5 things to watch in critical NC race
By Max Greenwood - 09/10/19 01:06 PM EDT
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Voters are heading to the polls across south-central North Carolina to cast their ballots in the neck-and-neck race in the 9th District, a crucial special election that may very well serve as a bellwether for President Trump and Republicans’ electoral odds in 2020.
The district, which stretches from the Charlotte suburbs in the west to rural Bladen County in the east, has been in GOP hands for nearly 60 years, and Trump carried the district by more than 11 points in 2016.
But last year’s regularly scheduled election showed then-Republican candidate Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready separated by only 905 votes, signaling that the district’s political terrain may be shifting.
The results from that election were scrapped earlier this year after state election officials uncovered a sweeping ballot fraud scheme allegedly operated by a contractor for Harris’s campaign, and Harris declined to run in the ensuing special election.
Now, McCready and the new Republican candidate, state Sen. Dan Bishop, are locked in a dead heat, and both candidates concede that Tuesday’s election will likely come down to turnout.
Polls close at 7:30 p.m.
Here’s what to watch on Election Day in North Carolina’s 9th District:

Hate to say it, but even with only about 20% in, looks like the Dem has it.

Yep. No same-day results from Meck and Union is mostly done.

How any thinking person can vote for any democrat anywhere these days is a complete mystery to me.

The Dems will crow about this for days...a referendum on Trump

Wow. According to the NCBOE at 8:49p EST, with 39% if the precincts and 15% of the vote in the gap has narrowed to 1.5% with Bishop slighly behind.
I'd really like to eat crow on this one.

NCBOE has the Republican Bishop up by 400 votes with 56% of the precincts and 18% of the vote in.

Well, FWIW, Don Lemon is now saying this should be an easy win for the Republicans.....so this may be one of those times when the Dem loses and becomes a win for the media.

Unless the NCBOE website is glitchy, only about a quarter of the vote cast has been counted.
Looks like a massive amount of early voting.

Lemon looks like he's going to have to excuse himself --- he looks physically ill.
McCready is the Dems' golden boy ---the prototype for 2020... military, a family man and campaigned for over a year.

IMHO, the pubs winning these 2 NC races is no more significant on the upcoming 2020 election, than if they had lost tonight.

Rush had doubts Repubs would win tonight...
I felt better after last night's rally @mystery-ak . It was filled to capacity with an overflow crowd watching outside. The crowd was pumped .... with a capital "P". The VP introduced POTUS ... who gave a barnburner speech. Hell, even Bishop was on fire last night.
I'm so happy it worked out for Bishop ... and the President.

You're just pissed off because Bolton's been neutralized.
When it comes to elections, when you put your a$$, prestige and reputation on the line for one race ... then you get to make that judgment @Bigun Until then, I personally would prefer you'd just say "thank you".
Bishop just gave an acceptance speech where he spent half of it thanking the President and the other half bashing democrats. He gets it.
-
I'm used to it.

F that @Right_in_Virginia! I'm fine with the president pulling out all the stops to help the man but he should keep his damned mouth shut now!

The Dems had their golden boy in D-9 and spend a boatload of cash, in a special election under a GOP cloud of scandal, and still came up short when they thought they could win.
Let's hope that sends them into a tailspin for awhile.
-
How any thinking person can vote for any democrat anywhere these days is a complete mystery to me.
@Bigun
They are not thinking people. They are mostly yankee retirees and blacks voting Dim "fo all de free stuff".
Not a single rational thought to be found in any of them.

@Bigun
I agree.
Still, look at where we would be now without him.
He is FAR from a perfect man or a perfect candidate, but he IS the man and candidate we need for now. If it had been the "standard go along to get along" alleged Republican candidate spewed out by the RNC insiders,we would now be a One Party Nation under the RULE of leftist loons, and revolution would be in the air.
When you consider all that,Trump is a gift and we should be grateful we still have a thin chance to save America from being a member of "World Wide Government,Inc".
-
Bishop only lost by a couple of hundred votes in the east, which is historically a blue dog democrat region. It is likely that Trump helped with the Fayetteville rally ... but he referred to a 17 point deficit in his tweet, and I'm not sure where he is getting that. The polls have been tight ever since the process started in 2017.

Trump SHOULD have confined himself to congratulating the winners of the special elections in N.C. last night without injecting himself into it. Everyone already knows the part he played and there was absolutely no need for HIM to tell them!
