Poll: Sarah Palin tops list of women Americans want to run for president
By Paul Bedard | MARCH 27, 2014 AT 9:56 AM

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the darling of the Tea Party movement, tops a new list of women other than Hillary Clinton who Americans want to run for president.

A series of Economist/YouGov polls, wrapped up in an article released this week, found overwhelming support for women candidates and a woman president, and has Palin on top of eight women most often mentioned by voters as their top choice to run.

Because Clinton is the runaway favorite potential woman candidate in a number of polls, the Economist/YouGov poll asked this question: “Other than Hillary Clinton, is their any other woman you would want to run for president either in 2016 or 2020?”

Some 49 women were named, and only eight received a total vote of 1 percent or more of the nearly 1,000 Americans polled. Palin won with 8 percent, followed by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former George W. Bush Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at 8 percent each. First lady Michelle Obama was named by 1 percent.

It is unclear if Palin is considering a bid, though her supporters want her to run. She has remained active in GOP and Tea Party politics and on TV. As a result, only 8 percent in the poll said they were not familiar enough with Palin to form an opinion on her.

Other findings:

– 65 percent say the country is ready for a woman president.

– 54 percent think most people would vote for a woman candidate for president.

– 61 percent would have confidence in a female president’s ability to deal with an international crisis.

Palin won because of name recognition.

If the GOP had brains and wants to win they need to get a woman out there early and KNOWN, even if it is just to be a VP.

History Repeats Itself, part deux.

So now HISTORY and social justice demand we have a woman president next? Will the physically challenged be far behind?  – I guess being black and mentally challenged Obama covered a couple bases.

Clearly, Sarah Palin's personal marketing campaign is working.  She's made a career of enticing her fans with the proposition that she might one day actually run for president.  I never thought a poker player could succeed over the long term by bluffing every hand, but Sarah Palin has shown me to be wrong.  Sarah is smart enough to know that there is a name for people like her who actually do run for POTUS: Michelle Bachmann.

Not that I blame her, mind you.  More power to her, I say.  I think I'm on safe ground when I say it won't be presidential power.

I'd like to see a woman as President in my lifetime.  But Palin's not it.  And it scares the wits out of me that Clinton will be.
I won't vote for a woman only on her gender.

Other than Hillary Clinton
I would have been more impressed if Palin actually had topped Clinton.

Intelligent people don't make a candidate's gender or skin color the reason to vote for that person, but there are a whole lot of unintelligent people out there casting votes. Thus, President Obama. Thus, Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee.   **nononono*

Exactly. I've spoken to quite a few union democrats from up North. They are finally disgusted with Obama but each and every one of them. (Most especially the male chauvinist pigs that live to hunt and hunt to live and stuff the kill.) say that it is time for a woman President, with Hillary Clinton. Everyone is rendered to silence with this. The debate ends. They don't give two hoots or know where Benghazi is. (The last person I spoke to regarding this, thought it was a man, Ben Ghazi!)

To me this would not be cowering to socialistic profiles of the left having a woman President- that is not Hillary.
It is simply, very politically astute. It is simply making-the-playing-field--even. The dems have the advantages of Obama's get out the vote cheat machine. To overcome this and actually win, we must make the playing field even. Take-away Hillary Clinton's only two things. 1-being a woman to claim the historic value 2-name recognition. And what do we have? Her lack of experience and failures. The only way to expose Hildebeast for a win, it to strip her of these two things.

Totally agree.  Love your Michelle Bachmann reference.  Spot on.  But give her credit, she has parlayed a profitable little gig for herself.  I applaud her for that.

What is MB doing with herself these days?  What will she do once her string runs out in congress?

She will do what they all do. Write a book.

Is it a coincidence that West, (taken down with his own party redistricting)he just released a book- Bachmann, Palin, Cain all were made to be wacko birds? Will some fancy footwork make Cruz go away and write a book?

I'm a dummy, and I'll admit it.

I am not interested in voting for a woman to be president. For the overwhelming majority of females (as in 99.9999999999999999999999999%), the intestinal fortitude simply is not there, when life-or-death decisions must be made. They cannot be trusted or relied upon to do the right thing. It's simply not "in their nature".

Having said that, there have been exceptions in history, but those ladies stand out all the more because they WERE exceptions to the rule. Of course, Lady Thatcher comes to mind, but they didn't call her "the Iron Lady" for nuthin'.

The only woman I could stand to vote for, well, she's the one who won the poll above. And I specifically wrote posts against her on TOS when she was first picked by McCain back in '08. But I came around...

So have at it. Call me a misogynist if you wish. But with one exception, I ain't gonna be votin' for no wimmen for president!    :P

The other day you outright said to call you a racist, you didn't care. Now this post saying, call you a misogynist, you don't care.

You're a racist, misogynist-at least you admit it all. Fred Flintstone would agree with you. I hope the Archie Bunkers are the very small minority nowadays.

I don't think women should be on the front line in combat. But any other job, especially President or VP should be wide open for a woman to do. The above quoted statement has to be the most horrendous statement I have seen. I guess there are still two Archie Bunker's remaining in this country. How sad, for you.

Broadly speaking, men and women are constrained or aided by their genetic potential and by phylogenic differences, giving each gender neurological strengths and weaknesses. However, to say that, as a rule, one gender is incapable, well, that's really pushing it – except, of course, when it comes to menstruation and pregnancy. I'm pretty sure I'm incapable.

Just remember this. If it wasn't for half of people, the other half would be all of them.  ^-^
