President Trump is renewing pressure on Senate Republicans to pass a House-approved bill to make daylight saving time permanent, but the effort is running into stiff opposition from GOP senators whose states would be plunged into early-morning darkness during the winter.

Trump, in a Wednesday post on Truth Social, said “people are sick and tired of having to change their clocks twice a year,” claiming it “costs Millions of Dollars” and could be “bad for your health in the anxiety it creates.”

“This is an issue that Republicans, Dumocrats, and Independents can unite behind. I am asking Republican Senators to PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP,” Trump urged.

It was a message similar to one the president sent last week and suggests he’s not about to let the issue go.

The House passed the bill a month ago to make daylight saving time permanent with a strong bipartisan majority of 308 to 117.

But Senate Republicans from different states have argued that the change would force kids to wait for school buses in the dark and twilight on cold winter mornings.

Senate GOP sources say the legislation would not be able to pass the upper chamber with unanimous consent and warn that pushing it to the floor under regular order would take up at least a week of the Senate’s time. That’s a big price to pay when there are only a few weeks of legislative session left in the year and a lot of priorities on the agenda, they say.

Exactly.  My state doesn't do DST, and we like it that way!  If the US Congress comes sniffing around, they are likely to force us to use it against our will.  Either cancel DST entirely and go Standard only (like France and China) or leave it the bleep alone!

(NEXSTAR) – As the end of daylight saving time grows ever nearer (it’s happening as early as possible this year), President Trump has continued his push to have the Senate pass a bill that would lock the clocks.

If daylight saving time were to become permanent, winters could feel different for many of us.

Under the Sunshine Protection Act, states that do not exempt themselves would observe daylight saving time year-round. Since Hawaii and most of Arizona already observe year-round standard time, they would remain exempt.

Outside of those two states, sunrises and sunsets would happen later than they currently do between early November and March.

In much of the U.S., the sun wouldn’t rise until after 8 a.m. for at least part of the winter. For some, the sun wouldn’t come up until after 9 a.m.

The trade-off, though, would be later sunsets in winter.

Depending on where you live, many winter sunsets may happen in the 4 or 5 o’clock hours. If our clocks did not fall back an hour in November, as they have done for years, those sunsets would shift to the 5 and 6 o’clock hours, respectively.

You may even be privy to a sunset after 7 p.m. — something we don’t see during winter now.

I propose a "test period" of two years:
- For one year, stay on DST all year, and see how it goes.
then...
- The next year, stay on standard time all year, and see how that goes.

Then let the people decide -- a national referendum.

All fine and good, but at one point in time we in FL voted on whether or not to keep daylight savings time.  We voted to keep it but the bottom line IIRC was it couldn't go into affect until the feds made it law.  So .... here we sit .... 

IMO the importance of this law sits at the bottom of my "need the GOP to act" list.

Meh, most people can chew gum and walk at the same time.  No reason to think this is stopping anything else from being worked on/passed.

Personally, I think they should just pick a time and leave it there. Does not matter to me what hour one calls noon.. just pick one.

Honestly the whole Elon Musk episode was maybe one of the best efforts to contain the debt since the 90's, so I'll give Trump credit for that.

Problem is you have a nation of debtors who elector debtors to make our laws. There's no adults in the room anymore and nobody wants to be the bad guy.

That is a ridiculous statement. I know you are more intelligent than that. Unless you are calling for an elimination of the filibuster, and I am all for that. There has not been 19 months of GOP rule. It takes 60 votes in the Senate to advance/change anything.

That also does not change the fact that one can work on many issues at a time. Dealing with small issues, does not take away time from larger issues.
