What do you really want to know about concealed carry?
I apologize if I sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that everyone reading this column has the same level of interest in concealed carry as I do. I’ve been doing this for a long time. When I say that, I mean not only have I been carrying a gun for a long time, but I have also been studying, reading about and training to improve my skills every single day. It’s easy to do when it is part of your job. As a result, I sometimes slip into that place where I’m just talking away about recoil spring tension, active or passive weapon retention or muzzle velocity and bullet grain weight and forget that not everyone knows or cares about those nuances of concealed carry. So, let’s get back to the basics for a minute.
What do you need and when can you use it?
For effective concealed carry, you NEED — I mean really need — a couple things. First up is a gun, of course. But what kind of gun is best? If you are working with a firearms trainer who says you must have a Glock or you must have a 1911 or you must have a revolver, please walk away from that person and seek competent instruction.
What you must have is a reliable handgun that is comfortable in your hand and is of a size and weight that allows you to carry it comfortably all day, every day. Finding such a gun is a matter of trial and error. We at Concealed Carry Magazine can guide you with accurate and objective information about different firearms, but we cannot and will not tell you what you must have. Do some research, then go to a gun store or gun show and put your hands on several different guns. See which one feels just right in your hand. When you find something that feels right, go to a range that allows you to rent handguns and try that gun and a few different guns to see how they feel as you fire them.
If you find one you like, stick with it. But keep trying others. If you find one you like better, sell the first gun and buy a different gun. The, make, model and caliber doesn’t matter so much. What matters is that you are comfortable carrying and shooting the gun and that it goes bang every time you pull the trigger.
You will also need a holster. Please do not carry your gun without a holster. Your holster should securely hold your gun in place and cover the trigger and trigger guard to keep anything from getting in there. Even if you choose off-body carry, like a purse or briefcase, please buy a holster that holds your gun securely inside your chosen mechanism of carry.
Next up is ammo. For self-defense, buy hollow-point ammo from a reputable source. You are not buying hollow-points to “do more damage.” You are buying hollow-points to reduce the chance of pass-through shots. So, in reality, you are choosing ammo that does less damage, because you are only damaging the bad guy you are shooting at — not anything else if the bullet happens to pass through the bad guy. We will, of course, talk more about target isolation as it applies to defensive shooting, but know right now that you want to keep all your bullets inside the bad guy and hollow-points work best for that.
So there you have it: the true basics of a concealed carry kit. These tools, combined with good training and a proper mindset, will get you started.
Concealed carry is complicated enough; let’s start by keeping it simple and then move deeper into the weeds as you get more comfortable carrying your gun every day.
Stay safe. Train hard.

Not including the weapons permanently attached to me?
Enough. I carry enough. :tongue2:
-
Exactly. I carry what I think I need to carry.
-
At the same time? Only 2.
-
Legally only?
-
Gibbs' rule no. 9. Always, usually two or three.

Hold on now... Are we only talking guns here?
'Weapons' is a fairly broad category.

I counted one of my 2 carry knives as a weapon, as well as my handgun. I didn't count my pocket knife.

Sorry, my entire arsenal fell into the Toledo Bend Reservoir on September 9,2010.
Freak accident.

So big folders on up through straight blades? EDC?
Then 4, I suppose, depending on if a multitool is considered... 6 in the winter.

A multitool could be used, but I wouldn't count it. That would open it up to scissors, Kleins, and hammers and such.

None of your damned business.

:silly: This is timely! The texts with my husband last night (he was on shift):
Me: OMG! Kimber just came out with a rose gold .380!
Husband: How much?
Me: You can't put a price on your family's safety.
Husband: Yes I can. How much?
Me: You can't put a price on love.
Husband: Yes I can. How much?
Me: You can't put a price on the fact that every single time you've suggested a gun and/or ammo purchase I've told you yes and reminded you that you never even need to discuss those purchases with me.
Husband: How much?
:silly: :silly: :silly:

Well, if I am wearing my nail bags, or my go bag, that's a whole nuther story.
Kleins... LOL!... Carpenter, or electrician?

One of those fencing pliers designed to pull staples could make a mark ajax wouldn't take off....I know you know the type.

I only wish I had a woman that wanted a .380... rose gold or otherwise...
All mine seemed to like shiny rocks for some reason...

Oh yeah... I know all about fencing pliers...
Kleins around here tend to be gigantic lineman's pliers... 'Throw me your Kleins' is understood by Carpenters mostly, and electricians (but not plumbers)... Go figger...

Electrician
HA! I knew it!

If I'm wearing my old nail bag it'll have my sheetrock hammer hanging on it. Then Look Out! I actually got fired once for besting my boss throwing hole saws for money.

Get 'em really big ones. They work, too. (Cain smote Abel with a.....rock!)
I have quite a few I have brought in from the cold and tamed. I have to keep them away from where I generally sit to watch teevee, though or they might sense my aggravation and attack it.
-
I lost them all in a boating accident.

About where? Just curious. I know several of my ex commercial diver buddies would enjoy the challenge of the hunt.

Oh I like my bling, too. Our kids, eight, five, and three, never had formula. I'm trying to parlay that savings into diamond earrings. Going with the price of organic formula, I could get a karat on each ear, easy. :silly: :silly: :silly:

LOL! Nah... never worked on my ex.. I brought her over a 2T truck full of rocks I couldn't even move by myself...
Somehow, if they ain't shiny rocks...

@roamer_1
You are correct - I carry three weapons, one is a firearm.
-
I rarely carry a firearm at home.

It's really hard to say, because it depends so much on where I am going and the time of year. Just wearing a coat ups it by 2... Once the muks go on, there's another 1, or cowboy boots...there's another 1 .. If it's winter time, I am likely to be wearing a neck knife, just because it is easy to get at...
So EDC doesn't work for me really... but yeah... generally one or two guns, and a whole wad of cutlery. Not really weapons oriented, just part of doing.
Does the truck count?
-
I rarely carry a firearm at home.
Me neither... but there is generally one hanging close by... And I slept with a .45 next to my head for so long that I generally won't sleep without one right there... Not that I will need it (fairly slim chance on that at home) Just used to it.
-

As long as they are purty, just wet 'em down. They'll shine, like as not.
-
Does the truck count?
Depends on how you use it. Lots of stuff like that...in a pinch, it'll git 'er done.
-
One more than you think I carry.
-
Usually just a mouse gun (.380) most the time. My pocketknife is basically useless in a fight (Case Hawkbill, good for trimming wire).
-
Depends on how you use it. Lots of stuff like that...in a pinch, it'll git 'er done.
Well, there's a point in that, for sure... but I was more concerned with what's IN the truck than the truck itself...

Got a really good deal on a Sig P238 for my wife for Mother's Day. It compliments her .357 quite nicely.

Ya but, does she have a sister?
-
I own a Ruger SR9c, which with the compact handle makes a nifty concealed carry weapon. I bought it for that reason, but I never have carried it. I figure I made it to age 64 without ever needing a concealed weapon, so odds are I do not need one now. I would not hesitate to carry it if I felt the need, howver, and I am definitely of a mind that I am safer in a crowd where there might be some people carrying concealed weapons than one that is supposedly "gun-free."
-
I only carry one at a time but I rotate between a Shield, a XDs, a M&P 2.0, all in 9mm, and if I pocket carry an LCP in .380. The wife also carrys ...a Glock 43 9mm. We shoot a lot and group nicely, and often compete with each other testing the Shield vs Glock, etc.
-
None. I'd really like a small pink one too.
Dang it, I'm such a girly girl.
-
I got my .380 (S&W) around 17 years ago, and would like to get something lighter weight. Lightweight and cute would be the icing on the cake.

Alright, @starstruck - hand in your man card. You just admitted to shining your power tools, instead of letting them look hard used. ****slapping

I only carry a .380 when I'm running I have a small one weighs less than a pound that fits in my fanny pack nicely It's useful for snakes, 4legged and 2legged predators on the running trails.... any other time I carry my .40 But shiny rocks are OK too!
-

I think you could have done better than trade your wife for a Sig P238, but then I don't know her. Some days I think my husband might take the same trade. :tongue2:

Nothing wrong with an equal balance of the two, but if I had to choose I've said my next gun is a longer barrelled .357 revolver.

OMG!!! I didn't think of how that would come across until you said that!
Wouldn't trade her for a P238...maybe one of those $3K Kimber 1911's or a CMP Colt 1911... :smokin:

Speaking of tiny guns...the wife of one of the RSO's at the range here on Ft. Knox was actually practicing with one of those Bond Arms .22 magnum derringers the other day.
First time I'd seen one put to use and not just in a display case.

I have one of those chambered for .45/.410. They're cool little guns, I don't know if all of them are interchangeable, but you can buy different barrels for different calibers.

I enjoy buying tools, and "dangerous" stuff, but I haven't gotten into guns yet. Maybe it's because I live in MA or maybe it's because I haven't felt the need to buy a gun yet? They're not really cheap.

My newfound obsession is a recent one...and thankfully my wife shares it with me. There were two factors that forced us to wait until now to take up shooting...two severely AD/HD kids and the fact we were living in Europe for the last 6.5 years.
I grew up around guns as my dad my uncles and my grandfather were all hunters. 19 years in the military has exposed me to them as well.
But I know for me and my wife we enjoy going out to the range and shooting and working on our accuracy stuff like that. It's allowed me to put years of learning how to shoot via the Army to use instructing her and our son.
I call my range time "range therapy" LOL! It's just fun and relaxing for me to go to the range.
The other side tot hat coin is that we are living in an increasingly more dangerous world. Liberal policies on everything from illegal immigration to releasing felons to allowing practitioners of Radical Islam to freely roam our country has ramifications of the most deadly kind every time you turn on the tv.
And the sad fact of the matter is if we don't take the defense of our families and our property into our own hands in the 21st century...it's likely no one will. Even living on a military installation is no guarantee of safety...all of the on post housing is now run across the DoD by private rental/property companies...and they are allowed to let civilians rent the unused housing inside the gate.

I've learned. My lookout now is for gals that like feathers, turquoise and silver... And guns... And guitars... And that understand camping to be on the ground, under a flown tarp... And that know a hush puppy ain't a shoe. Like I shoulda done all along...

Ugh, had to pull mine out this afternoon after the little one found a coral snake at our front door. Unfortunately the thing got away before I could get my boots on and get back out there.

My 1911 is in a custom leather sort of horizontal rocker draw... cross-draw... hangs above my left leg front at about 40 degrees, and rocks on a set of stops to get out of the way if I crouch down.
I just got a new go-bag:

Pay attention to the way a rifle scabbard is incorporated.
I have two wide-mouth custom leather scabbards underway - one for my 45-70 or 30-30, and another for my sawed-off 12ga... And I ordered the long scabbard from them that will hold any 30.06, 7mm mag, or 300win mag, depending on what I happen to be carrying.

Yep.
And people often ask why I didnt like the Alien, which is also comfortable. On me they were difficult to re-holster because it would collapse a bit. I want to be able to re-holster with ease.

Sometimes it's just as important to be able to put it away fast as take it out.
