Conservative Hugh Hewitt to vote for ‘authentic’ Bernie Sanders in Democratic primary

Valerie Richardson

Conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt surprised viewers Sunday by announcing that he was voting this week in the Democratic presidential primary — for Bernie Sanders.

The radio host and author of books like “Painting the Map Red: The Fight to Create a Permanent Republican Majority” said he planned to take advantage of Virginia’s early voting and open primary systems by casting his ballot for the Vermont socialist.

“I’m voting this week. And because it’s Virginia, I get to vote in the Democratic primary. I’m voting for Bernie Sanders,” said Mr. Hewitt on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And I think a lot of people will because he’s authentic.”

Does that mean he would support Mr. Sanders over President Trump in the 2020 general election? “No. I’m going to vote for Donald Trump,” Mr. Hewitt said.

Good for Hewitt.  Bernie probably would be one of the easier candidates for Trump to beat, so any movement to get Republicans in open primary states to vote for Bernie is helpful.

Well, I have mixed feelings about voting for Sanders in the primary.

Democrats are perfectly capable of screwing up on their own.  They don't need our help.  I recall a good number of members on TOS that cast votes for Obama in the 2008 primary.

Personally, I think Biden or Warren would be easier to beat than Sanders, but I will leave it to radical left wing nutjobs to give us the most unpalatable candidate.

That is why I'm going to do a hard pass on voting in the Dem primary. They will eat their own, plus Bernie supporters will not vote for Biden.

Agreed. Sanders might be easier to beat, but if he wins over Trump in the general election , as doubtful as it is, he would be worse for the country than either Biden or Warren.
I always vote for what I think is best for the country. I've truly regretted some of my past votes in the GE, and I certainly wouldn't want to think I helped an anti-American nutter like Sanders to get elected president.

I seem to recall Republicans doing the same thing with Obama when Hillary was running in 2008... Becareful what you vote for...

If things stay as they are now, I'm leaning toward Sanders too. But if Biden implodes before then the picture could be a lot different. I have no regrets in voting for the lazy, dimwitted 0bama over the megalomaniac Clinton. No offense but you people who think that was a mistake have no idea what havoc Clinton would have wrought with a filibuster-proof Congress.

I don't even see a Sanders victory as being that bad. It would crush the economy, keeping the dems so busy with damage control that they wouldn't get much else done, and result in a massive backlash in 2022, then quite possibly another impeachment now that the bar is height is measured in Planck lengths. Sanders isn't a democrat and wouldn't command much loyalty from Congressional dems so whomever he picks for VP will be preferable to them.
