Title: Heads Up on Artic Blast Early Next Week
Post by: catfish1957 on January 09, 2024, 05:39:01 pm
Recent Model Runs are showing that the middle of country is going to be in the deep freeze very late this week, going int early next week.  Even down to the Gulf Coast. On the GFS at the 120 hour point they are progosticating  a 1052Mb High right at the Canadian/Montana border.   That is atm pressure of 31.06 Mercury.  A Big one.

Followed by a second similar one at the 210 hour point.  About 8 days from now.  Front Range and Upper plains? I am hearing maybe in the -20 to -30 a poossibility.   With zero down to about a line from the TX/OK panhanle- MO/AR borders.  Gulf coast might be in the teens.  Agian this is just a modeled forecast, but right now I have a pretty good idea things are about to really get chill.  Bundle up and prepare accordingly.

I have been watching this. They had expected lows in the minus for the weekend (-10) but have raised it to around +10 now. The ten day is midteen low average and mid twenties highs.

Weather for next week.

I just received this from my friend who works for the National Weather Service in Houston. Plan accordingly.

You've probably heard the TV forecasters talking about an Arctic outbreak that will be heading our way and some additional details are becoming available in the various forecast models.

Currently, most of the models have the cold front reaching southeast Texas by late Sunday/early Monday and open the door for an Arctic airmass to spill southward. The 0000Z European ECMWF model has our temperature locally falling to the 29-30 degree range by Sunday afternoon and is forecasting lows of 21-23 Monday, 11-12 Tuesday, and 24-25 Wednesday before southerly winds and a rapid warmup begin. The ECMWF also wants to bring some freezing precipitation through late on Monday.

The 0000Z Canadian GEM is a little slower with frontal arrival but also somewhat colder. It is forecasting a Sunday afternoon low in the 50s but has temperatures bottoming out in the 18-21 range Monday and to a bone chilling 8-9 Tuesday before rising to a balmy 10 or so Wednesday. The GEM's warmup doesn't really kick in until Thursday. The GEM is also forecasting some freezing precip getting close but has it further to our east.

The 12Z American GFS is still running but its 0000Z output, while still showing very cold temperatures and a hard freeze n the Monday-Wednesday period, was marginally warmer than the ECMWF and GEM. The 0000Z GFS wasn't forecasting any frozen precip for our area and realistically it is still too early to take a definitive position.

At this point in time, the safest forecast is to say we are looking at a hard freeze next week and preparations need to be made before the cold air gets here.

This morning's graphic from the HGX forecast office is included below.

You hate to go thru it, but the brutal cold not only keeps critters some of you all have down there, it also heaves the ground to make an excellent soil bed for growing in the spring.

We have a cold snap in progress here in the Mojave Desert.  Got below +40 several night now, avoiding a hard freeze.

For us this is cold.  Any time below 40 is too damned cold.  I moved to the Mojave to get out of this crap.  Give me my 120F Summer days back!

We are under a tornado watch until 9pm tonight.  Coastal flooding is possible of 1-2 ft. Wind gusts right now of 50mph. Cold front to then move in. DeSantis has called a state of emergency in quite a few counties. We've never experienced weather likes this, this time of year and we've been down here 30 years.

Supposed to have a high of 14 degrees here next week.
I bet my kids will be happy that I got them wool socks and gloves for Christmas.

We are getting heavy snow with a 20 mph wind right now. The snow is supposed to stop soon, but it is a mess out there now.

Yeah, drifting like all get-out!  I may have lived in AZ for better than 40 years, but I lived in Michigan before getting smarts and getting the heck outta there!

We have had a very mild winter up until this point, but we’re supposed to go through a weeklong cold snap starting after this weekend

The issue is the lack of snow. Last year we ended the winter with record snowfall. There’s only about 6 inches of snow on the ground right now.

But it looks like it warms up again after that

Looking at the GFS, the Arctic blast seems to be coming on cue, at abut 1050ish Mb clip.  What I am seeing freaky now is this expected  972 Mb low forming and deepening in Mo, creeping up the Ohio River Valley into the Great Lakes.  I am guessing we are going to see some pretty impressive snow totals in those areas.  Midwest blizzards ?  Good chance I am guessing

They are talking about 10" here in the Florida of Iowa, and some butt spankin' cold for several days after that.

eh... hard saying how much snow... It's sandy and blowing hard. There's only 3" on the truck, but in wind, that don't mean much... zero right now, and windy. 16 below by tonight, nearly 30 below the next night... Seems like below zero till about Tuesday... so not so long... But with little snow on the ground, this is going to drive frost like a sledge hammer, and it feels pretty bitter - usually there would be 3
' of snow between me and all that cold. Not true this year.

We got 6 a couple of days ago, so now's the pile on. In some ways I wish we would have gotten the cold before the snow because of all it's ground heaving and bug killing properties. Keep those nasty critters down south where they belong.  :0001:

The comedy part is the youngins who haven't dealt with this much. They're like 'WTH is this crap?' and the older ones are like 'WINTER! Which we had nearly every %&*#^~! year growing up!'

I'm trying to figure the last time we went hard below zero... It's been a while, but not that long... A couple years ago I was in a hot tent up above Dickey Lake, and it was under 10 below then. But it's been a while. Hard on folks living up in the woods right now

Not really understanding all the technical talk, but seems like my hope of an inaccurate forecast here in NE TX is dashed. I think I'll move some more wood inside. My propane tank is on 60 per cent. I guess I'll see how efficient it really is.

As always, my heart goes out to all in the far northern areas. Stay safe.

I don't like this. You can really  fall and do damage once you hit a certain age

I would rather have snow. We haven't had snow since 2020

Buy you a good pair of mukluks, snow packs, or snow boots. You wear them big, for extra socks... and they come big to accommodate the thick insulation. but that adds another feature - the tread is also much wider, which provides a great deal more sure-footedness.

Now, nothing 'ladies', stylish, or thin... This is a working boot that any rural northern gal will own.

It’s a balmy -9 right now. Gonna be cold for a while.
First calf was born on the farm yesterday. Wasn’t expected this early, but it’s doing well so far.

Yes, I am interested in the temperatures being so low, everywhere but where you and I live.  We have low temperatures here, too, but here in my part of the Mojave Desert it hasn't gotten down to freezing.  And no precipitation so far this year.

We lived one winter season in SoCal ---- and it was kinda fun --- it had a real vacay feel to it.  Yet, I just couldn't fight the urge to throw a few pairs of thick socks and a couple of scarfs into the earthquake preparedness kit.   888blackhat

You can never go wrong with warm socks and a scarf, there are times when a stiff wind(for us) of 20 or 25 mph makes them welcome

I have been through a few bad quakes, fortunately not at an epicenter like Northridge and the only places that absolutely scare me of being at during a bad one is in my car under an overpass or in a concrete parking structure and outside of a high rise with lots of glass windows **nononono*

I noticed that in SoCal, people tend not to go under overpasses right away.  They wait for a clear spot on the other side.  When my wife pointed it out, I thought it would be a good practice.  Bets are off when a bunch of NooBs decide that's a great time to cut you off.

Nothing worse than ice and burst water pipes.  If you lose heat, you may want to shut off the water and open the spigots to keep frozen water from bursting your pipes.

You don't get it... Like a Husky, I BELONG here. I LOVE 30 below... I'm just itchin to get out in it... That's the difference this year.

Far better to have redundant sources of heat, and be capable of at least short term power generation, as the whole rural north knows well

Had a good friend whose sister and her children were dragged by her husband to Ohio just in time for the worst winter in a very long time, as a matter of fact I think they called the blizzard of 1978 the storm of the century. Anyway it also blew up their marriage, you just don't take a SoCal girl into a situation like that and expect her to adapt.

We have my wife's childhood home up near there.  This SE Texan endured his first and last blizzard up there in '13-'14.  Not going to happen again.

Darn shame that that perfect climate is in the hands of a sociopath like Noisome.
He's just the head sociopath, we have a whole slew of like minded sociopaths running our once fair state. I often dream of all the democrats including Noisome and Lt. Gov in session in Sacramento and Capitol sized SMOD punctuating them out of existence.............Does that make me a bad persson?

Lived in St. Louis at the time. It was brutal!

I was a college student in Michigan for that.  My college closed for the better part of a week, and they had never closed before that, ever.  I worked at a college radio station, and I skied to work.

No cars on the road to skitch behind.

I had Cross Country skis.  They were ideal in the city of Kalamazoo.

-31 last night, -66 with the wind chill. Not just here either... Points east of the hump too.

In case y'all don't get how cold that is, my kid, who is more prepared than any of us, lost power at 1 am, in the height of it.

Jenny wouldn't start.
Propane dried up because at that cold, it contracts enough in the can that it's minimal pressure is defeated.
Truck wouldn't start.

Just all done. All his preps for nothing.

Luckily the power came back on in 3 hrs, And all he had to deal with was a frozen wellhouse.

Lessons.

@roamer_1 Below -43 deg. F propane will remain liquid forever. No vaporization at all.

Back in the old days all of us rural southern folk had Butane tanks buried in the ground because butane does the same thing propane does but at +33Deg F.  Now they have learned how to turn Butane into gasoline, and everyone had to switch to propane. (Every once in a while I run across an old, above ground, Butane tank that has, or once had, a vaporizer built in. They used an open flame to vaporize the butane.  YIKES!)

I went away from butane long ago - It's worse than propane in the cold, so I stepped off from butane for camp heat and stoves and lanterns. But yeah, in extreme cold, propane will stop working. Either keep a bottle inside with you, or make sure it's buried deep. So I have life-long eschewed propane too in camp, untill recently with the advent of Buddy Heaters.

Old lessons come back to bite... because the boy's buddy heaters wouldn't pop on, no matter what

The ONLY thing that starts in 30 below is a match... Wood works, no matter what.

I didn't know that (the specific temperatures). So I assume that a buried propane tank pretty much works anywhere where there is civilization.

That brought back memories of a sort.  I was young enough during the '78 blizzard to think it all just great fun and a wonderful LOOOOOOOOONG school break.

However, in January 1994, I had been married about 6 weeks. The weathermen were predicting a wintry mix followed by a few inches of snow. The wintry mix came through well enough and dropped a solid layer of ice over everything, and then we had an episode of thundersnow overnight that dropped 15-18 inches of snow in the metro area and 20 inches at my house just a little farther out, followed by temperatures in the 20 below range for a few days. Pretty much the entire city of Louisville shut down for most of a week.  I'm the "let's stay in and watch movies and stay safe and warm" sort, and my husband was the "let's drive around and see how crazy it is everywhere" sort.  It was a trial by fire .... errrrr, snow .... but our fledgling marriage managed to survive.

I  would like to take a moment here....

We talk a lot about the weather here, and we drop a lot of jests about how hot or cold we have it.  I've gotten my share in!

We are seeing a brutal cold coming in in most of the country right now and it has us all so worried about our dear friends. Worried enough to all of us to express prayers and love to keep us all safe.

Some of us are lucky because we are in the small corner of our country that is spared from the cold temperatures. From those of us, I want to offer Prayers for my TBR family in the teeth of this.  I am so lucky.   We joke at how I get such high temperatures (120F), but I love the heat!  I would never trade.  That said, I am in fear for my dear friends that they be spared the wrath!

May God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost spare us all in this.  May all of us see each other in the week ahead.

Amen!

Watch out for carbon monoxide. That stuff will kill you and you will not see or smell anything. Suddenly, out of nowhere, you're dead.

Yep, here we go. For me, it is hitting tonight and through next week. It is odd to wake up and get a temperature in the morning and then see the temp go down during the day. The day is 'supposed' to warm up, not get colder.

The Independent, 2000:
This was 24 years ago.

Snow is starting to disappear from our lives. Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters – which scientists are attributing to global climate change – produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries … Global warming, the heating of the atmosphere by increased amounts of industrial gases, is now accepted as a reality by the international community … According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event". "Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

Stand by for icy blasts and heavy snow

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/blogs/tim-blair/children-just-arent-going-to-know-what-snow-is/news-story/5a16c85680b7cc94f345240a727fb09d

Do you get it? Everybody understands? The Global Warming freaks say no more cold weather, ever. And no more snow.

This showcases why elections matter.  While in power in Alberta for only four years out of the last half century, Canadian leftists were able to inflict such a severe and long-lasting impact on the average Albertan.  Notley should be given hard prison time for any Albertan who freezes to death because of rolling blackouts.

Very seriously. Nothing to mess with, I know of a young lady who died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning just using a Coleman Lantern to warm her tent--in Sturgis one August.

Burning charcoal can be a killer, and it produces high levels of CO.
Propane, burned with a catalytic heater, produces less, but ventilation is needed to keep levels of CO from becoming dangerous. (Ice fishermen using tents or 'ice houses' just keep the temp warm enough for their cold weather gear to be comfortable, with constant ventilation.)

Quote
The EPA recommends that indoor CO levels should not exceed 9 parts per million (ppm) for more than 8 hours, or 35 ppm for more than 1 hour.

Yep. Spending a couple weeks with the Folks, where I grew up, I was appalled at the rate of decay of wood and steel. The former succumbs to a remarkable assortment of fungi and insects we don't have here in North Dakota. Any papers from my youth and books are generally placed in cold storage for a winter or two before being brought in the house, just to assure the death of all those nasty little critters that would doom my library to destruction or total fumigation.

The latter is destroyed thanks to high humidity and salt in the air...again, at an appalling rate.

Ohh... I was thinking hippies.
Das is vahr.
We will never know and will never be told the number of homeless who die this winter. The government will never tell us the truth. Most cities have a crew which trolls around the city looking for dead bodies. They will be busy this week.

Man ... I look out my door and I know nobody is going to survive out there. Some will seek shelter. But the mentally deranged, the drug addicts, the alcoholics, they will stay outside until they die.

You are correct. The cold does kind of 'wipe the slate' when it comes to feral hippies in the wild. But we will never hear about it. It is too sensitive a subject for the common people.
