Commissioners with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority have approved a 50-year lease for a project that will support a crude oil export terminal capable of serving some of the largest tankers in the world.

During a special Thursday afternoon meeting, commissioners voted to approve a 50-year lease for Lone Star Ports LLC to develop a crude oil export terminal on Harbor Island near Port Aransas.

Headquartered in Corpus Christi, the company is owned by the Washington, D.C.-based private investment firm The Carlyle Group, the port's partner in developing a crude oil export terminal capable of support Very Large Crude Carriers, or VLCCs.

Among the largest ships in the world, VLCCs can carry up to million barrels of crude oil in a single shipment. Lone Star Ports is expected to pay more than $2 billion dollars over the life of the lease, Port of Corpus Christi CEO Sean Strawbridge told the Houston Chronicle....
