China rocket debris falling toward Earth this weekend; point of impact still unknown
100-foot-long rocket core is expected to make an uncontrolled re-entry in a matter of hours

The core of China's Long March 5B rocket is predicted to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere in a matter of hours, but scientists and government agencies still cannot pinpoint the point of impact.
Core, or first-stage, rockets normally don't go into orbit like the Long March 5B, instead making a controlled re-entry shortly after launch.
However, this rocket -- launched to carry a module for China's first permanent space station on April 28 -- was not designed with safeguards that would help steer the spacecraft away from land or villages off of Africa's Ivory Coast, where more "shrapnel" from a Long March 5B rocket crashed last May.
Photos posted to social media showed the long, javelin-like metal poles that damaged buildings, miraculously missing residents.

Amen! They should be treated like a pariah. Civilized nations should refuse to do business with them. Instead we're racing to offshore every last bit of manufacturing to them, sharing dangerous technology with them, and funding their efforts to create dangerous viruses. Truly we are a nation of dumbasses.

Sumthin' tells me that we have the technology that could possibly shoot down this debris, but that "technology" is still hush-hush and to use it would reveal more about it than the government wants us to know about such things... ;)

It isn't under power. It is coming down period in the path its momentum is carrying it. The only thing shooting at it might do is break into smaller pieces but that isn't overly likely. If the pieces are heavy/strong enough to survive reentry then they will probably stay intact anyway. Also, if you hit it with something and a piece lands somewhere heavily populated then you become responsible for it by potentially altering it course. Currently it is all on China.

No one got squashed? Well, that's a relief. TBH, I was kind of hoping it landed on the presidential palace in Nanjing. Would serve them right.
