Why did the Secret Service try to keep Vocativ from filming the first lady out for a morning walk on a busy road?

Vocativ was on Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend to film a piece about the African-American community on the island. While we were shooting on Beach Road, one of the busiest thoroughfares on the Vineyard, the Secret Service approached and asked us to switch off our camera for 15 minutes.

Michelle Shuts Down the Press

I can understand why reporters might not be permitted to film the wife of a Third World dictator were she out on a public street.
Third World dictators are, after all, dictators, and they get to do exactly as they please. If the wife of the Emir of Whatever strolls out of the palace, she does so with an armed retinue that will avail themselves of their natural right to bully citizens who might want a photo of her highness.
Because ruler and ruled is the social contract they got going there!
Here in the United States, the social contract in force is that WE ARE ALL EQUAL UNDER THE LAW. And someone needs to alert Mrs. Obama, whose Secret Service detail strong armed reporters trying to get some video of her power walking on a public street, saying she needed to have a “private moment.”

While we were shooting on Beach Road, one of the busiest thoroughfares on the Vineyard, the Secret Service approached and asked us to switch off our camera for 15 minutes.
A moment later, first lady Michelle Obama power walked by our crew. She was out for some exercise with a small group—and a serious security detail. It was 9:30 in the morning.
Our producer and cameraman were surrounded by Secret Service agents andvery strongly advised to stop filming. At one point, Mrs. Obama looked in their direction and said, “Don’t do that.” It’s unclear if she was telling the agents to leave us alone, or scolding us for filming on public property.
Now, an exception to the social contract is that we do allow our rulers’ Praetorian Guard to mess with the public a bit if it’s necessary to protect their lives from the odd lunatic who might pop up. BUT NOT IN ORDER TO GIVE THEM A PRIVATE MOMENT.
If Michelle wanted a private moment, she could have taken it on the estate she rented for her vacation. That an armed federal security officer was bullying reporters trying to photograph the first lady in a public place is an unadulterated outrage. It is a violation of our basic principles
Mrs. Obama liked to ask during the campaign “Who are we?”
Apparently, not a free country.

By accident, a photographer with Vocativ happened upon a power-walking Michelle Obama in Martha’s Vineyard during her family’s never-ending vacation. Then, on her order, that photographer was swarmed by people identified as Secret Service agents.
This is hardly the first time Michelle has abused her power to shut down the press. It wasn’t long ago that she forced a publication from printing photos of Malia Obama at a restaurant.
Watch (above) as one angry agent says, “Come on, really? Sir, she’s having a private moment right now.” Then, another agent did everything he could to block the shot, even as he was admitting he didn’t have the authority to actually prevent the filming… and could only limit distance.
As you can see from her body language, Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the recording.
No wonder the New York Times has called the Obama Administration’s image control “Orwellian.”
Why should Michelle have the ability to shut down the press? There is a reason why the media is expressly mentioned in the 1st Amendment, but Michelle doesn’t care.
