CNN was very upset about the tweet that President Donald Trump made with him joke slamming their logo.

How would one know they were seriously triggered?

They slammed Trumps tweet as ‘inciting violence’ against journalists.

But they did even more than that.

CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

Wait?

So CNN was so disturbed, not just by Trump tweeting the GIF, but they actually hunted down this guy, got an apology out of him with a deletion all his ‘offensive’ material and a promise to reform his behavior with the possible threat of doxxing hanging over his head.

 German Lopez ✔ @germanrlopez
I can't emphasize how bad this is on CNN's part. This is basically "don't post stuff we don't like or we'll dox you." Extremely unethical.

Isn't it interesting that any reporting deemed to be unfavorable to Trump containing an anonymous source brings immediate screeches of "FAKE NEWS!!!" but now the same people demand anonymity for neo nazi trash.

That's not the point and you know it. Whether your overall point is valid or not, it does not apply in this case. It is not his fault that Trump picked up his meme. He has nothing to do with this whole thing. He was just goofing off on-line when all of this dropped on him.

The fact that CNN would blackmail him to "reform his behavior and his posts" is the issue. You seem to be OK with what CNN is doing. Let us hope that you never piss off CNN, or they may come after you next.

I don't guy into the whole "blackmail" angle on this -- I think CNN didn't expose the poster for other reasons.  Perhaps it is his/her age.

But if it's that he/she is 15, why the hell wouldn't CNN just say "the person is a minor and we didn't think it would do any good to expose their name."   At least that's an excuse/explanation that would seem somewhat plausible/reasonable.

Whoever at CNN made the statement decided to bully the kid.   Perhaps its not blackmail but it pretty sad for an organization like CNN to step down into the gutter that far to be threatening 15 year olds.

I'm not sure I understand why we're supposed to buy that he or she is 15 years old. I don't see any evidence of it so by the very standards of Trumpers, its fake news.

Well, it probably would have been worse for the kid (assuming it really is a kid) if they'd exposed him.  But I'd agree that it is stupid for them to have publicized the "if you do this again we're exposing you" threat.

I just don't have much of a problem with the core concept.  "If you ever do this again I'm telling your parents" threat has been around long before CNN.

Of course it is fake news, by your standard. Anything you do not wish to be true is 'fake news', right CC?

Agreed -- why wouldn't CNN just come out and say that they don't want to publicize the name of a minor?  The media often doesn't identify minors by name, so it would seem to be a pretty legitimate excuse if it is actually true.

And that's enough to make me think that the "15 year old kid" angle may not be true at all.

If I see FNC as the source I always ignore the information as unreliable.
The alt-right is on the march when they want to distract from something that doesn't put their guy in a favorable light.  They try to frame the information so as to discredit the source as FAKE.
By now most of us are quite aware of how the DT cabal operates.

That wasn't what they were doing though.  They werent even saying 'Don't use our trademarked logo", they were bullying him to not post something they didn't like.    The threat they used was they would release his identity to the world.  Opening him up to all of the crazies.

Thats more in line with what the delinquent wanna be drug dealer down at the end of the street would say.

Wait... what?   How, exactly, is the creator of the video bigoted?  I saw no evidence of bigotry in the creation of that short bit of video.   And if the creator really is just 15, you're accusing a kid of bigotry... based on your pre-conceived bias against Trump (IMO).  A kid that just thought he was being funny and a smart ass.  You know that, right?

What does CNN gain by doing that?  If their only goal was to "shut him up", they could have done that by exposing his name.  That would have opened him up to all the crazies and made him absolutely desperate to try to recover some degree of privacy/anonymity again.

I think they had other reasons that they have not stated publicly for not exposing his name.  It may just be a random kid, in which case they're stupid for not just saying that.  But it might also be a friend/relative/or someone else that CNN likes whom they do not want to embarrass.

You can rest assured that if they thought it was just an average Trump supporter, than name would be blasted all over CNN.  The poster referred to Trump as the "God Emperor", and if I remember my Herbert correctly, that would make him a giant worm.  So it's probably safe to say he doesn't like Trump, so they cut him some slack.

They are so inept they can't even bully someone properly.

For a international news organization to make threats against a private individual is a very poor choice.    I don't like Trump, never have, but he is playing the media like a fiddle.

I'm just going by what the CNN employee (andrew kaczynski @KFILE) is tweeting but he is putting his name to it and that lends some credibility to what he's saying. I also notice others admitting that we're talking about a middle aged man (but the seriousness of the charge is what matters).

As far as the threat to "out" him is concerned, its BS.

I was interviewed on camera by FOX's Griff Jenkins (Nice guy BTW) in 09 at a local tea party rally. The segment never aired but I had to sign a release form. On that release form was a line that said that unless otherwise explicitly agreed to, my confidentiality (including identity) could be released if it became relevant to the story.

Lol.... not arguing with you.... but against those here that are calling this person a Neo-Nazi.  And making a few anti-Semitic cracks (the guy is a smart ass, after all) does not automatically mean he's a Neo-Nazi (and yeah, @Cripplecreek , this one's for you).

I think people are too quick to slap labels on others they don't even know.... just because of their own pre-conceived biases (and I'm guilty of it too re: calling lefties leftists).  But being called a Neo-Nazi has become just as idiotic as calling someone a racist just because you disagree with their politics.

Calling folks anything with "Nazi" in it is bad form, IMO.

The CNN brand is taking a HUGE hit on this.   They've become a laughingstock around the world.

It looks like somebody finally gave them enough rope to hang themselves by....

and they fell for it.

Gotta love it.

If CNN is going so far to threaten to Dox the guy, it is time to double and triple down and have a mock CNN meme party.

@AbaraXas

You can snatch some from Shapiro's Twitter page.

I don't know if it's been mentioned here, but I also read there that the meme creator isn't fifteen years old.  He's middle aged.

@CatherineofAragon
Which meme creator do you mean? The current story as per Buzzfeed is that there are two. Apparently the Reddit user did an original video with meme and general format. Someone else picked it up, used different video, added the audio track, and that is the one that Trump used. The video that Trump posted is different from the one on Reddit in several significant ways.

At this point, we have at least two meme creators, and the guy on Reddit is not the person who made what Trump posted.

It makes no difference if he's 9 or 90, he or a she, sinner or saint; CNN has no business shutting down a person's speech.  They have shown themselves to be incredibly vile.

The person most grateful to CNN right now is Chris Christie.   :silly:

Yep. These Trump haters really are mental. Their hate is not based on anything, except pure hate. They point to no policy, no actual action, no bill, no nothing, to justify their hate. They just hate for the sake of hate. It must be a horrible way to live. A horrible life. It is irrational. And they have no sense of humor at all, unless the humor is directed at Trump, his family, his staff, or his supporters.

I'm no cheerleader for Trump, but I thank God that I was spared the TDS disease the Trump haters have. I couldn't live like them. They should just kill themselves and get it over with. If I had to live with as much hate in my soul as they have in theirs, that's what I would do.

Trump is the President. Trump will be the President for the foreseeable future. And all the Hate in the world will not change that. I can't imagine what these haters think they are accomplishing. It is a mystery to me?

I've thought about that a considerable amount because I was NT for a short time.   I hated Obama and think he is a traitor.

Trump is a crass, spoiled kid who has never had to pay for his mistakes.   Trump is not a traitor and has done some pretty good things since coming into office.  If Cruz had done these very same things people on the right would be cheering.

IMO if you approach Trump the right way he will change his position. He is the best of the two bad alternatives and can hopefully help pull us back from the abyss.

However he can't do it alone and sitting on the sidelines cheering for him to fail is only hurting the country, which those people claim they love.

Excellent point.

The problem is that there are too many conservatives who take a pseudo-apocalyptic view of politics -- that if everything false apart, some wonderful conservative leader and new conservative majority will emerge magically from the ashes.  So, they're perfectly fine with tearing down Trump and anyone else insufficiently pure because they are convinced this preferred alternative will appear.

I've learned it is impossible to reason with such people.

Again, expounding on my thesis of irrational hate for the sake of hate and nothing more, the question is, 'What is the goal?' Even if Trump loses his office, 'So what?' Then we have Pence, who agrees with almost all of Trump's policies and Trump's staffing choices. So what would change?

That's what I mean when I say there is no purpose or direction to their hate. There is no 'plan', and there is no better option. I can't figure out what they want, or expect to happen? That is what I mean when I say it is mindless hate. It really is. It is purposeless hate with no clear goal.

And again, I feel sorry for them, but at the same time I am glad I do not have to live like them. It must be terrible to wake up every morning and to have to face another day. Sad.

Leaving aside for a moment the corporate media giant threatening to crush a private citizen posting to the internet, haven't the cyber-scriveners at CNN heard of the Streisand effect?  Now they deservedly have created a whole genre of Trump-beating-CNN video memes, and the generally useless conspiracy-mongers at Infowars have finally done something useful: offering a $20,000 prize for the best to make sure the genre grows rapidly.

I've ceased trying to understand it.  Its irrational and destructive.   I've ceased feeling sorry for them as they are making life more difficult for those around them.  Worse yet they are making it even more difficult to fix the things that need fixing.  They are the cement block around the feet of conservatives trying to swim.

I agree.  The problem is that the pseudo-apocalyptic conservatives don't agree.  To them, their actions are perfectly rational -- tear down anything that doesn't meet their standards, and eventually, their views will prevail.  So while it is often simply emotion-driven hate, it also is a calculated strategy.  They're completely wrong, but it is a strategy.

The problem with these supposedly rightie websites is.... the ownership and management changes hands.... regularly.  Changes for the worse, in fact.   Look at how differently Brietbart is being run now.  Hell, Fox News is being run and ruined by the liberal spawn and in-laws of Murdoch.

The same is going on, I suspect, with the Treehouse, although I admit that I have not followed their "history"... at all.   The agenda is to take over anything called conservative and corrupt it from within.  And the agenda is succeeding..... one rightie website/venue at a time.

The left and the media (though I repeat myself) will work together to discredit conservative thought any chance they get.  Websites that delve into wacky conspiracy theories discredit not only themselves, but any conservative who may be sucked in by those theories.  And that ends up discrediting those conservatives as well.

It is not enough to be right.  We have to be right in a manner that makes it difficult to discredit/refute us to the millions of other Americans who are still persuadable on important issues.

I've seen the alt-right described pretty accurately by people like Ben Shapiro, Jonah Goldberg, and John Podhoretz.  They're all Jewish, and they've all received anti-semitic crap from the alt-right.

A couple of incidents stick out in my mind, and they're just what I've happened to see.  One was when an alt-righter tweeted to Shapiro that he and his family, including his days-old infant son, should burn in a gas chamber.  Another was when Milo Yiannopolous tweeted a picture of a black baby to Shapiro after the birth of his child with the sentiment, "Sympathy to Ben for having to watch his baby come out black."

Well, not really.  Jim Hoft, a nutcase loon, founded Gateway Pundit and still runs it.  Conservative Treehouse hasn't changed hands...at least, I don't think so.  Fox lost all credibility a long time ago, when Ailes told Trump he would do everything he could to get him elected.  He made the place a propaganda outlet.

The problem with calling them "supposedly" conservative is based in a mistake I used to make, which was thinking that people on our side can't be nuts.  They can, and they are, sometimes.
I think aspects of the election proved that without a doubt.

It doesn't help our side to reflexively label all problems with the right as "leftist"....that way the problems never get addressed.

It doesn't help our side to reflexively label all problems with the right as "leftist"....that way the problems never get addressed.

One thing that I have learned via observation is.... there really is no clearly defined "our side".  There are just varying degrees of "in between" vs. the radical left.  Just sayin....

@XenaLee

Well.... I didn't, after all, say that the term is 'never' applied accurately....

now did I.

It is funny how the 'alt-right' was always proud to call themselves that just up to the point it was used against them, then many claim it was a 'left' derived term.

I would say it is about 50/50. Your 4Channer types are still wearing the title with pride, including it on their social media, memes, etc. It is their way of distinguishing themselves from traditional Conservatives. They seem to give no cares how the media uses it.

The only ones I really see concerned about being associated with the term 'alt-right' or who is using it against 'them' are traditional Conservatives who don't want to be associated with their types. However, the 'Alt-Right' monkier was never meant to be for Conservatives, it was to distinguish themselves from it.

Thus "Alt" (Alternative) Right.

They are progressives and contrary to popular belief, progressive does not mean left. Progressivism includes both left and right as a means of progressing past our constitutional "obstacles". The Progressive party was founded by great "conservative Republican" icon, Teddy Roosevelt.

@Cripplecreek

Oh, Lord.  I found a Treehouse article raving about Levin's accusation of anti-Semitism.  The first comment from a member mentioned the "troublemaking Ashkenazi."

The left are absolute masters at redefining words to give them a different meaning than originally intended.  Early in 2016, I had an online debate with a lefty on exactly this issue -- "what do you think of the "Alt-right", and my response was "you need to define exactly who you mean by that", which he of course refused to do.  He just wanted me to condemn them without having to say exactly who I was condemning.

I think the original meaning of the term described a somewhat more populist, more confrontational group of conservatives who wanted to fight against political correctness, and what they perceived as the "go along/get along" mindset of establishment Republicans.  The left attempted to redefine the term to include "white supremacist/anti-gay/racist".  People who previously (and proudly) identified themselves as "Alt-right" but weren't racists objected to it, and that's pretty much been where the battle lines are drawn.   I think some establishment Republicans have pushed that same definition because the "Alt-right", however described, threatened their control of the GOP.  And of course, I'm sure there are some self-described "alt-right" types who are racist.  But certainly not all of them.

I personally never liked the term precisely because it wasn't well defined, and therefore could be characterized as almost anything by either supporters or detractors.  In any case, I think any finger-pointing or condemnation/criticism of the "Alt-right" must necessarily be preceded by agreement on exactly what the term means.  Otherwise, it's all kind of pointless.

*Shrug*  Pass on by, then.

Message boards generally don't operate by the rule that if you disagree with a posted article, you are required to just "pass on by".  At least not in my experience.  Usually, it's a point open for discussion or disagreement.

I think Shapiro unfairly lumps everyone who has ever considered themselves part of the "Alt-right" into the "racist Neanderthal" category.  While that description certainly applies to some people, it certainly doesn't apply to all.  And when you add that to the effort by the media to paint anyone who supports Trump as a member of the "Alt-right", you're then left with "if you support Trump, you're really a racist", which is what I think the goal of the left was all along -- delegitimize any effort to support Trump.

I don't, and never have, considered myself to be a member of the alt-right.  I don't even consider myself a supporter of Trump.  But I know an attempted leftist smear when I see one, and I don't think it helps to have other conservatives accept their characterizations so easily.

So Ben Shapiro is a leftist now too?

@Cripplecreek

No, Ben Shapiro is not a leftist.  He's a conservative who is going with a leftist smear because that particular smear -- the alt-right is racist - matches his own agenda.   And I think he's doing that without realizing that he's giving away more than he likely thinks.  So in that particular context, I'd say he'd fall into a category some might describe as a "useful idiot".  I don't think he's an actual idiot -- but I think that concept is the closest to what is actually happening.

The full leftist smear is basically a syllogism:  1) Trump supporters are the Alt-Right, 2) the alt-right are racists, 3) Trump supporters are racists.  If you don't think the left is pushing that, then you haven't been reading/listening to the same folks I have been.

I certainly think there are many people who self identify as "Alt-right" who are actual racists.  But there also are some self-identified alt-righters -- I know a few -- who are not racist.  And what I particularly dislike about the "racist" label in this context is that the left pushes a ridiculous definition of what it means to be racist.  If you say "All Lives Matter", that's racist.  Want to protect the southern border?  That's racist.  Slow down immigration from the Middle East?  Racist!  Heck, in some instances, just waving an American flag is racist.  The left lumps all those points of view into the same cauldron, and then attach a label of "white supremacy" to it.

I don't think Shapiro is doing that, at least not intentionally, but by going with the "the alt-right is racist" definition, he is actually supporting the screwy leftist definitions, and their efforts to convert all dissent on those issues into "hate speech".

This whole debate is why I don't like using the term at all. It is simply too imprecise, too ill-defined, and there is no gatekeeper to say who is in the "alt-right", and who isn't.

@Cripplecreek

An important distinction, IMO.

The German nazis were progressives and while people want to get bogged down with ignorant arguments about whether they were left or right, the fact is that they were both left and right. They were largely following the earlier American model of progressivism.

The alt right in this country want to follow the Euro right who aren't at all like the familiar right of the english speaking anglosphere. Daniel Hannan has been pretty good at pointing out the differences while refusing to become defensive when he hears someone say the nazis were right wing. He points out that the euro right are ethnocentric socialists who want top down control with their socialism working for their people.

A few years ago a far right party called The Golden Dawn was on the rise in Greece I believe. TOS was ecstatic that this wonderful conservative party was aggressively taking more and more power in Greece. All TOS cared about was that the golden dawn blamed immigrants on welfare for causing the Greek economic disaster. I decided to do some digging and found that the Golden dawn did blame immigrants for their problems but the ultimate blame was laid at the feet of Jewish bankers and the American mercenary military forcing muslims out of their homes. They wanted greater bottom up control of corporations, to destroy the globalism (again zionists). They wanted living wages and pensions regardless of employment, free health care, free college.

@Maj. Bill Martin

Apparently you don't, because it's more than that, though I suppose I understand the temptation to want to believe otherwise.  Ultimately, though, believing the alt-right is just a leftist smear attempt does nothing but give us a false sense of comfort while ignoring reality.

There was no "lumping together" in Shapiro's article.  What he wrote is pretty much what other serious conservative journalists, authors, and sources have written about the nature of the alt-right.  There's lots of reading material if you care to google, or not.  As Jonah Goldberg said, he has twenty years' experience dealing with those types, and Shapiro said the ADL lists him  as their number-one online target.

Dismissing the alt-right as a leftist smear job means ignoring a lot that's right in front of you.  Steve Bannon said that Breitbart is the platform for the alt-right; he and others like him want to burn down conservatism and replace it with a new right.  He said as much.  The alt-right has stated that they oppose the left's moral relativism and identity politics.  Doesn't sound like a leftist conspiracy, does it?

I recently read a letter from a boy in a private Christian high school who said that his fellow students were becoming champions of alt-right politics.  He said they weren't interested in Reagan conservatism because they were angry, and they wanted to blow it all up ("burn it down").  Kind of reminds me of a forum I used to post on.  They still identify as the premier conservative site on the web, but plenty of them post Pepe memes and screech the four letter word that starts with C and rhymes with duck.  They openly defend the alt-right or say they subscribe to its tenets.

That's not a smear job.   That's what's going on with some morons on our side.  Now of course the leftist media will try to use it to every advantage.  But reality is what it is.

The part that is the leftist conspiracy is characterizing anyone who opposes the left's moral relativism and identity politics as racist.  I don't like Steve Bannon at all, but I don't think he's racist either.

Whether Steve Bannon is personally a racist becomes irrelevant when he openly gives them a "platform".  Have you ever seen the comments at Breitbart?

Calm down, Bill.  You can't seem to grasp that racism/race politics/white supremacy/anti-Semitism in different combinations and degrees is the basis of the alt-right philosophy.  Like I said, you can educate yourself on it or not, but that's just the way it is.  Those who decide to embrace the alt-right don't care, or use it as a vehicle to let their own freak flags fly, as at TOS with the strain of anti-Semitism that can now be found there.
