Title: A tribute to Glen Campbell on the 2nd anniversary of his passing
Post by: AllThatJazzZ on August 09, 2019, 02:17:00 am
Glen physically left us two years ago today, although in actuality, he left us long before that. I was familiar with and enjoyed his hits, but I never considered myself a fan. I didn't know much about him and the troubles he got himself into until they were mentioned in news reports upon his passing (although I had heard that he'd become a Christian at some point).

As so many do, I went to YouTube after he passed to hear some of his music and see what else I could learn about him. I was amazed to learn so much about the magnitude of his talent as well as the measure of the man himself. I'll admit that I've now become a devotee of Glen and every aspect of his incredible musical talent: his guitar work, his singing, his ability to entertain. And so, for two years I've been making up for lost time and enjoying myself thoroughly in the pursuit. I will admit that there are numerous times I've wanted to kick myself for never even considering attending any of his concerts or appearances.

An obit of sorts from his manager...
Glen Campbell was put on this earth to play music
"Sir, you can't play that guitar."

I could go on and on about Glen. I realize he's not cool enough for some people, but I get the biggest kick out of reading the comment section and seeing these extremely cool guys who never gave him a second thought post their amazement and appreciation for his musical abilities. Many but not all know that he did what he did without being able to read one note of music. His was a true gift, and he developed and honed it to the delight of millions. I'm so glad I finally caught up, although I'm sad that it was after his passing.

See in the opening sequence, Glen Campbell on the cover of this album by Al De Lory interpreting GC's songs. It looks like it would be quite an album to have.  It sounds like they say De Lory did the theme to MASH, so, an artist in his own right.

Al De Lory / Wichita Lineman

Glen Campbell did a lot of duets, had his own show, here he does I believe the James Taylor song (JT did a version of Wichita Lineman, interesting).

Glen Campbell/Linda Ronstadt - Carolina On My Mind

Glen Campbell - Albuquerque

And Glen did live there some. He probably has a bio/autobio like a good amount of these artists do. I relistened to this, actually a pretty nice song...

Jimmy Webb wrote Galveston, his version is so very different.... I heard some of his much earlier versions of the song than this, so different than Glen's:  @AllThatJazzZ

This version is pretty good nonetheless.... maybe you already knew of these early versions.

@TomSea

Thanks for posting. Jimmy's an amazing songwriter. Singing? Not so much. I'm glad Glen did his own take on it. It wasn't my favorite GC song (even though Galveston's just down the freeway and holds many, many memories throughout my lifetime), but I don't think it would have made it up the charts if he'd sung it as Jimmy intended it.

Before becoming a star on his own (clumsy phrasing but I couldn't come up with better) Campbell was one of the gaggle of studio musicians called the "Wrecking Crew". They were excellent musicians, but they also had the ability of knowing how to tweak a song to maximize its marketability, while making the song compatible for live performance by musicians of slightly lesser talents (more clumsy phrasing).
