Polio is ‘likely’ present and spreading in NYC, health officials warn

By Zach Williams
August 12, 2022

Health officials say the poliovirus is “likely” spreading in the five boroughs after traces were found in city wastewater.

“The risk to New Yorkers is real but the defense is so simple – get vaccinated against polio,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said in a press release Friday.

The virus has also been detected in Orange and Rockland counties north of New York City in recent weeks.

A Rockland man, who was unvaccinated, experienced paralysis after catching the first known case of the disease in the United States since 2013.

“For every one case of paralytic polio identified, hundreds more may be undetected,” state Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett said in the press release.

Several thousand paralyzed people in NY are "undetected"? Why do I find that statement dubious?

There is a chasm between people becoming infected with the weakened non-paralyzing virus used in vaccines used outside of the US and vast numbers of people being paralyzed. Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett appears to be trying to bridge that chasm with panic-mongering hype.

I doubt the reference was intended to mean there are thousands of people becoming paralyzed without anyone noticing, but rather that there were thousands of cases of infection with the polio virus that do not lead to obvious paralysis, but which might still result in the infection being spread around.

The point is that polio infection does not necessarily mean paralysis.  For every 600 or so infections, one may result in paralysis.  People may be infected with polio, but not realize that it is polio.

Symptoms of polio differ from case to case.

Non Paralytic Polio -
This does not cause paralysis and usually causes flu like symptoms such as:
Sore throat
Fever
Headache
Vomiting
Weakness and fatigue
Back pain, neck pain or stiffness
Meningitis
Muscle tenderness or weakness

Paralytic Polio
Loss of reflexes
Severe muscle weakness and pain
Floppy and loose limbs (flaccid paralysis)

Post Polio Syndrome
The patient experiences symptoms several years after they have had polio.
Fatigue and Weakness after minimal activity

Hey most of those symptoms for non paralytic are the same as Covid, should we expect the evil elf to start a new panic using the polio infections as new more special Covid?

The difference here is that there is a vaccine for polio.

Well, it's ok to let ILLEGALS into TX but it's not ok to let ILLEGALS into NY!

Actually, the vector appears to not have been from the Southern border.

Understood, my response was a sarcastic question as to whether Fauci would use the shared symptoms to beat the Covid drum.

If not from the south then who do we blame...the Canadians?

Most likely it had a middle eastern origin, probably a Jewish person who traveled there and picked it up.  There are a significant number of orthodox and ultra-orthodox who are opposed to vaccinations of all sorts, and they can be a problem.

As per another article (link below):

At a polio vaccine clinic in Monsey, tensions between Orthodox and secular residents

The area, where an Orthodox Jewish man contracted the first U.S. case of polio in a decade, has long been a center of vaccine hesitancy

By Rina Shamilov
July 26, 2022

MONSEY, N.Y. — When Barry Kupfer learned that the first U.S. polio case in a decade had emerged near his home in Monsey, New York, he knew immediately that he wanted to be vaccinated against the virus.

Rockland County, which has the largest Jewish population per capita of any county in the U.S., has a childhood vaccination rate against polio of 42%, the lowest in New York State.  It is also a place where tensions between the area’s ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, communities and their secular neighbors have long existed over public health as well as other issues.

There was a measles outbreak among the area’s Haredi population in 2019 and it was an early hot spot for COVID-19 as the pandemic began in 2020.

There are two varieties/technologies of polio vaccine in current use worldwide. The vaccine approved for use in the US is not a live virus vaccine. The non-paralyzing (= weakened) live virus vaccine is cheaper to produce is is used in more cost-sensitive areas, such as Africa. With this vaccine, the weakened virus infects the recipient, whose immune system "learns" how to recognize and fight the wild polio virus. During the time the recipient is infected there is a time period in which they are shedding the virus in their BMs. In areas where waste disposal and hygiene are rudimentary or worse, this weakened virus can spread to random unvaccinated people.

The variety of polio virus that has been detected in NY and in the London England area is of the live virus vaccine type. Because this vaccine is not used in the US, it means that it came to the US via a recently vaccinated person from a third world country or an unvaccinated US resident who got infected while visiting a third world country. Figuring out the continent of origin may be a bit difficult or impossible, since both the London and NYC areas have several international airports and are major hubs for worldwide travel.

The dangers of the weakened virus are with people in poor health and that over the course of several hosts, the weakened virus could mutate into a less benign variant.

And now I have an Over-Explainers Annoymorous meeting to lead, wink777 .

I had my polio vaccines in the mid-late 1950's -- approaching 70 years ago.

Can they still be effective after that long...?

Yes, @Fishrrman  Even the smallpox Vaccine you had back then, when they made real vaccines, probably even protects you from rump ranger rash.
   Not implying anything.
