TOPLINE President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced hefty tariff hikes on a range of Chinese imports, including on electric vehicles, semiconductors, batteries and steel, part of an election-year effort to protect American industry amid growing fears Beijing is dumping a glut of cheap exports to shore up its own economy.

There will be a new 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles implemented this year, the White House said in a statement, a four-fold increase from the current rate of 25%, as well as a doubling of the 25% levy imposed on solar cells.

Tariffs on lithium batteries for electric vehicles are also set to increase from 7.5% to 25% this year, the statement said, with the levy hike broadening to cover all lithium batteries by 2026.

The White House also announced new tariffs on medical products like respirators and face masks, as well as steel and aluminium products, which will jump from a range of zero to 7.5% to 25% in 2024, as well as a new tariff of 25% for critical minerals, up from zero, and a 50% levy on semiconductors in 2025, double the current rate.

Some $18 billion worth of Chinese goods will be affected by the new rates, the White House said.

Though the move is likely to inflame already tense relations between Beijing and Washington, the White House said the new measures are necessary to curb “China’s unfair trade practices,” particularly China’s rampant “intellectual property theft” and habit of “flooding global markets with artificially low-priced exports.”

The move follows an “in-depth review” on the matter by U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai and measures are “carefully targeted at strategic sectors” where the Biden Administration is making “historic investments,” the White House said.

Cohen says he regrets breaking his 'moral compass' working for Trump
By Ben Kochman

In the last question asked by prosecutors before the lunch break, Michael Cohen said he regrets breaking his "moral compass" with his work for Donald Trump.

"I regret doing things for him that I should not have, lying, bullying people in order to effectuate the goal," he testified.

"I don't regret working for the Trump Organization. As I expressed before, I had some very interesting and great times," he added. "But to keep the loyalty and to do things that he asked me to do, it violated my moral compass and I suffered a penalty, as did my family."

We'll be back with cross-examination at 2:15.

F Carlson Tucker.

1.) Harry Truman was a Democrat - no need for bleeding heart Republican guilt and self-loathing.

2.) The Japanese chose to invade the Philippines and Guam, and to bomb Pearl Harbor - Japan was the agressor.  It was Japan's mistake to start a war they could not finish.

3.) Those two atomic bombs, by convincing the Japanese to surrender sooner, saved millions of American, Allied, and Japanese lives.  A land invasion of the Japanese Home Islands would have been a meat grinder, with the Japanese fighting to the death, maximizing Allied and Japanese casualties.

America needed to do what it did in the moment to protect American lives.

We used to have a Government that worked in the best interest of America and Americans.  Not anymore.

If Ukraine had kept its nukes, the Russians may not have invaded.

Unlikely he agrees with Carlson

I have a family member, now since deceased, who would have been in the first wave; he most definitely did not agree with Carlson.

Elections 2024 / Re: Has America Finally Had It With Joe Biden?
« Last post by Elderberry on Today at 04:51:42 pm »
I'm just amazed that Democrats get any support whatsover and yet they continue to win elections and do well in polling. I think there's a segment of the population who say "i am a democrat" and they vote Democrat.

Quote
The term "yellow dog" derives from the saying, "I'd vote for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democratic ticket." In the 1928 presidential election campaign, yellow dog Democrats were Alabamans who remained loyal to the party even though they did not like the Democratic candidate, Al Smith. Because the expression came generally to be used to describe loyal Southern Democrats, it also frequently had a somewhat moderate to conservative connotation, as if referring to "old school" Democrats.

Biden Gets Pro-Life Advocate Lauren Handy Thrown in Prison for 57 Months for Protesting Abortion
National   |   Steven Ertelt   |   May 14, 2024   |   11:03AM   |   Washington, DC

Thanks to Joe Biden’s politicized Justice Department, a pro-life advocate will spend the next five years in a federal prison for protesting abortion.

If Lauren Handy was an environmental activist or a leftist supporting Hamas, her sit-in at an abortion business would have earned her a misdemeanor charge and maybe a small fine. But because she is a pro-life advocate protesting abortion, the Biden administration used the FACE Act to prosecute her for supposedly blocking access to abortion.

Even though the law, which abrogates the free speech rights of pro-life Americans, has rarely been used, the Biden administration pushed for putting several pro-life advocates in prison for over a decade for protesting abortion. Biden officials misused the law to push for the highest penalties, reserved for violent and criminal behavior, to prosecute peaceful pro-life Americans who merely exercised their free speech rights.

Today, Biden got what he wished for as Handy has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison and three years probation under the FACE Act for peaceful civil disobedience. Another pro-life advocate who participated in the protest, John Hinshaw, was sentenced for 21 months and will get credit for 9 months served.

Handy, a Catholic, is a well-known pro-life voice on the political left. She was the primary organizer and leader of the peaceful protest sponsored by  Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising that led to the ongoing court cases.

In a statement before the ruling, Handy shed some perspective on being jailed for her pro-life activism.

“It has been close to 9 months since I was abruptly ripped from my community. This has led me to think long and hard on what to say about my sentencing today in federal court. Some drafts were angry and righteous while most were just a tearstained longing for my loved ones back home. Yes, this time has been challenging but I refuse to be jaded. Why? Because life goes on… even in jail. So I might as well continue to love and cry and scream and dance. That is joy. The feeling of being fully alive without shame. Which is something no court can take from me. So today, I am at peace with myself and my future. I will go into court with my head held high and my heart open.”

PAAU condmned the ruling today, telling LifeNews that Handy has been wrongly sentenced to 4 years &  9 months in federal prison for an act of peaceful civil disobedience to prevent federal crimes such as partial birth abortion and infanticide.
