Are Floods Dramatically Increasing Due to Climate Change?
Part one of a two-part series: The natural hazard of floods.

Flooding is among the most consequential natural hazards and globally accounts for tens of thousands of deaths per year and hundreds of billions of dollars of damage per year.

When rivers overrun their banks or flash floods occur from extreme rainfall, many media outlets will reflexively report on the flooding as though we are in a fundamentally new situation due to climate change.

Consider the following headlines:

The Washington Post when major flooding hit the United States last summer: “Floods, fires and deadly heat are the alarm bells of a planet on the brink.”

The New York Times headline reported major floods in Vermont last year, “Showed the Limits of America’s Efforts to Adapt to Climate Change.”

Sea Surface Temperatures: West Versus East Coast.

Perhaps, this blog spends too much time talking about the atmosphere, so to make amends today, let's see what is happening to the temperature of the ocean surface.  And see whether anything unusual is going on.

Let's start with yesterday's sea surface temperatures around North America (below).  Sorry, it is all in °C.   Keep in mind that 10°C is roughly 50F,  20°C is around 68F, and 30°C is approximately 86F.

The eastern Pacific near the West Coast is cold (about 50F), with central California's waters a bit cooler than ours. You must head to the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula to find the water warm enough for comfortable swimming.

The East Coast is a study in contrasts.  The water off of New England is crazy cold (dropping below 7C), while the uber-warm Gulf Stream is found along the west coast of Florida, moves past the Carolinas, and then heads northeastward into the Atlantic.

GREGORY WRIGHTSTONE: Scientific Report Pours Cold Water On Major Talking Point Of Climate Activists

AUTHOR OF INCONVENIENT FACTS: THE SCIENCE THAT AL GORE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW

The purveyors of climate doom will not tolerate the good news of our planet thriving because of modest warming and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. However, a recent scientific paper concludes that an optimistic vision for Earth and its inhabitants is nonetheless justified.

Widely accepted data show an overall greening of Earth resulting from a cycle of natural warming that began more than 300 years ago and from industrialization’s additions of CO2 that started in the 19th century and accelerated with vigorous economic activity following World War II.

Also attributed to these and other factors is record crop production, which now sustains 8 billion people—ten times the population prior to the Industrial Revolution. The boost in atmospheric CO2 since 1940 alone is linked to yield increases for corn, soybeans and wheat of 10%, 30% and 40%, respectively.

California Mayor Sounds the Alarm as Migrants Hit 25-Year High
Story by Nick Mordowanec • 14h

ACalifornia mayor says a record number of border encounters in his county is further proof of an unprecedented lack of federal enforcement.

El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells told Newsweek via phone that in April the San Diego County sector surpassed all other sectors in border encounters for the first time in 25 years. San Diego experienced 37,370 encounters, surpassing Tucson (31,240), El Paso (30,410) and Del Rio (10,275).

"We've become the No. 1 sector in America for crossing the border," Wells said, warning about a humanitarian crisis confounded by security risks for locals and the nation.

The El Cajon Station, responsible for roughly 10 miles of international border with Mexico, is 18 miles northeast of San Diego sector headquarters.

CNN Panelist on the cross examination of Stormy Daniels: “Her responses were disastrous.. ‘Do you hate Donald Trump?’.. ‘Yes’ — of course she does… When the witness hates the person whose liberty is at stake, that’s a big damn deal and she’s putting out Tweets fantasizing about him being in jail.. That really undermines the credibility.”. (Video)
