Title: Country Classics

Rodney Crowell may not be that well known outside of country circles, but he has written songs for Willie Nelson, and was married to Johnny Cash's daughter.

He is also one of the best songwriters to have ever been born in MY opinion. I once saw him on a Austin City Limits Songwriters Special with Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovette, and he did a heart brake song he wrote that had Willie Nelson crying before it was over.

Anyhow, this is one of my personal favorites by him.

If we're gonna play Rodney Crowell, we have to include this one:

One story I heard about this song is that they were all riding in the back of a pickup coming home from a gig. They started strumming and the song just appeared out of thin air. They claim they had the whole thing written in 10 minutes.

I love George Jones. A voice and a soul in perfect harmony with every one of life's pains and scars.

Many - a lot - of Jones' songs are about drinking because that was something he knew a lot about. He would frequently miss appointments and even gigs because he simply too drunk to get there. This is how he earned the sobriquet "No Show Jones". His constant drinking both hurt and enhanced his career. He was hurt by all the noshows, but at the same time he wrote a dozen or more hit songs about drinking. So in the long run it all came out even.

Thank you kindly for that song - I hadn't heard it in a long while, and I really enjoyed playing along on my old Yamaha FG-160 while drinking some bourbon...

Did that song Karaoke in Chicago. They had never heard it before. Of course it was bar so they were drinking. I had those guys rolling laughing singing along like maniacs. It was a good time. I remember it well. Even got a free beer! LOL
Blew the roof off the joint.

This was another one of my go-to hits that never failed.

Since this thread has brought back a lot of memories it made me remember this favorite too.
Big hit in Chicago Pubs. BTW, this was 'live' with actual band.
Of course there were no karaoke lyrics or notes for these song.
I already knew all the lyrics and I would talk to band to give them a general meter.
Grab the mic and start tapping my foot to the tune for a few seconds.
After I sang the first line they knew where it was going and followed me by ear improve style.
It wasn't perfect, but it was more than 'good enough' for a drunk bar or field afterdark.

My goodness, had such a Great time! So much fun for me and friends... LOL. and the audiences always 'loved' it.

Many times when I finished they would tap me on the shoulder with 'Good Job' or hand me a beer or whatever.
And that was in Chicago. Imagine if I did a set in Texas or Alabama? It was something I will never forget.
I have to thank everybody responsible for posting this thread. As was already said haven't thought of this stuff in decades.
It was a real pleasure to remember those days I had forgotten.

Pretty much anything written or performed by Rodney works for me. If he ever wrote or performed a song I didn't enjoy,I never heard it.

If music written and performed by George Jones doesn't qualify as country classic,I guess Hank Williams would be off the list too,and we ALL know that would be impossible.

Speaking of Hank........

Rodney Crowell was part of the sweet singing angel Emmylou Harris' Hot Band in the late 70's. He co-wrote 'Tulsa Queen,' one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

With the usual sweet pickin' from Albert Lee.

Stumbled across a Hank song from early in his career I'd never heard - Outlaw Women. Damn good song, grew with alot of those in this blue collar town. About as close to country blues as you can get:

MY GAWD! She has people like Alvin Lee and Rodney Crowell playing in her band????? I am a huge fan of Rodney, but Alvin Lee was one of the greatest guitarists to ever play a note. This had to be back in the day before anyone dreamed up the name of "Super Band".

Then add that sweet, sweet voice of hers to the mix,and it's almost overkill.

Sorry,my mistake. I saw the words "playing guitar" and A Lee,and just jumped to the assumption it was Alvin Lee.

I agree.

I wish the audio quality were better, though. I can barely make out what Emmy Lou is singing. I guess part of it is due to my hearing loss, but that can't be all of it.

Nah you ain't wrong @sneakypete it's a little distorted, I didn't catch everything she was singing either.
