Trump administration ends 25-year migrant protections for two countries
Story by Dan Gooding • 20h
The Trump administration is ending over 25 years of protections for immigrants from two countries: Nicaragua and Honduras.
In notices published in the Federal Register on Monday morning, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it would allow the current Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for both countries to lapse as of July 5, affecting roughly 50,000 people.
The move follows the cancellation of several other TPS designations by the DHS in recent months, with the Trump administration arguing that these designations have been abused or allowed to continue without sufficient scrutiny.
Immigration advocacy groups have warned that revoking protections puts immigrants at risk of deportation to countries still not safe enough to return to.
