Campaigns secretly prep for brokered GOP convention
Candidates, outside groups and party officials are quietly maneuvering for a nomination fight that goes all the way to the bitter end.

Mysterious outside groups are asking state parties for personal data on potential delegates, Republican campaigns are drawing up plans to send loyal representatives to obscure local conventions, and party officials are dusting off rule books to brush up on a process that hasn’t mattered for decades.
As Donald Trump and Ted Cruz divide up the first primaries and center-right Republicans tear one another apart in a race to be the mainstream alternative, Republicans are waging a shadow primary for control of delegates in anticipation of what one senior party official called “the white whale of politics”: a contested national convention.
The endgame for the most sophisticated campaigns is an inconclusive first ballot leading to a free-for-all power struggle on the floor in Cleveland.
“This is going to be a convention like I’ve never seen in my lifetime,” said veteran operative Barry Bennett, who managed Ben Carson’s campaign until December and is now advising Donald Trump. “It’s going to be contentious from Day One.”
The primaries and caucuses that dot the nominating calendar and whose results drive headlines will decide whom most delegates are bound to vote for on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention. Should the first ballot fail to produce a nominee, the outcome of the convention will depend on results of the parallel primary now underway for the hearts and minds of delegates.

I will add to this that the rules for a party convention at any level are made by the Rules Committee prior to the convention, members of which are elected, assigned, or volunteer to be on that committee.
In otherwards, before each convention there are no rules, there is a blank slate to where the rules are voted on and approved. Most Rules committees use past conventions' rules as a guide, but are not required to adopt them.
-
If the GOPe thinks they have a problem with Donald Trump on their hands, wait until they see what happens if they try and broker in another Bush.
It will literally kill, murder, destroy, off, kaput, fini, annihilate, pulverize, and end the Republican Party.

Another key committee is the Credentials Committee. :smokin:

Yes sir it is. That a whole other area where those of ulterior intent can game the system.

That is EXACTLY right but I must add the fact that the body of the convention itself must adopt what the rules committee proposes and their proposal can very definitely be amended by that same body!
Edit to add the fact that the members of the convention itself must approve the permanent members of all permanent committees and are free to remove and replace any and all members of any temporary committees before any permanent committee is finally approved.

Yes, very important points that need added, because they add several levels to the ability to game the system.

I don't know if the problem is so much Trump, as he has only 35% of the total who would vote for Republican. It's the 65% that are divided among the other candidates, mostly Cruz and Rubio. And fully 2 thirds of that 65% said they would not vote for Trump - period. That should scare the RNC, if Trump looks like he may reach the required number of delegates. It should scare all of us, because Trump will lose the general.

The only way to save the GOP is to reject Trump. Let his followers stew, scream, rant, and stay home on Election Day, or vote for him as an independent. I could care less about such fools. They should be drummed out of the party, just as Buckley did in the sixties with the anti-Semites and Birchers.

It doesn't work, considering the level of support Trump garners from white nationalists.

The American primary system is a disaster. Maybe it's time to give Strange Women Lying in Ponds Giving Out Swords a second look.
