Parts of Texas and southern Louisiana are feeling like a steam room amid a dangerous heat wave that’s set to last more than a week. Blistering heat and stifling humidity have already combined to push the heat index above 120 degrees in spots, posing a significant danger to vulnerable populations and those without adequate access to cooler environments.
The Lone Star State broke heat records on Thursday and Friday, and many more are expected to fall over the coming days.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said at a news conference Saturday that he spoke with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the organization that operates the state’s electrical grid, ahead of the heat wave. Officials there assured him they could meet what “may be a record power demand” as Texas residents try to cool their homes, Abbott said.
Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories affect more than 40 million people this weekend. The warnings, which are the most dire type of heat alert the National Weather Service issues, extend from the border of Mexico and southwest Texas to the border of southern Louisiana and Mississippi. Population centers in the warning zone include Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Galveston and Lufkin in Texas and New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Alexandria in Louisiana.

That is some heat. We have had a cooler and rainy start to the summer. I just checked and the current temp here is 67 with mostly cloudy skies.
-
Yikes! That's pretty darn hot! It's one thing to have it hot, it's quite another when the humidity is up there as well.

We reached 90 with 67% humidity (which is decent) and winds of 13mph. Having a breeze definitely helps.
-
It's a 113 here currently, WET HEAT, in New Braunfels TX.
I'm Blessed to be so Comfortable.
-
It's as hot here as it usually is in August. Due mainly to the humidity.
I'm just praying that this is our hot spell and the rest of the summer won't be so brutal.
Everybody stay safe!
-
Currently at our house it's 101 with a heat index of 114.
-
I remember, it was some time right after I came home from the Navy in 78 we had a summer with 40 days over 100 degrees. Temps and not indexes.

Somebody blow on the windmills - we don’t need an encore performance.

The humidity is powerful in St. Pete. This stuff started way too soon.

:pondering: Kind of irks me where all radar abruptly stops at the border.
...as if to say, MEXICAN LIVES DON'T MATTER!!
Not a good look, imho.
-
Don't look like radar to me. From an old Radar Tech.
-
Currently at my house it's 104deg 41%humidity and 120deg heat index.

Good gravy .... that's cold for this time of year. It's almost the end of June!

We’re having one of the coldest junes on record I heard.
-
Temps here in the Florida of Iowa have been nothing but bone average since late winter. Excellent spring, have barely cracked 90F just a few times, 80's forecasted for at least a couple of weeks.

This Heat Wave has been Brutal and way too early in the Climate Change Schedule, we usually get this $hit in August and September.
Though I've been blessed again~a Beautiful Gully Washer is plying its passion as the sun sets through my area.
-
Raining all week on and off here in Washington, D.C..
Heavy clouds, high of 68 degrees tomorrow...81 on Friday with more storms.
I'll take this all day long.

Last year we had a brutal heat wave. Before I had AC, such things tested my sanity, now I hardly notice them. Just more pool weather.

It's hot as hades due mainly to the humidity. I'm in northeast Tx and it feels like Houston.
It is raining big time right now. The good side..it will cool it off for the evening. The bad side, this weekend will be terrible. The other good side...even though early, maybe the people that come out here to shoot off fireworks won't burn us down.
-
Doesn't that happen every summer in Texas?
