She was known as the queen of country rock in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, but Linda Ronstadt has always been so much more.

She’s sold 100 million records and won 10 Grammys for songs in wildly different musical genres, including rock, country, Latin, and pop. When she tried her hand at opera, she received a Tony Award nod and a Golden Globe nomination for her stage and screen roles in The Pirates of Penzance. For decades it seemed there was nothing Linda couldn’t do—or sing. But things took a turn in 2000, when her once-powerhouse voice began to fail her.

"I'd start to sing and then it would just clamp up," Linda told CBS Sunday Morning in early 2019. "My voice would freeze. And I said, 'There's something wrong with my voice.' And people would say, 'Oh, you're just a perfectionist.' I go, 'No, there's really something systemically wrong.’”

Today, she looks vaguely familiar to someone that's been in the news lately

Her work with Nelson Riddle was awesome.  What's New? is perfection.

Unique album cover:

That album of Spanish songs is reasonably good.  Great voice, really, in her music. And I'd not forget the Stone Poneys either.

Now, I see this song is pretty standard but I had not heard others sing it prior.

With apologies to the Dude, she gave the Eagles their start.

That's right... And MAN, I had a thing for her back in the day... Tanya Tucker won out, but still....

And 'Desperado' Eagles ft Ronstadt ... nothing since has ever been as good. that was the best.

I have that collection and she was supreme.

I don't agree with her politics, but her voice was beautiful. Are You Still Within The Sound Of My Voice can make me cry.

My mom was a classically trained vocalist and pianist. From her early teens to her early 20’s in the mid 1940’s she sang locally with a local opera company and also with a big band, often featured on local radio in the Harrisburg and Philly PA area. While she enjoyed signing Big Band music, opera was her real passion and she was good, very good.  At one point her vocal teacher told her that she had progressed too far, way far beyond his ability to train her any further and that she had a great talent and encouraged her to go to NY to study which she did.

Right around the time she met my father a year after WWII ended she was offered an audition with the Metropolitan Opera - a rare and prestigious opportunity. But my father had just proposed to her and she choose another path. I guess my brother and I can be glad for that, along with my father.

I remember as a child, my mother turning on the Metropolitan Opera Saturday afternoon matinee live broadcast and singing along. While I really couldn’t appreciate it at the time, I now understand what a beautiful voice she had, a lyric soprano who if she had taken a different path, one where she didn’t marry my father and give birth to me and my brother, she may have been as famous as Beverly Sills or my mother’s favorite opera singer – Leontyne Price.

Yes, and she was really that good and not only in my opinion but some years after her death in 1996, I met a man who was in the radio business back when and who knew my mother back when she sang on the radio and who told me that she had the voice of an angel and had been offered several contracts to sing with some rather famous big bands at the time along with several opera companies, and could have even had a movie career if she wanted as she was also quite beautiful.

When I was in my later teens, my mom hated most of the pop and rock music I was listening too - most of which she called screeching and caterwauling.

But one day, just after I bought my first stereo system one of the first cassette tapes I bought was Linda Ronstadt’s Greatest Hits.

My mom came in my room, I think the song playing at the time was Blue Bayou and I thought a first was going to tell me to turn it down, but actually she wanted to know who that signer was as she thought she had a beautiful voice, great vocal control, was in my mother’s opinion, very talented and not singing to her true potential. I was shocked.

Her work with Nelson Riddle was awesome.  What's New? is perfection.
Years later for Christmas I bought my mother the Linda Ronstadt Nelson Riddle album “What’s New” and she also found it perfection. She also loved the Gloria Estefan album Mi Tierra. Gloria Estefan another signer who my mother thought had a really good voice.

I’ve often wondered what my mother would have made of Amy Lee of Evanescence.

This Lowell George tune by her is one of my favorites. She has a voice that rings like a bell, and she can make you so sad you want to cry,and happy about it at the same time.

It also needs to be said that she must have been a VERY nice person off stage, because I don't remember ever hearing one single negative comment about her by anyone else in the music biz,and if there is place in existence with more back-stabbing prima-donnas,I'm not aware of it.

As everyone else has already said, she could sing any type of music, and sing it so well she would make you like it,even if you weren't a fan of that type of music,or didn't understand the language.

The first time I ever saw her in concert was when the Eagles came out with their second album and Linda Ronstadt had just released her "Heart like a Wheel" album. She opened for the Eagles, and for her finale, she sang "Desperado" with a minimum of instruments. It was enough to stop your freaking heart. Then,at the encore, she did "Willing" and invited the Eagles on stage to play with her. Which was enough to get your heart going again.

The Eagles came on and apologized that another act that was on the ticket failed to show, but told the crowd to not worry about it "because we are going to play every damn song we know before we quit!" They pretty much did, too. This was in Norfolk Va in 1974,and the song they picked to play to open the encore was Chuck Berry's "Promised Land". "I left my home in Norfolk,Va,California on my mind....."The place freaking exploded! This was the first reserved seat concert I ever went to,and the people on the floor were tearing up the seats and throwing them up against the wall to make room to dance. I can't remember how many more songs they played, but they OWNED that freaking place that night. How the HELL do you top "Promised Land" when you did it as well as Chuck ever did it?

BTW,once the stadium owners forced them off-stage,they went to a bar at the ocean front in Virginia Beach, and asked the owners and the bar band "Would it be ok if we played a few songs?",and I was told they did another hour or so there, and nobody, not even the bar owner had any idea they were coming.

If this wasn't the best concert I ever went to,it's tied for first.

Great story @sneakypete. I really enjoyed that.

J.D. Souther was part of the mix with them too. He helped give the Eagles their sound.  I think he was romantically involved with Linda. What a blend of talent!

Maybe, but I always heard she is a lesbian. I THINK I might have even seen an interview where she said she was,but don't bet money on it.

@sneakypete

Well, she was connected to Governor Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown. So, there’s that.

@Lando Lincoln

They were supposed to be each other's "beard" was the story I got.

It's the only thing she had done that I know of that made me lose respect for her. Jerry Brown???????

The Music Category can be so rife with stressful Briefers arguing the latest Trump tweet and downright complicated at times, requiring 4 full time Moderators.  Get with the program folks and don't bitch until you've walked a mile in my shoes.     :smokin:

@sneakypete you are 1 of 4 Category Moderators in MUSIC.  I think you are hitting the MODIFY button instead of reply, possibly during a QUOTE.
You only see that button in this Category.

@sneakypete  you knew it was bound to happen, even obummer talked about it today, the old white men are the first to go when the world is looking for scapegoats.  You brought the Music Cat alive again over a year ago, your first mistake was asking me to join you here.  As usual we're the first to go. It was a good run.

Great story @sneakypete. I really enjoyed that.

Jackson Browne (Sunny Hills HS, Fullerton CA class of 1965 I think)  was also involved with he, and with the early Eagles
