Barnicle Calls Palin a 'Moron'
By Mark Finkelstein | March 10, 2014 | 08:11
Here was the Morning Joe panel bemoaning Ted Cruz's supposed incivility at CPAC in allegedly insulting war hero Bob Dole, when up pops Mike Barnicle to ask "what does it say about CPAC, where the most popular speaker they had, the one who received the most rousing reception is a moron, Sarah Palin?"
A bit later, Mika Brzezinski piled on, calling Palin a "multi-million dollar moron." When Joe Scarborough challenged her, saying "you don't think that, right?", Mika didn't retract her slur, saying only that Palin is "savvy in selling a message that makes a lot of money." View the video after the jump.
Consider the blatant double-standard. MSNBC has spent countless hours decrying Ted Cruz's supposed incivility, but its minions don't hesitate to vilify a conservative in the crudest and most insulting terms.
Note: as we reported here, on Friday Mika claimed that millenials join the military "if they need the money." In the course of saying that Ted Cruz should have promptly apologized for his remark about Dole, Mika this morning mentioned that after her remark about millenials, "I went on Twitter and made an apology."
MIKE BARNICLE: I have a question. The word conservative can mean many things; there's [sic] many definitions to it, but what does it say about about a group, CPAC, where the most popular speaker they had, the one who received the most rousing reception is a moron, Sarah Palin? I mean, she received a reception at that group that took the roof off the place. Sophomoric, nearly libelous, not amusing. What does it say about that group?
. . .
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Barnicle, you need to lighten up. The kids are just having fun, okay?
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: A moron? A multimillion dollar moron selling a message.
SCARBOROUGH: What are you talking about? Stop saying that.
BRZEZINSKI: That the extremes love to gobble up.
SCARBOROUGH: You don't think that. A very smart woman. You think she's a smart woman.
BRZEZINSKI: I think she is savvy in terms of selling a message that makes a lot of money.

This garbage is all they have to say when Obama is golfing on ANOTHER vacation?

Palin is certainly not a moron, but her adaptation of the "Green Eggs and Ham" meme was silly and juvenile. I'm embarrassed for her just watching her do it.
-

Was "Barnacle" talking about Palin, or was he critiquing his own response to her?
-
Was "Barnacle" talking about Palin, or was he critiquing his own response to her?
Either way, he likely stole it (http://www.cnn.com/US/9808/19/barnicle/) from someone else.

I thought it was funny. Sarah has a sense of humor, and isn't afraid to be herself. She knew her audience, and spoke to it.

Well, if she thought that was appropriate for her audience, it doesn't say much for the sensibilities of the audience.
-

Palin also does it because she knows it drives liberals insane: they do not like to be mocked, especially by someone they perceive as far beneath their social station.
But it was silly, and as I wrote yesterday in this space, it confirms my opinion that Palin is a more effective provocateur and communicator of Country Class cultural memes than she would ever be as a Presidential candidate.

Everything she does is juvenile. Yet there is a contingent that seems to go gaga for it. I just don't understand it.

Exactly andy...I totally agree.

Which is why that is what she should be doing. If this is to be a team effort - and it must be if we are to compete with the juggernaut that is team liberalism - then everyone has a different part to play and that means we can't all be president.

It would be interesting to know (I know we can't possibly) how many UIVs were reached by this!

please pardon my ignorance; what's a "UIV"?

Uninformed voter.
My point is that she was not trying to reach people like those who post here when she did this.
-

That's how I see it. We need the young people, and she is the one who can deliver. The audience responded to her, in part, because they had no idea what was coming next. She kept them on their toes. There are many ways to get the message out, and I reckon most people get bored listening to the same thing, speech after speech. She breaks the monotony. I'm not just referring to CPAC, but all the speeches we have heard the past years. Not everyone is keen on listening to politicians speak.
-
Uninformed voter.
I'm not sure they would have found the thing very attractive. Palin is not really going to attract a lot of voters; however, if allowed to do so she can so marvelously piss off the left that they'll make missteps out of rage and frustration. It is important to have that in the toolbox as well as the other tools. It is what she should stick to; she might become a viable candidate again in 8 years or so, but right now she isn't, and I'm not saying that as a slur on her.
-
Palin is certainly not a moron, but her adaptation of the "Green Eggs and Ham" meme was silly and juvenile. I'm embarrassed for her just watching her do it.
It was a parody of a parody within a parody. If you don't get it, you never will.
-
He never will. **nononono*
-
Well, if she thought that was appropriate for her audience, it doesn't say much for the sensibilities of the audience.
From the very first day of CPAC, it was reported that the majority of attendees were people in their twenties.
That makes "Green eggs and ham" certainly appropriate if your goal is to tap the energy of the audience. :patriot:
-
Well, if she thought that was appropriate for her audience, it doesn't say much for the sensibilities of the audience.
One would think the GOP would want their votes, but since they aren't smart enough to be a GOP voter, the TP will be happy to have them. Your comment makes no sense to me. What is wrong with having fun with a speech? It's the dry old man's club that bores the hell out of new voters with their identical messages that don't bear fruit.
-
Humor is humorous only when it's used to bash conservatives, apparently.
-
Let us please remember that nobody watches "Morning Cup with Joe"......or WTF they call it now.
MSNBC's success is dependent on getting noticed by saying stupid and outrageous things about the opposition.
It deserves a big YAWN!

I don't know what speech you were watching, but in the speech I watched she had the audience eating out of her hand.

Of course it was. But only a stoner thinks this was some sort of intellectual exercise.

I didn't watch her speech. Can't take the nasal screeching.
Not surprised they were eating out of her hand. This is the same bunch that just can't wait to get some legal weed.

So you're making my point for me by asserting that the millenials at CPAC are not bored by Green Eggs and Ham, a book for 4 year olds.
-
.....and only somebody that walks around like his got a broom stuck up his a$$ would find the time to ridicule it.
LOL. I know you're a Palin groupie, so I'm sorry if I offended. I'm relieved to see that the consensus here seems to be that Palin is no longer considered presidential material.
-

Since you didn't watch it, you wouldn't notice the young people were clean-cut, and well-groomed. Interest in politics has to start somewhere, and Sarah grabbed their attention. Most will likely be eager to learn more and even get involved. We can't expect people who have never been exposed to politics to know everything, just like none of us were savvy until after years of exposure and interest. Give the young a chance, because they are the future. How many of us were as eager as these young people at that age?
-

Where did you read that...link please?
I just don't understand why this reading of Green Eggs and Ham by Palin bothers you so much...you obviously didn't see it..it was meant to be a joke and was actually funny.
As you know I am not a big fan of Palin but your hatred for her and Cruz surpasses all bounds...
-
LOL. I know you're a Palin groupie, so I'm sorry if I offended. I'm relieved to see that the consensus here seems to be that Palin is no longer considered presidential material.
It's true. I love Sarah Palin. But I'm not a "groupie".
She will never be a candidate for POTUS through the GOP. And that's probably good....just like Cruz' place in the Senate, she's able to do her best rallying the troops.
-

Agree! I like her, and don't consider myself a groupie. I like Cruz and Paul, too. All three are more in line with my beliefs, so what is there not to like? Liking someone does not make them a group, but absolute hatred is questionable.
-

The young people that attend events like CPAC are as far from "never been exposed to politics" as it is possible.
They are virtually ALL intensely interested in politics, educationally and career wise. Many might be staffers for politicians. Or for DC based political activities, profit, non-profit, etc.
My point: They have heard Palin before.

I like Sarah Palin, and I think that criticizing the sound of her voice is stupid.
I LOVE that she aggravates the heck out of the left, and encourage her to do so at every opportunity.
And I don't think she should be President, or even run.
She's found her niche, and is playing her role to perfection.

Wasn't this the conference that overwhelmingly approved the legalization of marijuana?
Palin can do whatever she wants, and her fans will excuse anything she does. I just thought her use of this child's meme was beneath her, though I guess the consensus here is that it wasn't.
Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz are divisive and do nothing to expand the Republican party voter base. Rather, they are driving people out of the party or to the sidelines. I don't hate either one of them, but they do nothing but fire up the choir.
If we want to continue to win elections, we'd better listen to Rand Paul and not Ted Cruz.

Her voice is awful. I've even read that criticism from fans of hers.
She desperately needs a voice coach to teach her some modulation and how to speak from her diaphragm and not through her nose.
Is "aggravating the left" gaining us any additional voters? Somehow I think not.

The $64,000 question. Why does the choir being fired up bother you? No one advocates Palin running and stealing the GOP thunder. Yet she still gets under peoples skin.
and I forgot

It is her vernacular/accent that irritates people because she does not reign from the lower 48. She has a Wisconsin slash folksy drawal. Northerners speak nasaly. It is because she does not tawk like a northeasterner. It took the PUBLIC awhile to accept the southern accent in politics. The media and liberals can't stand the folksy "gotcha" stuff. Down home and apple pie and having babies does not appeal to progressive communists. Her speech in general speaking to an audience- has improved but her folksy manner will never go away. Much like Willy Jeff Clinton.

So.............if she gets a voice coach, will your hostile opinion toward her soften? (As a voice instructor, I'm interested in your opinion).
I have no idea if aggravating the left is gaining any votes, but if you know anything about politics, sinkspur, you know that energizing your base is a very important part of the process.
And Sarah, hate her or not, energizes.
-
Oh, goody. Another Palin thread. I'm going back to the beginning to catch up while I eat my lunch. (3pm and I'm just getting to eat lunch. Being in healthcare ain't like it used to be)

She could look like Quasimodo, and thinking conservatives (like me) would listen to her.
You just gave us an unfortunate look into your priorities, my friend. ^-^

Oh, goody. Another Palin thread.
The world is falling apart at the seams, and the nation is rotting from within, so it's a pleasant diversion to be discussing hating people for the nasal quality of their voices. ^-^

Do you seriously think if she had to rely on her brains, she would have even been considered for the VP nod?
I mean, seriously. I remember being on TOS back when the potential VP choices were being bandied about. Every time her name came up, it was accompanied by a bunch of pictures ogling her. Her looks are an integral part of her appeal; let's not deny that.
-
Palin is 2x more intelligent than 'genius' Barack Obama. Her VP acceptance speech in 2008 was incredible, even more so when it came out the prompter had failed.
Remember all of the flak she took for writing a few words on her hand? A 20 minutes speech with 3 words written on her hand, yet the current President can't get out a complete sentence with stammering unless it's written on a teleprompter.
-

I don't think so. When McCain chose her, no one was enthused about her, even after seeing her. It wasn't until her speech that included "lipstick on a pig" that she began to catch hold. That entire speech was well received by republicans, and put the media in attack mode.
-

Fair enough, but so are everyone's looks. Go back and watch the first televised debate between Nixon and JFK. Nixon ending up coming off as someone untrustworthy because he and his team didn't understand the dynamics of television - particularly how the lights make you look - while JFK's team did.
That being said, Palin is not just a set of legs and, ahem, ______; she has intelligence as well.

No, she has a screechy voice. Some in the Northeast, "New Yawkers", speak like that, nasally. Most women don't notice it because most women have screechy voices. Haven't you noticed that most comedians imitating a woman voice sound the same? It's how most women sound to the male ear.

She was an excellent governor before McCain plucked her out of the job and the liberal media and liberal Democrats went after her......

Sure she's cute. And that's her attraction to the half of conservatives that pay attention to such things.
Otherwise, her speeches are mostly forgettable, repeating prescriptions already presented by others.
Except for the cutesy Seuss rip-off, anything memorable from her on Saturday?
-
The world is falling apart at the seams, and the nation is rotting from within, so it's a pleasant diversion to be discussing hating people for the nasal quality of their voices. ^-^
People that state her voice is annoying, or she is divisive, don't "hate" her. They are merely commenting on qualities she possesses.
Accusing somebody of "hate" in such circumstances sounds childlike, as with adolescent girls--"Amy hates Julie."

But "hate" is a word thrown around very liberally around here. Disagreement-as-hate is a tactic used by the Democrats and, increasingly, by a certain segment of the conservative movement.
It's unseemly.
