a child's doodlings with a crayon and making it the binding law of the land. How did we get to this point?

Totally with you here.

And again, it’s all the EO…which ironically, as tyrannical as they can be, can easily be undone by the next.

Some things I like that Trump did, such as another decades old EO being erased (now I can’t remember what it was, but had something to do with black activism).  Again, ironic, how he can erase another paper-thin EO bit of tyranny so easily.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue.

It was the Iroquois, in which their word "oniataríio" means “lake of shining waters.”

So the whole province is a lake of shining waters, too?

Yeah, well....

This is just trolling.

You want disease, look at Seattle, with junkies shooting up on the streets, or California's insanity, or New York City. Somewhere, though, at the root of all this is our Constitution. Is that the disease of which you speak? Because the alternatives are far worse.

Good Lord, the false equivalency. "He retweeted something" is nowhere near on par with "he used an executive order to force the government and strongarm all the major Big Tech corporations into changing the name of a lake that's never been called anything else in 400 years to a name never used before, for no reason other than being drunk on his own power."

I think it was tongue in cheek. But the truth is that Lake Ontario has been known by other names, including Frontenac and St. Louis. So the Canadians' insistence on "Ontario, now and forever" is a bit disingenuous. This does not mean I support what Trump did.

The war is between provinces.  They want to cutoff oil and gas to Ontario.  See map.

This is an act of a sovereign country. They are free to do as they wish.

So are we.

And we can retaliate by banning Canadians from access to US healthcare.  tipping hat!!

Not so many years ago there were places in California called "bleep Bar", "bleep Slough", and "bleep Pond". All near Sacramento. At the time they were named the names were ubiquitous.

Only later did some folks find offense at the names at which point they were changed.

The name "Lake Ontario" is to me horribly offensive and I thank President Trump for being sensitive and caring enough to rename it to something more acceptable.  tipping hat!!

Well, after that the British and French left our ships alone and since that issue was the casus belli then, yes, we won.

That's correct.  Some disputed land went to England (present day Canada) and some went to the US as Territories.  More importantly, the British and French stopped raiding our ships to Impress our Sailors, which started the War of 1812!

Quote
The Treaty of Ghent restored the pre-war territorial status quo and did not settle the maritime issues that had contributed to the war.[25] Impressment largely ceased after 1815 because the end of the Napoleonic Wars removed Britain's wartime manpower emergency, but Britain did not formally renounce its wider maritime claims in the treaty. Later Anglo-American disputes over the stopping, visiting, searching, and seizure of American vessels continued in narrower contexts, especially anti-slave-trade enforcement, and rare American allegations of post-war impressment appeared in diplomatic correspondence in the 1820s.

I think that is a very fair assessment of how that war ended...with a whimper.  After the impressment gangs ended, there was residual resentment over things like the Brits putting DC to the torch.

Canada would not certify American made Gulfstreams, while we have been permiting Canada to sell us Canadian made Bombadiers.

I’ve defended him time and time again, but it’s getting much harder to do so.   I’m afraid the closer it gets to the end of his term, the more outlandish his attempts at building a lasting legacy will be.

Senility? Maybe. I don't think that's as huge of an issue as it is with Biden, but the lower inhibitions might be slightly influenced by age.

I think it's more that he's a lame duck and just doesn't really care much anymore.

I don't really get this idea. 1, what could possibly be that big that it would require a distraction, and 2, when has that idea ever been borne out in the past? The whole idea of "something bigger going on behind the scenes" seems Qanon-ey.
