Negative perceptions. During a Senate hearing, military officials blamed “negative publicity” for the public’s misunderstanding of what serving in the military is like, but lawmakers brought up problems like sexual assault and poor housing conditions as possible reasons potential recruits would pass on joining, Defense One reports. The Navy will meet its enlisted active duty accession goal in 2022, but will fall short in its Reserve recruitment.
Submariner training. U.S. lawmakers want the Navy to begin training Australian sailors as soon as possible so they can use their new submarines through the AUKUS deal as soon as they become available, Defense One reports. The House’s 2023 defense bill includes language for a training program; however, the Senate version—which has still not passed—does not.
