What is actually known about hydroxychloroquine, the medication that Trump is fixated on recommending for COVID-19?

It is one of three (two 'drugs' and one supplement) used in a cocktail with success.

Also important are the Azithromycin and Zinc Sulfate.

Hydroxychloroquine provides the pathway for the Zinc ions to transit the cell membrane, the zinc stops viral replication and takeover of the cell. Azithromycin provides some immunosuppression to avoid cytokine storm and lung damage from that, as well as acting to safeguard against opportunistic bacterial infection.

Right. One of the first reports on the effectiveness came from CHINA.

I've read a couple of different things and haven't researched this, but according to some, the incidence of this virus is low in countries where people are or have been treated for malaria compared to countries that have no malaria.
