Ever-eloquent Mario Cuomo, a son of Queens who rode his rhetorical gifts to three terms as New York governor and tantalized Democrats by flirting with a run for President, died Thursday, two sources close to the family said. He was 82.

Cuomo passed away six hours after his oldest son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was sworn-in to a second term in Manhattan.

"He couldn't be here physically today ... but my father is in this room," Andrew Cuomo said in his inaugural address. "He's in the heart and mind of every person who is here. His inspiration and his legacy and his spirit is what has brought this day to this point."

As governor, Mario Cuomo wrestled with two recessions and presided over a massive expansion of the state prison system. A liberal, he bucked the political winds by wielding his veto pen year after year to block the restoration of the state death penalty.

The only people whose execution Mario Cuomo didn't oppose were the unborn. Typical liberal.

Jeff Golub, a guitarist who crossed seamlessly between jazz, blues and rock, died today, Jan. 1, following a lengthy illness. He was 59. The precise cause and place of death have not yet been reported but Golub had experienced a series of physical setbacks in recent years that ultimately caused him to no longer be able to perform.

Jeff Golub, who was born in Copley, Ohio, April 15, 1955, played his first gig in 1967 at age 12 and turned professional during the following decade.  In 1980, after moving to New York, Golub joined the band of rock singer Billy Squier, with whom he toured and recorded extensively. Golub released his first solo recording, Unspoken Words, for Gaia Records in 1988. Golub released more than a dozen albums in all as a leader and three with the Avenue Blue Band, and spent several years (1988-95) in the band of singer Rod Stewart.

'Beverly Hillbillies' Actress Donna Douglas Dies at 81

Quote
Donna Douglas, best known for her role as the tomboy, critter-loving Elly May Clampett on the 1960s fish-out-of-water CBS sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies, died on New Year’s Day, according to WAFB Channel 9 in Louisiana, which cited family members. She was 81.

Douglas also co-starred opposite Elvis Presley in the 1966 film Frankie and Johnny (she was Frankie, like Elvis playing a performer on a Mississippi River riverboat) and stood out as the hospitalized woman underneath the bandages in the memorable 1960 Twilight Zone episode "The Eye of the Beholder."

Loved The Beverly Hillbillies, and still catch episodes on TV when I can. They just don't make TV like that anymore. RIP Donna. You will be missed.

I didn't realize she was 81. Dang that makes me feel old - and I suppose all of us guys who had a crush on her are feeling the same.

Stuart Scott, a longtime anchor at ESPN, died Sunday morning at the age of 49.

Among the features of the new ESPN studio in Bristol is a wall of catchphrases made famous by on-air talent over the years. An amazing nine of them belong to one man -- from his signature "Boo-Yah!" to "As cool as the other side of the pillow" to "He must be the bus driver cuz he was takin' him to school."

That man is Stuart Scott, and his contributions to the sports lexicon are writ large. But they are only one aspect of his legacy. When he passed away, he left behind so much more. He inspired his colleagues with his sheer talent, his work ethic and his devotion to his daughters, Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15. He defied convention and criticism to help bring this network into a new century. He spoke to the very athletes he was talking about with a flair and a style that ESPN president John Skipper says, "changed everything."

Andraé Crouch, Who Moved Gospel Into The 21st Century, Has Died
January 09, 2015 3:57 PM ET
Quote
Andraé Crouch, known as the Father of Modern Gospel, has died. The Grammy Award-winning musician wrote contemporary standards that bridged the black and white Christian communities. That's Andraé Crouch's choir on Madonna's "Like a Prayer." He even arranged and conducted for the Lion King soundtrack. Crouch died Thursday in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack last weekend. He was 72.

Andraé Crouch was the son of a preacher man. When he was nine, his dad opened a pentacostal church in a garage in the San Fernando Valley.

"I learned as my father needed a piano player in his church," said Crouch in a 1980s TV special hosted by LeVar Burton. "He needed a piano player and he prayed for me one Sunday. And I started playing the piano about three weeks later."

By then Andraé Crouch had already played a major role in creating a more contemporary, conservative gospel sound. The demonstrative shouts of the sanctified church were toned down to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Crouch was on The Jeffersons and he played Billy Graham crusades, the White House — even the Grand Ole Opry. Tennessee Ernie Ford introduced him from stage, in a performance that aired on PBS in 1985: "Now the man I'm about to introduce is a rare talent. He not only sings — he sings fine gospel, but he's a fantastic writer."

Songs Crouch wrote in the 1960s are still in use. Brian Courtney Wilson is a gospel singer and the music director of Covenant Glen United Methodist Church in Missouri City, Texas.

"Just this Sunday, we were singing 'The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power.' I was leaning on him to make sure we had something to say on Sunday," he said. "There's a certain clarity to what he's doing. He's being very clear about the truths he's trying to communicate."

That clarity has at times been dismissed by critics and academics as bland.

"Andraé himself was, I think, by the kindest yardstick, a gentle vocalist. Not a housewrecker," says Anthony Heilbut, who wrote a definitive history of gospel music, called The Gospel Sound, and a book of essays called The Fan Who Knew Too Much, in which he aired some of gospel's dirty laundry. Nevertheless, he says, Crouch knew how to move a congregation.

"His compositions have had an extreme importance and are very very popular, and the responses to the songs are very emotional," says Heilbut. "He really was a visionary then, in taking the theology, combined with these ambitious melodies."

For his part, Andraé Crouch would insist those melodies weren't all his, as he told NPR in 2006.

"I just wanted to, you know, keep up with what he has given me. And I don't think that it will ever drain out of me. I think that as long as I want to do music I think that God will continually pour into me."

And Brian Courtney Wilson says he's seen the music of Andraé Crouch at work. "I'm not schooled, officially, in doing this. You know, I don't have a degree in gospel music. I don't have a degree in gospel music history. It's just something that I've lived. And I've seen impact people's lives."

What he made retained its potency even when he grafted it onto pop music. You've felt it. That's Andraé Crouch's choir on "Man in the Mirror," and behind Michael Jackson at the 1988 Grammy Awards.

Lowell “Bud” Paxson, inventer of home shopping TV and television mogul, dies at 80

Paxson was best known for his ownership of television stations. WNYP, his first station, attempted (without success) to introduce Canada's CTV network to the U.S. market in the 1960s. In 1982, now in Florida, Paxson was paid for an account in can openers and launched an impromptu on-air sale to liquidate his payment; the success of the sale prompted Paxson to found the Home Shopping Network.

Eventually becoming a born-again Christian, Paxson sold off HSN in 1996 and launched PAX TV, a family-friendly television network. Pax, which drew much of its original content from CTV, was never a major success but continues in operation to this day, now known as Ion Television.

He made a name for himself in the early 1960s as a co-producer/co-publisher on a string of successful records, such as the top-charting novelty song "Alley Oop" and Paul Revere and the Raiders' instrumental "Like, Long Hair." He went on to work with acts including The Murmaids, Gene Vincent, KISS, Alice Cooper, Leon Russell and Kris Kristofferson.

In 1975, Fowley helped form the Runaways, with whom he worked until 1977 when the group severed ties, due in large part to his unorthodox work methods, mistreatment and verbal assaults.

In an interesting turn of events, former Runaways frontwoman Cherie Currie cared for Fowley during his fight with cancer this past year.

Rebecca D. Lockhart, former leader of the Utah House of Representatives, dies at 46

Lockhart, a Republican who represented Provo in the Utah State Legislature for 16 years, ascended to Speaker of the House. She was the first woman to be House Speaker and was viewed as an inspiration for women to serve in politics regardless of their political affiliation.

Lockhart was known for her “consensus-building” style in the House caucus, but also for her grit and determination. She was widely believed to be a candidate for governor in 2016, and most recently sought to be the state schools superintendent.

At a news conference Saturday afternoon, doctors at University Medical Center and Lockhart’s family disclosed that she had been diagnosed with the extremely rare Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. They said it is a “one in a million” diagnosis and the Speaker initially sought treatment for vertigo. The degenerative disease progressed quickly.

Don Harron, Canadian entertainment icon, dead at 90

During CBC’s 1952 television revue The Spring Thaw , the relatively unknown Harron took to the stage for a four-minute set. Few people watching knew they were about to witness a marquee moment in Canadian show business.

That evening he introduced Canada to Farquharson – the country bumpkin from rural Ontario known for his incessant puns and decrepit grey cardigan sweater – a character that would solidify Harron’s place among the nation’s great entertainers.

Harron achieved international success in the late 1960s when he began an 18-season stint performing as Farquharson on the hit U.S. variety show Hee Haw.

The Chicago Cubs were playing a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The date doesn't matter; it could have been any time from 1953 to 1971. Ernie Banks, the always ebullient, always energetic slugger who famously told us, "Let's play two," popped his head out of the Cubs dugout, looked first at the bright blue sky and then at the big crowd, and said, "Let's play three!"

That was Ernie Banks. One game in a day wasn't enough, and when there were two, he wanted three. No one, but no one, loved playing the game more than Ernie Banks. And not many played it better, especially as a young man when he changed, at least for a few years, the way baseball looked at the position of shortstop. He is a Hall of Famer, one of only 26 players who have hit at least 500 home runs (he finished his 19-year career with 512). And he is, in every way, on and off the field, Mr. Cub.

Today, my friend, Rep. Alan Nunnelee of Mississippi, passed away after a heroic struggle following brain surgery and chemotherapy.

The loss of Alan is hard to fathom. When we came to Washington, our families became fast friends. Through his deep and abiding faith, Alan became a teacher and an inspiration to me. He lived his faith and it was a source of profound strength for him until the end.

Ed Sabol, founder of NFL Films, dies at 98

A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2011, his vision led NFL Films in revolutionizing the way sports are presented. During his tenure (1964-1995), NFL Films won 52 Emmy Awards.

Many innovations were introduced under Sabol: the first use of a microphone on coaches, referees and players, adding popular music to footage, and of course, bloopers videos.

Sabol was preceded in death by his son, Steve, who ran NFL Films from 1985 to 2008.

Radio, TV and voiceover performer Gary Owens died on Feb. 12 at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Owens, who was 80, had been a diabetic since the age of 8.

Owens was probably best known as the announcer on NBC’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (1968-73), with his trademark hand-over-the-ear announcing style.

On the show, John Wayne once imitated Owens announcing. Anthony Mason, a longtime NBA player who helped the New York Knicks reach the 1994 NBA Finals, has died at the age of 48.

A Knicks spokesperson confirmed to ESPN that Mason died early Saturday morning. The 13-year NBA veteran had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier this month.

"First I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciates it," his son, Anthony Mason Jr., said Saturday. "Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother ... but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father -- Big Mase -- put up an incredible fight, dealing with a severe heart issue. I'm wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we've got to let you know we love you and know you'll always be with us."

Minoso had gone out Saturday night for a friend's birthday party when he apparently fell ill and pulled over in the Lakeview neighborhood, according to police and family.

He was found unresponsive in the driver's seat of his car near a gas station in the 2800 block of North Ashland Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

There was no dispute about Minoso’s talent as a player and his impact on the Chicago baseball landscape. He was a seven-time All-Star whose combination of speed and power led a White Sox revival in the 1950s. In his later years, the colorful Minoso, much like Ernie Banks with the Cubs, served as one of the team’s top goodwill ambassadors.  “I'm proud of everything,” Minoso said of his career. “I'm proud to be a baseball player.” The White Sox issued a statement that began, "Mr. White Sox has died."

M. Stanton Evans, conservative icon, dead at 80

Quote
M. Stanton Evans, arguably the funniest serious man in America for much of his 80 years on the planet, died Tuesday after a long bout with pancreatic cancer.

For most of his life, as Mr. Evans watched fellow conservatives come and go, he lamented — always with humor, not bitterness — their tendency to catch “Potomac fever” as soon as they come to power.

“When our people get to the point where they can do us some good, they stop being our people,” he said, uttering what became known as “Evans‘ Law of Politics.”

Chuck Bednarik, Hall-of-Fame Linebacker, Dies at 89

Quote
Chuck Bednarik, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the last great two-way NFL players, died early Saturday the Philadelphia Eagles said. He was 89.

Bednarik, known as "Concrete Charlie," epitomized the tough-guy linebacker and also was an outstanding center for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1949 to 1962. He is best remembered for a game-saving tackle at the 9-yard line on the final play of the 1960 title game, and it was typical Bednarik. He threw Green Bay running back Jim Taylor to the ground and refused to let him up while the final seconds ticked off as the Eagles held on for a 17-13 win...

The tackle on Taylor actually was the second hit that season that drew headlines. Earlier in 1960, he knocked out New York Giants running back Frank Gifford with a blow so hard that Gifford suffered a concussion and didn't play again until 1962...

It was a craze to rival the Hula-Hoop, and even less explicable. For a mere $3.95, a consumer could buy … a rock - a plain, ordinary, egg-shaped rock of the kind one could dig up in almost any backyard.

The wonder of it was, for a few frenzied months in 1975, more than 1 million consumers did, becoming the proud if slightly abashed owners of Pet Rocks, the fad that Newsweek later called "one of the most ridiculously successful marketing schemes ever."

Gary Dahl, the man behind that scheme - described variously as a marketing genius and a genial mountebank - died on March 23 at 78.

Robert Schuller, Crystal Cathedral megachurch founder, dies

Apr 2, 12:56 PM (ET)

By AMY TAXIN and GILLIAN FLACCUS

ARTESIA, Calif. (AP) — The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, the Southern California televangelist and author who beamed his upbeat messages on faith and redemption to millions from his landmark Crystal Cathedral only to see his empire crumble in his waning years, has died. He was 88.

Schuller died early Thursday at a care facility in Artesia, daughter Carol Schuller Milner said. He was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer in 2013.

Once a well-known televangelist, Schuller faded from view in recent years after watching his church collapse amid a disastrous leadership transition and sharp declines in viewership and donations that ultimately forced the ministry to file for bankruptcy.

The soaring, glass-paned Crystal Cathedral — the touchstone of Schuller's career — was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2011, and Schuller lost a legal battle the following year to collect more than $5 million from his former ministry for claims of copyright infringement and breach of contract.

Schuller, who preached in a flowing purple robe and outsized aviator glasses, led an evangelical Protestant ministry that was a product of modern technology. He and his late wife, Arvella, started a ministry in 1955 with $500 when he began preaching from the roof of a concession stand at a drive-in movie theater southeast of Los Angeles.

The church's motto — "Come as you are in the family car" — tapped into the burgeoning Southern California auto culture and the suburban boom of post-World War II America.

By 1961, the church had a brick-and-mortar home and Schuller began broadcasting the "Hour of Power" in 1970.

In 1980, he built the glass-and-steel Crystal Cathedral to house his booming TV ministry, which was broadcast live each week from the 2,800-seat sanctuary. At its peak in the 1990s, the program had 20 million viewers in about 180 countries.

Schuller's message — that "Possibility Thinking" and love of God overcome hardships — was a uniquely American blend of Bible and psychology.

Unlike other televangelists, Schuller's message lacked fire-and-brimstone condemnations or conservative political baggage. Fundamentalists attacked him for statements they believed denied the need for personal repentance of sin.

Schuller had admirers that ranged from fellow evangelist Billy Graham to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. His friendship with President Bill Clinton raised some eyebrows among the conservative Republicans.

In the start of a carefully choreographed leadership transition, Schuller's only son, 51-year-old Robert A. Schuller, was installed as senior pastor in 2006.

The younger Schuller left amid a bitter family feud in 2008. His father had removed him from the "Hour of Power" broadcasts, and he quit as senior pastor a few weeks later.

The tumult worsened a pre-existing decline in viewership and donations, and in 2010, Crystal Cathedral ministries filed for bankruptcy, citing debt of more than $43 million.

Bankruptcy filings indicated the ministry was paying significant tax-exempt housing allowances to Schuller family members and insiders. The allowances were legal but raised concerns among vendors and other creditors who had gone unpaid for months.

Robert Harold Schuller was born in Alton, Iowa, in 1926, and ordained in 1950. He was pastor of Ivanhoe Reformed Church in Chicago from 1950 to 1955 before moving to California.

Besides his son, Schuller and his wife had four daughters: Sheila, Jeanne, Carol and Gretchen. Wife Arvella Schuller died Feb. 11, 2014, after a brief illness.

Sarah Brady, no fan of the U.S. Constitution

Quote
CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/03/politics/sarah-brady-death/)

Sarah Brady, who with her husband, James Brady, pushed for stricter gun control laws, including the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, died Friday, her family said.

Brady, 73, died of pneumonia, the family said.

"Sarah courageously stepped up after Jim was shot to prevent others from enduring what our family has gone through, and her work has saved countless lives," their statement said.

James Brady, President Ronald Reagan's press secretary, was shot in the head by John Hinckley Jr. during his attempt to assassinate Reagan in 1981. Brady spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, advocating against gun violence.

He died in August.

Sarah Brady was also involved in gun violence prevention for the past 30 years. She was the chairwoman of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence from 2000 until she died.

The National Rifle Association said its thoughts and prayers were with the Brady family.

"Although we disagreed on public policy, Sarah Brady was an honorable American who we always respected," the gun rights organization said.  ...

Robert Burns Jr., a founding member and former drummer of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, dead at 64
Quote

Robert Burns Jr., a founding member and former drummer of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died in a car crash in Georgia, state officials said on Saturday. He was 64 years old.

Burns was not wearing his seatbelt when his car went off a road late Friday, striking a mailbox and a tree near Cartersville, northwest of Atlanta, the Georgia State Patrol said.

He was the only occupant in the car and nobody else was hurt. The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.

Burns was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, best known for hits including "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

He remained in the group from its inception in the mid-1960s in Jacksonville, Florida until 1974, performing on the band's debut album, "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd." The album launched the band to fame and helped define the sound of southern rock, which exploded in popularity during the decade.

Burns left Lynyrd Skynyrd after growing tired of life on the road and was replaced by drummer Artimus Pyle, the band's biography said.

In 1977, the band's singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and vocalist Cassie Gaines were killed when their plane crashed in Mississippi. Pyle survived.

In recent years, Burns had performed in Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute bands, local media reported.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

I saw him at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano 24 years ago when he was 65. He billed that as his final tour, as he was retiring from the road. He gave a great performance. The opening act for him was Leon Russell, who gave only a mediocre show.

Of course King did not retire from the road, but kept on going to the end. My brother in law was in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago, for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions, at the invitation of Jimmy Vaughan, brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and I know they will be am saddened.

Obama should order flags flown at half mast, for the King.

Yepremian, a Cypriot who originally played soccer before learning the American game, eventually played 14 seasons in the National Football League over 16 years, nine of them with the Miami Dolphins. His most infamous game was Super Bowl VII, in which the undefeated Dolphins were on the verge of a shutout before Yepremian, whose hands were too small to handle an NFL football, nevertheless tried to throw the ball away after a botched field goal attempt. The pass fell out of Garo's hands mid-throw and ended up being returned for a touchdown.

Yepremian died aged 70 after a battle with cancer.

I can still 'see' that play in my mind.  All he had to do is kick the ball out of bounds.  Instead he picked it up and tried to throw it.  it was pretty sad....

Maurie Berman, founder of Chicago's iconic Superdawg, dies at 89

Quote
Several veterans opened food stands to supplement their student incomes on the GI Bill after World War II, but Maurie Berman wanted something different.

"He wanted to open something more noteworthy," said his son, Scott Berman, 64. "A building, a tower, something with some identity."

So was born the friendly, family-run Northwest Side vintage drive-in Superdawg, with its order booth that looks like an airport control tower and its two 12-foot-tall papier-mache hot dogs designed in 1948 that stand on its roof.

Mr. Berman died Sunday, May 17, of heart problems at 89, his son said.

I Was Dying

First, I was dying to finish high school and start college.
And then I was dying to finish college and start a career.
And then I was dying to marry and have children.
And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough for school so I could return to work.
And then I was dying to retire.
And now I am dying...and suddenly I realize I forgot to live.

John Nash, Economics Nobelist in 'A Beautiful Mind,' Dies at 86
Sunday, May 24, 2015 10:25 AM

By: Laurence Arnold

John Nash, the Princeton University mathematician and Nobel laureate whose towering intellect and descent into paranoid schizophrenia formed the basis of the Academy Award-winning movie “A Beautiful Mind,” has died. He was 86.

Nash and his wife, Alicia, were killed in an auto crash on the New Jersey Turnpike Saturday afternoon, New Jersey State Police Sergeant Gregory Williams said Sunday.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in economics to Nash, John Harsanyi of the University of California-Berkeley and Reinhard Selten of the University of Bonn in Germany for their work in game theory, which seeks to understand how people, governments and companies cooperate and compete.

Nash was honored for his early insights, still widely used in economics, into how rivals shift or maintain strategies and allegiances. The Nash Equilibrium describes the moment when all parties are pursuing their best-case scenario and wouldn’t change course even if a rival does. It has been widely applied to matters including military face-offs, industrial price wars and labor negotiations.

Nash’s work was of interest mainly to fellow mathematicians and economists until the release in 1998 of “A Beautiful Mind,” a book by Sylvia Nasar stemming from her profile of Nash in the New York Times in 1995. Director Ron Howard turned the book into the 2001 film starring Russell Crowe as Nash and Jennifer Connelly as his wife. The movie won the Academy Award for best picture, with Howard and Connelly winning Oscars as well. Crowe, nominated as best actor, lost to Denzel Washington for “Training Day.”

‘Hellish’ Life

The book and movie told of how Nash, beginning in his early 30s, battled paranoid schizophrenia and how the mental disorder derailed his academic career and turned his life “hellish,” as Nasar put it.

After stays in psychiatric hospitals and a period wandering around Europe, he returned to Princeton and “became the Phantom of Fine Hall, a mute figure who scribbled strange equations on blackboards in the mathematics building and searched anxiously for secret messages in numbers,” Nasar wrote.

Nash began to emerge from his schizophrenia in the 1980s, when he was well into his 50s, having lost many of his productive years to the disorder.

The Nash whom Crowe portrays in the movie is haunted by visions of non-existent friends and enemies. The real Nash said he didn’t imagine people, but heard bizarre voices in his head and thought he saw codes and signals hidden in newspapers.

Rumors Spread

In 2002, Nash went on CBS’s “60 Minutes” to combat disparaging rumors that may have been spread to undermine the movie’s Oscar chances. Among the allegations was that the movie had scrubbed from Nash’s life story evidence of anti-Semitism and adultery.

Nasar, the author, responded with an op-ed piece calling those characterizations untrue. A 1967 letter from Nash cited as evidence of his anti-Semitism, Nasar said, was written when his paranoid delusions had him thinking he was “Job, a slave in chains, the emperor of Antarctica and a messiah.”

Nash said in the “60 Minutes” interview, “I did have strange ideas during certain periods of time.”

John Forbes Nash Jr. was born on June 13, 1928, in the Appalachian coal-mining and railroad town of Bluefield, West Virginia. He was the first of two children of John Nash, an electrical engineer, and his wife Virginia, a former school teacher. In an autobiography for the Nobel Foundation, Nash said he was reading E.T. Bell’s “Men of Mathematics” and proving Fermat’s Little Theorem by the time he was in high school.

Carnegie Mellon

He won a George Westinghouse Scholarship to attend Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh. He shifted from chemical engineering to chemistry, then to mathematics. He graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Late in his time at Carnegie, stimulated by an elective course in international economics, Nash began work on a paper offering his take on how two parties can reach accommodation while bargaining. At Princeton, which he chose over Harvard University for his graduate studies, he continued his work on game theory during doctoral studies beginning in 1948.

His Ph.D. thesis, written when he was a student of Albert W. Tucker, was the foundation for his Nobel award decades later. By extending game-theory analysis to situations that aren’t zero-sum games, he built upon the work of Princeton’s John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern, who had broken ground in the field with a 1944 book.

MIT Work

Nash taught at Princeton for a year after receiving his Ph.D. in 1950. After a brief stint at the Rand Corp., he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was there until 1959. His work during that time included solving the so-called embedding problem in differential geometry and devising what became known as the Nash bargaining solution.

He and Alicia Larde, who met at MIT when she took his advanced-calculus course, married in 1957. It was early in 1959, when Alicia was pregnant with their son, John Charles Nash -- Nash had another son, John David Stier, from a relationship before he married -- that Nash began experiencing what he later termed his “mental disturbances.”

He resigned from the MIT faculty and spent 50 days at McLean Hospital, the first of several involuntary commitments to psychiatric institutions.

Spying Fears

Wandering through Europe, he “feared he was being spied on and hunted down and he tried to give up his United States citizenship,” Nasar wrote. Back home, he separated from his wife and spent time with his mother in Roanoke, Virginia. He tried to resume his research during what he called his “interludes of, as it were, enforced rationality.”

Nash’s wife continued to support him following their divorce in 1963, and he lived with her in Princeton most of the time. They remarried in 2001.

In his autobiographical piece for the Nobel Foundation, Nash reported “thinking rationally again in the style that is characteristic of scientists,” though he said rational thought had a downside, since it “imposes a limit on a person’s concept of his relation to the cosmos.”

The film version of “A Beautiful Mind” culminated with Nash paying tribute to his wife in his Nobel acceptance speech. In reality, Nash didn’t give a Nobel lecture.

Like his father, the Nashes’ son, known as Johnny, earned a Ph.D. in math and struggled with schizophrenia. In 1999, John and Alicia Nash came forward to support New Jersey’s community mental-health programs, like the one that allowed their son to live at home, in the face of budget cuts.

'A Beautiful Mind' mathematician killed in crash

Russell Crowe portrayed John Nash in film

Published: 22 hours ago

(NJ) — John Forbes Nash Jr., the brilliant Princeton University mathematician whose life story was the subject of the film “A Beautiful Mind,” and his wife Alicia were killed in a crash Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike, police said.

Nash was 86. Alicia Nash was 82. The couple lived in Princeton Junction.

The two were in a taxi traveling southbound in the left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike when the driver of the Ford Crown Victoria lost control as he tried to pass a Chrysler in the center lane, crashing into a guard rail, according to State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams.

Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor in Manson trial, dies at 80
AP via Yahoo News (http://news.yahoo.com/vincent-bugliosi-prosecutor-manson-trial-dies-80-054033690.html)
Quote
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vincent Bugliosi, a prosecutor who parlayed his handling of the Charles Manson trial into a career as a bestselling author, has died, his son said Monday night. He was 80 years old.

Bugliosi, who had struggled with cancer in recent years, died Saturday night at a hospital in Los Angeles, his son, Vincent Bugliosi Jr., told The Associated Press.

Bugliosi Jr. said his father had "an unflagging dedication to justice" in everything he did.

As an author, Bugliosi Sr. was best known for "Helter Skelter," which was his account of the Manson Family and the killings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others by followers of the cult leader, Charles Manson.

Bugliosi had prosecuted Manson and his female followers, winning convictions in one of America's most sensational trials.

He was an unknown Los Angeles deputy district attorney on Aug. 9, 1969, when the bodies of Tate, the beautiful actress wife of Roman Polanski, and four others were discovered butchered by unknown assailants who left bloody scrawlings on the door of her elegant home.

The victims included members of Hollywood's glitterati: celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring; coffee heiress Abigail Folger; Polish film director Voityck Frykowksi; Tate, who was 8½-months pregnant; and Steven Parent, the friend of a caretaker.

A night later, two more mutilated bodies were found across town in another upscale neighborhood. The crime scene was marked with the same bloody scrawlings of words including, "Pigs" and "Rise" and "Helter Skelter." The victims were grocers Rosemary and Leno LaBianca, who had no connection to Tate and her glamorous friends.

Bugliosi was one of those assigned to the team of prosecutors while the case was being investigated. When members of the rag tag Manson Family were caught and charged with the crimes months later, a more veteran prosecutor, Aaron Stovitz, was named head of the district attorney's team and Bugliosi was assigned the second chair. But before long, a dispute arose between Stovitz and his boss over a remark he made to the media. He was summarily removed from the case and the intense, ambitious Bugliosi stepped into the role of a lifetime.

The trial of Manson and three female followers, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten, lasted 9½ months and became a courtroom drama that rivaled any cinematic trial. It cost Los Angeles County $1 million.

Bugliosi set the tone in his opening statement and closing argument, denouncing Manson as a murderous cult leader and his followers as young killers willing to do his bidding. He called the women "robots" and "zombies," manipulated by Manson — "a dictatorial maharajah of a tribe of bootlicking slaves."

He first proposed the theory that Manson was inspired to violence by the Beatles song "Helter Skelter," which the cult leader thought predicted a race war that Manson and his followers would foment.

Determined to show the breadth of the Manson Family's reach, Bugliosi called 84 witnesses, most of them a parade of disaffected young people who joined up with Manson and fell under his sway.

The trial became an exploration of the cult and its drug and sex fueled adoration of Manson whom members venerated as Jesus. He introduced 290 pieces of evidence.

At times, the defendants sought to taunt the prosecutor, jumping up and singing in court or grabbing at his papers on his lectern. The trial went on for so long that a defense lawyer disappeared and was found dead in the woods. Bugliosi maintained there was foul play but none was found.

Bugliosi's death was first reported Monday night by KNBC-TV.

Bugliosi was born in 1934 in Hibbing, Minn. He attended the University of Miami at Coral Gables, Fla., on a tennis scholarship and graduated from the law school of the University of California, Los Angeles.

After the Manson trial, he wrote "Helter Skelter" with collaborator Curt Gentry, and it became one of the bestselling crime books of all time.

He tried running for public office and lost, tried his hand on practicing defense law but ultimately returned to writing books. He wrote a dozen books, including the true-crime books, "Till Death Do Us Part," and "And The Sea Will Tell."

His non-fiction efforts, which took on controversial subjects, included "Outrage: The Five Reasons Why O. J. Simpson Got Away With Murder," and "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder."

Bugliosi Jr. said his father was most proud of his nearly 2,000-page examination of the Kennedy Assassination, "Reclaiming History," which took over 20 years to write.

But Bugliosi remained most associated with the Manson case for the rest of his life. Reflecting on it 40 years later, he said, "These murders were probably the most bizarre in the recorded annals of American crime...Evil has its lure and Manson has become a metaphor for evil."

Bugliosi and his wife of 59 years, Gail, had two children, Wendy and Vince Jr.

Randy Howard, country singer, dies a country song death at 65

Randy Howard didn’t just sing about being an outlaw, he lived like one: racking up drug, drinking and gun charges from Tennessee to Georgia.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that Howard died like an outlaw, too.

According to authorities, Howard was fatally shot after opening fire on a bail bondsman who showed up to his Lynchburg, Tenn., cabin to arrest the country singer. The bondsman was also struck by a bullet but expected to live.

Born poor, Mr. Kerkorian was a brawling amateur boxer, a daredevil pilot and a high-stakes poker player before figuring out safer ways to amass a multibillion-dollar fortune. He pursued strategies that baffled business rivals and Wall Street analysts and that left him sometimes on the verge of bankruptcy. Other times, his moves brought him windfalls ...

Jack Carter, Brash Comic, Dies at 93

Quote
Jack Carter, whose brash, caustic comedy made him a star in early television and helped him sustain a career of more than a half-century in TV, nightclubs, movies and on stage, died of respiratory failure at his Beverly Hills, California, home, a family spokesman said.

Carter turned 93 just four days before he died Sunday, Jeff Sanderson said.

In 1948, when network television was beginning, Carter starred in a series of variety shows on ABC. In 1950, Pat Weaver, the visionary NBC programmer who fostered the "Today" and "Tonight" shows and other innovations, scheduled two hours of programming called "Saturday Night Revue."

Burt Shavitz, beekeeper who founded Burt's Bees, dies at 80

Burt's Bees started by chance -- Shavitz, a bearded beekeeper who sold honey from a roadside stand, pulled over one day in 1984 to pick up hitchhiker Roxanne Quimby. The two hit it off, and Quimby started making candles from Shavitz's beeswax.

The pair made $200 at their first craft fair selling the candles, and within a year, pulled in $20,000, according to a company timeline. Soon, they started making all kinds of other products -- featuring Shavitz's face and beard on the labels -- including Burt's Bees' iconic beeswax lip balm.

Burt's Bees was sold for $1 billion to Clorox in 2007.

Stage actor Roger Rees dies at 71

Welsh actor Roger Rees played numerous roles on Broadway and in London stage shows, his most acclaimed work from that field being the title role of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, an eight-hour play. Less known in the U.S., he did have some roles, including the villainous "Sheriff of Rottingham" in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Robin Colcord on Cheers and Thomas Paine in a PBS production of Liberty! The American Revolution. He continued to act until shortly before his death from a brief, unspecified illness.

A naturalized U.S. citizen and convert to Judaism, Rees is survived by his same-sex spouse, playwright Rick Elice.

Fuller's note: This happened a month ago but it appears I didn't catch it when it happened.

Brown had a string of success in the country music field that stretched from 1954 to 1967 as a member of a singing family; when his sisters retired, he continued with a solo career, which also had a string of hits. He retired from recording music in 1981 and shifted his efforts to television, maintaining a live performance schedule until shortly before his death. At the time of his death, he was hosting the Country Music Greats Radio Hour. He died June 11, just over a week after going public with a diagnosis of lung cancer. The Country Music Hall of Fame rushed to induct him before his death.

Miller began his career at tiny AM 1410 in his hometown of Dunkirk, New York. From there, he moved onto Buffalo, where he quickly took root at WBEN radio and TV as a weather and sports anchor. His work earned the attention of Dick Gallagher, the general manager of the newly formed Buffalo Bills of the American Football League, and when the Bills took the field in 1960, the team chose Miller as its play-by-play voice. He held the position for the team's first eleven seasons, then (after another station won the Bills broadcast rights) came back seven years later and called the Bills for another 26 years. His exuberant, but steady, style (more subdued than his hockey counterpart Rick Jeanneret, but still excitable enough to coin such phrases as "fandemonium" and "fasten your seatbelts" that remain part of the Buffalonian lexicon) made him a favorite on NFL Films broadcasts (it didn't hurt that Jeff Kaye, a colleague of Miller's, also worked at NFL Films).

Miller also had a long association with basketball, calling games for Niagara University during the days of Calvin Murphy in the late 1960s, the Buffalo Braves (where he was so close with Braves coach Jack Ramsay that Miller reportedly gave him advice on substitutions) in the 1970s, and later college basketball games on the upstart Empire Sports Network in the early 1990s.

Miller suffered a large of health problems in his last years of life stemming from aging, leading to his death this past Friday, July 17.

Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61 ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Piper -- born Roderick George Toombs -- died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood on Thursday night. He was discovered on Friday.

Piper was a wrestling icon -- one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the '80s, and even wrestled in "Wrestlemania I" back in 1985 ... squaring off against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T.

Roddy's rep tells us, "I am devastated at this news. Rod was a good friend as well as a client and one of the most generous, sincere and authentic people I have ever known. This is a true loss to us all."

Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2006, but last November he said he was cancer free. A family source tells us he was "cancer free" at the time of his death.

A family member tells us, "Our family is saddened by the sudden passing of our father and beloved husband, Roderick Toombs aka Rowdy Roddy Piper."

Roddy was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005 and was one of the top 50 villains in the history of the WWE.

Piper had a long relationship with WWE -- last wrestling back in 2008 ... but appeared on various WWE shows up until 2014.

Roddy is survived by his wife Kitty and their 4 kids -- including 3 daughters and son Colton who's pursuing a career in professional wrestling.

Robert Conquest, Esteemed Soviet Union Historian, Dies at 98

Robert Conquest, the Anglo-American historian famous for his writings on the Soviet Union, died at the age of 98 on Monday in Palo Alto, California.

The Telegraph writes in his obituary:

An ardent Bolshevik as a young man, Conquest became a bitter foe of Soviet “Socialism.” He had first visited Russia in 1937 as a youthful devotee of the great experiment. It was a half century before he returned in 1989, having spent his life between chronicling the horrors the country had endured, and emerging, in the view of the Oxford historian Mark Almond, as “one of the few Western heroes of the collapse of Soviet Communism.”

Most notable of Conquest’s works was The Great Terror, which was the first detailed account to chronicle the horrors of Joseph Stalin’s rule in the Soviet Union between 1937 to 1939. According to his estimates–which were eventually deemed high but relatively accurate–20 million people died under Stalin’s rule due to famine, Soviet labor camps and executions.

Frank Gifford, Legendary Monday Night Football Sportscaster and Husband of Kathie Lee Gifford, Dead at 84
Quote
Legendary Monday Night Football broadcaster Frank Gifford, the husband of Today co-host Kathie Lee Gifford, died Sunday of natural causes. He was 84.

“It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and friend Frank Gifford,” said the Gifford Family in a statement. “Frank died suddenly on this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home. We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.”

Before launching his sport casting career, Gifford spent 12 seasons with the New York Giants, making eight pro Bowl appearances and winning the MVP award in 1956.

Gifford earned an Emmy nod in 1976 (for Outstanding Sports Personality), and in ’97 was a recipient of the Sports Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

He played himself in a number of sports-themed sitcoms, including Spin City and Coach.

FOX News (http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2015/08/09/frank-gifford-legendary-football-player-and-broadcaster-dead-at-84/):
Quote
Frank Gifford, a Hall of Fame football player for the New York Giants and a legendary broadcaster, died Sunday at his Connecticut home of natural causes, his family announced. He was just seven days shy of his 85th birthday.

Gifford is survived, among others, by his wife, television personality Kathy Lee Gifford.

His family said in a statement: "We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being."

Gifford was a No. 1 draft pick by the Giants in 1952 and enjoyed a versatile career with New York, playing both offense and defense. He was named NFL Player of the Year in 1956 and named to seven Pro Bowls for three different positions – defensive back, halfback and flanker.

Though Gifford was the centerpiece of a Giants offense that went to five NFL title games in the 1950s and '60s, he experienced highs and lows as an NFL player. Gifford fumbled twice early in the 1958 NFL championship game, both of which led to Baltimore Colts touchdowns, and later came up short on a critical third down. The Colts eventually won 23-17 in the league's first overtime game. The thrilling finish helped popularize the NFL and was dubbed "The Greatest Game Ever Played," although not by Gifford.

"Not my greatest game," Gifford told the AP in 2008. "I fumbled going out (of the end zone) and I fumbled going in."

Gifford and his teammates felt he was robbed by an incorrectly spotted ball with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter, though video technology employed for a 50th anniversary documentary indicated the call was correct. In any event, the Giants were forced to punt in the '58 game, leading to a famous drive led by Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas to send it into overtime.

Gifford had his best year in 1956, rushing for 819 yards, picking up 603 yards receiving and scoring nine touchdowns in 12 games. The Giants routed the Chicago Bears 47-7 at Yankee Stadium, where Gifford shared a locker with Mickey Mantle.

A crushing hit by 233-pound Eagles linebacker Chuck Bednarik in November 1960 flattened Gifford and likely shortened his football career. Bednarik was pictured standing over the unconscious Gifford, pumping his fist in a celebration thought by many to be over the top. Gifford was in the hospital for 10 days and sidelined until 1962.

In 12 seasons, all with New York, Gifford scored 34 rushing touchdowns and 43 receiving touchdowns.

His numbers led to his election to the Hall of Fame in 1977 and Gifford's jersey number, 16, was retired by the Giants in 2000.

After he retired following the 1964 season, the flexible Gifford turned to broadcasting. After initially working with CBS, he joined ABC's "Monday Night Football" in 1971, at first as a play-by-play announcer and then as an analyst.

Later in life he stayed in the spotlight through his marriage to Kathie Lee Gifford, who famously called him a "human love machine" and "lamb-chop" to her millions of viewers.

Gifford hosted "Wide World of Sports," covered several Olympics — his call of Frank Klammer's gold medal run in 1976 is considered a broadcasting masterpiece — and announced 588 consecutive NFL games for ABC, not even taking time off after the death of his mother shortly before a broadcast in 1986.

While he worked with others, including Dan Dierdorf, Al Michaels, Joe Namath and O.J. Simpson, Gifford was most known for the eight years he served as a calm buffer between the folksy Don Meredith and acerbic Howard Cosell.

In its early years the show was a cultural touchstone, with cities throwing parades for the visiting announcers and celebrities such as John Lennon and Ronald Reagan making appearances.

"I hate to use the words 'American institution,' but there's no other way to put it, really," Gifford told The Associated Press in 1993. "There's nothing else like it."

A handsome straight-shooter who came off as earnest and sincere, Gifford was popular with viewers, even if some accused him of being a shill for the NFL. When he wasn't on the field, Gifford tried to put his movie-star good looks to use in Hollywood, appearing in about a dozen films, most notably the 1959 submarine movie "Up Periscope."

Born Aug. 16, 1930, in Santa Monica, Calif., Frank Newton Gifford was the son of an itinerant oil worker. Growing up in Depression-era California, Gifford estimated he moved 47 times before entering high school, occasionally sleeping in parks or the family car and eating dog food. He was a star at Bakersfield High School and was an All-American during his senior season at the University of Southern California.

Bond died Saturday night after a brief illness in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which he served as founding president in the 1970s.

'Awakenings' Author, Famed Neurologist Oliver Sacks Dies at 82

NEW YORK — Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose books like "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat" probed distant ranges of human experience by compassionately portraying people with severe and sometimes bizarre neurological conditions, has died. He was 82.

Sacks died Sunday at his home in New York City, his assistant, Kate Edgar, said.

Sacks had announced in February 2015 that he was terminally ill with a rare eye cancer that had spread to his liver.

As a practicing neurologist, Sacks looked at some of his patients with a writer's eye and found publishing gold.

In his best-selling 1985 book, he described a man who really did mistake his wife's face for his hat while visiting Sacks' office, because his brain had difficulty interpreting what he saw. Another story in the book featured autistic twins who had trouble with ordinary math but who could perform other amazing calculations.

Discover magazine ranked it among the 25 greatest science books of all time in 2006, declaring, "Legions of neuroscientists now probing the mysteries of the human brain cite this book as their greatest inspiration."

"Judy Carne, ‘Laugh-In’s’ ‘Sock it to Me’ Girl, Dies at 76"

"Actress Judy Carne, best known for being the “Sock it to me!” girl on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in the ’60s, died on Sept. 3, according to the Telegraph. She was 76.

Carne rose to overnight fame with her appearances on “Laugh-In,” where the bouncy actress’ zany persona would be doused with water every time she uttered the phrase “Sock it to me,” accidentally or not. She acted on the sketch comedy show for two years, making the occasional appearance in the third season.

Carne was also known for her tumultuous relationship with Burt Reynolds. She was the actor’s first wife, marrying him in 1963 before they divorced in 1965. She detailed their relationship, confessing to partaking in several affairs and struggling with drug addiction, in her 1985 autobiography “Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.”

She battled heavily with drug addiction after leaving “Laugh-In,” being charged with heroin possession and prescription forgery in the late ’70s. She was acquitted of the heroin charge."

Sewell, who was the art critic at the London Evening Standard newspaper for more than 30 years, was well known for his outspoken and often controversial views.

John Guillermin, 'Towering Inferno' Director, Dies at 89

Quote
John Guillermin, a prolific British director best known for blockbusters like the 1974 disaster movie "The Towering Inferno" and the 1976 remake of "King Kong," died on Sunday at his home in Topanga, Calif. He was 89.

The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Mary Guillermin, said.

In addition to big-budget extravaganzas, Mr. Guillermin (the name is French, but he pronounced it GILL-er-min) directed a raft of films in various genres from the end of the 1940s until he retired from filmmaking in the 1980s.

Kevin Corcoran, known to generations of Disney fans as 'Moochie,' dies at 66

Quote
Disney child actor Kevin Corcoran, who played the irrepressible Moochie in the "Spin and Marty" serials on "The Mickey Mouse Club" and went on to play roles in films such as "Old Yeller," died Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. He was 66.

The cause was colorectal cancer, said his wife, Laura.

Moochie -- an adorable, talkative kid who was always getting into jams -- was not far removed from the real-life Corcoran, said David Stollery, who played Marty. Corcoran was 7 when he started appearing in the series that took place on a dude ranch.

Marty Ingels, an actor and comedian known for his co-starring role in the 1960s sitcom I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, has died, wife Shirley Jones announced Wednesday. He was 79.

Ingels died Wednesday in Tarzana, Calif., as a result of complications from a stroke.

"He often drove me crazy, but there’s not a day I won’t miss him and love him to my core," Jones said in a statement."

Ingels did a lot more TV after "I'm Dickens, He's Fenster", mostly as a guest star. He was a funny guy because he was so quirky. Plus he landed Shirley which wasn't such a bad deal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maureen_O%27Hara (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maureen_O%27Hara)

Maureen O'Hara (17 August 1920 – 24 October 2015) was an Irish-American film actress and singer. She was first educated at the John Street West Girls' School near Thomas Street in Dublin's Liberties Area. From the ages of 6 to 17 she trained in drama, music and dance, and at the age of 10 joined the Rathmines Theatre Company and worked in amateur theatre in the evenings, after her lessons.[3] The famously red-headed O'Hara was noted for playing fiercely passionate heroines with a highly sensible attitude. She often worked with director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne. Her autobiography, 'Tis Herself, was published in 2004 and was a New York Times Bestseller. She was one of the last living actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Although O'Hara was never nominated for a competitive Academy Award, in November 2014 she was presented with an Honorary Academy Award with the inscription "To Maureen O'Hara, one of Hollywood's brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength". O'Hara joined Myrna Loy in being the only actresses ever to receive an Academy Award for acting without having been nominated previously.[4]

Maureen O'Hara, spirited movie star, dies at 95

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. –  Maureen O'Hara, the flame-haired Irish movie star who appeared in classics ranging from the grim "How Green Was My Valley" to the uplifting "Miracle on 34th Street" and bantered unforgettably with John Wayne in several films, has died. She was 95.

O'Hara died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho, said Johnny Nicoletti, her longtime manager.

"She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favorite movie, 'The Quiet Man,'" said a statement from her family.

"As an actress, Maureen O'Hara brought unyielding strength and sudden sensitivity to every role she played. Her characters were feisty and fearless, just as she was in real life. She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world," said a family biography.

O'Hara came to Hollywood to star in the 1939 "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and went on to a long career.

During her movie heyday, she became known as the Queen of Technicolor because of the camera's love affair with her vivid hair, pale complexion and fiery nature.

But she also had talent.

"I proved there was a bloody good actress in me," she told the British newspaper The Telegraph last year. "It wasn't just my face. I gave bloody good performances."

She never was nominated for a competitive Oscar but received an honorary Academy Award last year.

After her start in Hollywood with "Hunchback" and some minor films at RKO, she was borrowed by 20th Century Fox to play the beautiful young daughter in the 1941 saga of a coal-mining family, "How Green Was My Valley."

"How Green Was My Valley" went on to win five Oscars including best picture and best director for John Ford, beating out Orson Welles and "Citizen Kane" among others. It was the first of several films she made under the direction of Ford, whose grouchy nature seemed to melt in her presence — although he once punched her hard in the jaw at a party.

The popularity of "How Green Was My Valley" confirmed O'Hara's status as a Hollywood star. RKO and Fox shared her contract, and her most successful films were made at Fox.

They included "Miracle on 34th Street," the classic 1947 Christmas story in which O'Hara was little Natalie Wood's skeptical mother and among those charmed by Edmund Gwenn as a man who believed he was Santa Claus.

Other films included the costume drama "The Foxes of Harrow" (Rex Harrison, 1947); the comedy "Sitting Pretty" (Clifton Webb, 1948); and the sports comedy "Father Was a Fullback" (Fred MacMurray, 1949).

Often she sailed the high seas in colorful pirate adventures such as "The Black Swan" with Tyrone Power, "The Spanish Main" with Paul Henreid, "Sinbad the Sailor" with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and "Against All Flags" with Errol Flynn.

With Ford's "Rio Grande" in 1950, O'Hara became Wayne's favorite leading lady. The most successful of their five films was 1952's "The Quiet Man," also directed by Ford, in which she matched Wayne blow for blow in a classic donnybrook.

In one scene, she recalled, Wayne drags her across a field that he and Ford had covered with sheep dung.

With her Irish spunk, she could stand up to the rugged Duke, both on and off screen. She was proud when he remarked in an interview that he preferred to work with men — "except for Maureen O'Hara; she's a great guy."

"'Miss Moneypenny' Actress Lois Maxwell Dies at 80"

'Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond films, has died.

The Canadian actress, who was living in Australia, passed away at the age of 80.

She starred alongside Sean Connery in the first Bond film, "Dr No," in 1962.

Maxwell continued in the role until 1985, when she played M's secretary for the last time in "A View To A Kill" with Roger Moore.

Moore paid tribute to the star, calling her his 'lucky token."

He told Sky News she would be remembered with "great affection", adding: "She will certainly be missed by me, and I'm sure by millions of fans around the world."

By Ian Swanson - 11/01/15 06:00 PM EST

Fred Thompson, the former U.S. senator also known as a start on television's "Law and Order," has died, according to a report in the Tennessean.

Thompson died from a recurrence of lymphona, according to a statement from his family to the newspaper.

"It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of grief that we share the passing our our brother, husband, father, and grandfather who died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by his family," the statement said.

Thompson served as a U.S. senator from 1994 to 2003 for leaving the Senate to resume his acting career.

He briefly ran for president during the 2008 cycle before dropping out in the race eventually won by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

As an actor, Thompson was best known for playing Manhattan D.A. Arthur Branch. He began playing in the role in the last several months of his Senate career.

Before entering the Senate, Thompson had memorable roles in "Die Hard II," "No Way Out," and "Days of  Thunder."

But before becoming an actor, Thompsoh had a long career in Tennessee and Washington as a lawyer, including a stint as minority counsel on the Senate Watergate Committee.

"Fred once said that the experiences he had growing up in small-town Tennessee formed the prism through which he viewed the world and shaped the way he dealt with life," his family said in a statement. "Fred stood on principle and common sense, and had a deep love for and connection with the people across Tennessee whom he had the privilege to serve in the United States Senate.

"He enjoyed a hearty laugh, a strong handshake, a good cigar, and a healthy dose of humility. Fred was the same man on the floor of the Senate, the movie studio, or the town square of Lawrenceburg, his home," the statement said.

"Fred believed that the greatness of our nation was defined by the hard work, faith, and honesty of its people. He had an enduring belief in the exceptionalism of our country, and that America could provide the opportunity for any boy or girl, in any corner of our country, to succeed in life," the statement concluded.

He had a very ambitious wife and admittedly married, at least, for looks. (And seriously, could you blame the guy? She's gorgeous.)

But seriously, as much as I sparred with Thompson supporters back in '07, he was a genuinely decent man. It's a shame he had to go out that way. May he rest in peace.

"George Barris, Designer of TV’s Batmobile, Dead at 89"

Interesting the things for which we are remembered. When I was a 50s teenager growing up in So Cal George Barris was a specrtal figure somewhere out there in the Hollywood area who set the standards for how we customized our cars. Lowered, chopped, channeled. Lord knows I ruined my first car, a 55 Chevy, seeking to emulate the Barris style. LOl. Anyway, God rest his soul.

""Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary kustom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky. He passed on peacefully in his sleep at 2:45 am," his son Brett said in a private post on Facebook. "He lived his life they way he wanted til the end. He would want everyone celebrate the passion he had for life and for what he created for all to enjoy."

Barris is credited with designing iconic automobiles for TV shows including the Munster Koach, the Green Hornet's car from the titular series, the jalopy from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and K.I.T.T. from "Knight Rider."

But he's arguably most renown for creating the Batmobile from the 1960s "Batman" series, a car he adapted from a concept car he acquired from the Ford Motor Company."

My friend and I met George Barris in the 60s at a custom car show at the New York Coliseum. As teenagers we loved what were lovingly referred to as "funny cars" back then. I saved that photo and autograph for decades. Don't know if I still have it. But reading of his death, brought back the memory of that day.

Rest in Peace, George Barris.

Before the goofy cars for television, there were some beautiful custom cars on the road, by older guys mostly.

I remember around age ten I walked a certain route to my grandmother's house, and there was about a 55 Chevy named "Chantilly Lace."

Later in high school, a rich friend had a custom car before he reached 16, so he got permission from his folks, for me to drive us around in it. He had an uncle that created it for him. About a 1950 Ford.

Lowered all around, lowered in front, spinners, twice pipes, record players, vibra-sonic, tuck-n-roll seats, trim removed (shaved), etc. Cars for show, cars for fast, cars for purpose of hauling surfboards to the beach, and the drive-in movies.

Not a criticism, but you forgot "cars for cruising", a favorite pastime.

Good catch. American Graffiti. "Where were you, in sixty-two?"

"Let's take a trip down Whittier Boulevard"

Or Harbor, or Colorado, or Lakewood, or Balboa in Newport, or PCH from San Diego to Santa Barbara, etc.

Truth_seeker, just curious. Do you recall how the police, LA Sheriffs and LAPD, possibly also the CHP if I recall, would establish stations along Hollywood Blvd and check "cruisers" for how low the cars were (there was a limit) and how loud exhaust pipes were? They were attempting to discourage cruising since some nights, especially weekends, there would be a ton of cars out there? Never thought at the time as to how the abundance of vehicles and how sloooowww cruisers drove (gotta see and be seen, ya know) must have driven regular citizens and tourists crazy. Now that I'm older I realize this but I would still do it all over again. It was fun.

My main hangout in high school was Whittier Blvd. back and forth between Whittier and La Habra.

The cops watched, but left you alone unless you did "exhibition of speed" or some outrageous equipment violation.

I mentioned all those other places to indicate how far and wide the scene stretched. When I outgrew it, I didn't keep up. Married, moved away a little, etc.

Instead of cruising, we were sitting around living rooms,  listening to FM radio later--late 60s.

Andy White, session drummer who played for the Beatles and Tom Jones, dies at 85

White was a drummer who, after a tour of the U.S. in the late 1950s backing various rock-and-roll musicians, was hired in 1962 to cut some tracks for the Beatles. Pete Best, the Beatles' original drummer, had bombed an attempt at recording their first single, "Love Me Do," which had a shuffle beat Best could not handle. Best's replacement, Ringo Starr, played better, but George Martin wanted to try recording the track with a professional session drummer. White's recording was not substantially different from Starr's, but Martin chose the version with White's drumming for most of the single releases. White would record two further songs with the group, "P.S. I Love You" and "Please Please Me;" he only received session pay for his work and no cut of royalties.

He would later chart another hit backing Tom Jones on "It's Not Unusual." He continued session drumming and some touring work, including a U.S. tour with Marlene Dietrich. Drumming up until at least 2008, White died of a stroke on November 9.

Toussaint, a native of New Orleans, wrote and produced a number of songs that would go on to become hits, including "Working in a Coal Mine" (a hit for Lee Dorsey and later Devo), "I Like It Like That" (a top-10 hit for the Dave Clark Five), "A Certain Girl" (a minor hit for Warren Zevon), "Lipstick Traces on a Cigarette" (a minor hit for the O'Jays), "Southern Nights" (a big hit for Glen Campbell) and "Play Something Sweet" (one of the last hits for Three Dog Night). Being forced to leave New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina, Toussaint began touring as a performer for the first time in his late 60s; he continued to do so the rest of his life, dying of a heart attack while still on tour in Spain.

"Pioneering stripper Carol Doda dies at 78"

"SAN FRANCISCO — Legendary San Francisco stripper Carol Doda, whose splashy act helped introduce topless entertainment to the city more than 50 years ago, died at age 78.

Doda died Monday in the city from complications of kidney failure, friend Ron Minolla disclosed Wednesday.

Doda first went topless in 1964 at the Condor Club — a move that changed every nightspot on busy Broadway in San Francisco.

During its heyday in the early 1970s, the street in North Beach buzzed with more than two dozen clubs where carnival-like barkers beckoned passers-by to watch bare-breasted dancers. The era spanned some 20 years.

Doda later had an acting role in "Head," a 1968 film featuring the Monkees, and was profiled in Tom Wolfe's book "The Pump House Gang."

"When the (beatniks) were handing the torch to the hippies, a girl named Carol Doda changed the world from a pole at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Broadway," her friend Lee Housekeeper said.

Doda, known for her augmented bust, rode onto stage atop a piano on an elevator platform, debuting her act the same day President Lyndon B. Johnson drew half-a-million people in a visit to San Francisco."

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/4740760-181/pioneering-stripper-carol-doda-dies?page=1

Doda was very well known for what the article calls her "augmented bust".

My memory tells me that Wolfe, in the "Pump House Gang", relates the story of how SF vice officers once pulled over a convertible with Doda in it because they thought she was so flamboyant she had to be a cross dresser. Doda got out of the car and started screaming at the officers how she was a close friend of some SF bigwig, possibly a cop, and was in fact having, uh, carnal relations with him. The vice cops, thoroughly cowed, sheepishly withdrew and Doda went on her way.

[float=right](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2f/Warren_Mitchell.jpg/220px-Warren_Mitchell.jpg)[/float]Warren Mitchell, English actor, dies at 89

Little-known in the United States, Mitchell is best known in his native United Kingdom for originating the role of Alf Garnett on the sitcom Till Death Us Do Part. The Garnett character, a dimwitted right-wing satire of working-class conservatives, would later be adapted for sitcoms around the world, including the United States, where Norman Lear adapted the character into Archie Bunker for his own sitcom, All in the Family. (The casting of the Jewish Mitchell as an antisemite was a major source of ironic humor for the series.) Mitchell's roles also included parts in the 1960s TV series The Avengers and Secret Agent Man, both of which were syndicated worldwide.

Outside the UK, Mitchell also played Willy Loman in numerous performances of Death of a Salesman; playwright Arthur Miller would later describe Mitchell as one of his favorite actors.

Class personified: Nick Bockwinkel dies (Hall of Fame professional wrestler)

Quote
During his heyday as one of the most articulate heels of all time, Nick Bockwinkel, who died Saturday at the age of 80, had a secret weapon, and for those familiar with his eloquent discourses on the state of the world during interviews, it shouldn't surprise: it was a dictionary. Well, actually it wasn't one dictionary, but many. He had a little notebook that he wrote down interesting words into, and began to learn them and their meanings.

"I used to use the four, five or six syllable words as best I could," expounded Bockwinkel in The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels. "If I ran across one I didn't know, I had a little dictionary. I would have this little dictionary, with 70 or 80 words, that I would always be perusing. I had it with me all the time. Automatically, some of these words just starting coming to me in my interviews because I was familiar with them."

With his passing after many years battling memory issues, the world is robbed of one of the classiest individuals ever to step into the wrestling ring – or to the microphone.

Keith Michell, the Australian-born actor and director who has died aged 88, was celebrated for his many imposing stage and screen performances as Henry VIII.

Michell came to monopolise one of British history's favourite subjects for dramatisation. Such was the charm of this burly, sturdy, square-set, square-jawed, mellifluous upstart from the Antipodes that when he revived Shakespeare's King Henry VIII at the Chichester Festival in 1991 he could with justice claim to have made the part of the much-married monarch his own for a quarter of a century.

"Farewell to the man who invented 'climate change’"

Subtitle: "To this day, global climate policy is still shaped by the agenda of Maurice Strong, a Canadian multimillionaire

"A very odd thing happened last weekend. The death was announced of the man who, in the past 40 years, has arguably been more influential on global politics than any other single individual. Yet the world scarcely noticed.

Had it not been for this man, we would not last week have seen 150 heads of government joining 40,000 delegates in Paris for that mammoth climate conference: the 21st such get-together since, in 1992, he masterminded the Rio “Earth Summit”, the largest political gathering in history. Yet few people even know his name.

[snip]

In the Sixties, having become very rich himself from Canada’s oil industry, Strong came to see that the key to his vision was “environmentalism”, the one cause the UN could harness to make itself a truly powerful world government.

A superb political operator, in 1972 he set up a UN “Environment Conference” in Stockholm, to declare that the Earth’s resources were the common inheritance of all mankind. They should no longer be exploited for the benefit of only a few countries, at the expense of poorer countries across the globe.

To pursue this, he became founding director of a new agency, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and in the Eighties he took up the cause of a tiny group of international meteorologists who had come to believe that the world faced catastrophic warming. In 1988, UNEP sponsored this little group into setting up the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

In 1992, now allied with the IPCC, Strong pulled off his greatest coup when he set up another new body, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to stage that colossal “Earth Summit” over which he presided in Rio, arranging for it to be attended not only by 108 world leaders and 100,000 others but also by 20,000 UN-funded “green activists”.

One of the good guys and he died far too young.

"Avi Davis -- a friend of mine, but far more importantly an unstinting friend of liberty -- passed away Monday morning at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.  In these times, whenever such a person dies, it is extremely unfortunate; when he is taken from us at the young age of 57, it is a tragedy we must all mourn.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Avi Davis did many extraordinary things, but he is best known to us here in the U.S. as the founder and president of the American Freedom Alliance. There is no clearer description of the principles and goals to which Avi Davis dedicated his life than that organization's mission statement:

The American Freedom Alliance is a non-aligned movement which promotes, defends and upholds Western values and ideals. The Alliance sponsors conferences, publishes opinions, distributes information and creates networking groups to identify threats to Western civilization and to motivate, educate and unite citizens in support of that cause.

The illuminating, exoterical, astronomical George Clayton Johnson has died. The genius science-fiction writer behind so much of what we've all watched and enjoyed has passed on to his next adventure.

George Clayton Johnson wrote the very first episode of Star Trek, The Man Trap; he wrote eight original Twilight Zone episodes for series creator Rod Serling including "Nothing in the Dark", "Kick the Can", "A Game of Pool", and "A Penny for Your Thoughts" ...

George is perhaps most well-known for the 1967 science fiction classic, Logan's Run, which he co-wrote, it was a box-office hit and an Oscar winning film for MGM in 1976 ...

Henderson was a major star in Major League Baseball between 1986 and 1991; he was a key member of the Boston Red Sox' unsuccessful World Series appearance in 1986 and appeared in all three of the Oakland Athletics' World Series appearances from 1988 to 1990, including the 1989 win. An MLB All-Star in 1991, Henderson blew out his knee in 1992 and never regained his all-star form, retiring in 1994; in 1997, he became a broadcaster with the Seattle Mariners, a role he held until 2006 (and returned to briefly in 2011). Lemon played for the Harlem Globetrotters from 1955 to 1978, becoming the face of the franchise. After dabbling in other barnstorming teams through the 1980s and 1990s, Lemon came out of retirement in 1994 for a farewell tour with the Globetrotters. All in all, Lemon played in over 10,000 basketball games in his lifetime and, at the peak of his popularity in the 1970s, was a character on Saturday morning television.

Meadowlark was from a time before so many black folk went around angry all the time. Before they started taking on names like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Muhammed Ali. Anyone see an Islam connection here?

I saw him as a kid, but I can't remember if it was in Youngstown, or if we drove to Cleveland or Pittsburgh to see the Globetrotters.

All I know is that Meadowlark was the star, and I was hooked on the Globetrotters for years after that.

His distinctive and guttural vocal style was a major influence on punk rock and would come back into vogue in the 1990s. His Rickenbacker bass and playing style was influential on hard-driving heavy metal.

Frank Malzone, Star Fielder for Boston Red Sox, Dies at 85

Quote
Frank Malzone, a six-time All-Star third baseman whose steady presence in the Boston lineup tied together two of the city's baseball eras, linking Ted Williams's Red Sox with Carl Yastrzemski's, died on Tuesday at his home in Needham, Mass. He was 85.

The Red Sox announced his death.

Malzone played with the Red Sox from 1955 to 1965, not a period of distinction for the franchise — the team never finished higher than third — even though it was led by two future Hall of Fame outfielders: Williams, who retired in 1960, not having played in a World Series since 1946, and Yastrzemski, who arrived in 1961 and finally led the team to a pennant in 1967. As one Boston hero passed the torch to the other, Malzone was a stalwart supporting player for both.

It's OK. Sometimes a person is notable enough to have their own thread (although I don't necessarily think Rogers fits that bill, it happens and I don't consider it that big of a deal). This is a summary thread anyway.

Chart-topping R&B singer Natalie Cole, who followed her legendary father into the music business with hits like “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and “Unforgettable,” died at age 65.

“Natalie Cole, sister beloved & of substance and sound. May her soul rest in peace,” tweeted the Rev. Jesse Jackson on New Year’s Day.

Cole, who had struggled with a variety of health issues in recent years, died Thursday night, according to publicist Maureen O’Connor. The cause of death was reportedly congestive heart failure.

A physically weakened Cole, winner of nine Grammy Awards, was forced to cancel a string of concert performances over the last three months after a recurrence of hepatitis C linked to her earlier drug abuse ....

And he was a conservative. Loved that guy. One of the reasons he left M*A*S*H* was because Alda made it way too preachy liberal for him to take anymore.

I still watch the old reruns. The ones with him are still the best and straight up funny.

Atkins was one of the first players to take advantage of free substitution (the ability to play solely on offense or defense) when it became popular in the 1950s and specialized in the right defensive end position, often attacking quarterbacks from the weak side. At 6'8, 257 pounds, Atkins played 16 seasons in the NFL, most of those with the Chicago Bears (he also was a member of the inaugural New Orleans Saints roster). Considered one of the best pass rushers of all time, Atkins played in eight Pro Bowls was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. He died December 30 of numerous unspecified illnesses and was in significant pain toward the end of his life, although all indications were that he was sound of mind.
