Being a postal carrier doesn’t seem like a bad gig. You get to walk around the neighborhood, drop some mail off, get to chat with residents and passersby. Of course, if you live in a cold-weather area, it might not be so fun in February slogging through freezing temperatures and slushy sidewalks. Still, I imagine being a coal miner would be a lot tougher.

But the life of a postal carrier has become more difficult in recent times, as more and more of them are getting robbed, all around the nation—sometimes even at gunpoint. Postal union executive vice president Paul Barner said conditions are growing intolerable:

“The National Association of Letter Carriers is outraged and angered by the assaults, armed robberies and even murders that America’s letter carriers increasingly face as they deliver the mail. These attacks are completely unacceptable,” he said.

The postal service needs to get some social workers on the street since there aren't enough police anymore.

Maybe the postal carriers haven't noticed that Americans in general have been robbed assaulted and murdered more, why do they feel they should be treated special? Might I suggest that they go, ahem, POSTAL on the miscreants attacking them? Or do they expect to have armed escorts on their routes at the further expense of USPS customers?

And I bet 80% of the uptick is in liberal bastions. I talk to my mailman several times a week, would help protect him, just a good ole fellow that listens to a lot of AM conservative news while delivering his mail route.

Throw thieves in jail. Charge bail proportional to the crime and risk of flight. Prosecute thieves and thugs for their full crimes, no watered down plea deals. In about 6 months to a year thuglings and thug-wannabes will get the message and increasing numbers of criminals will be in jail or prison instead of on the streets committing more crimes. In that same 6 months to a year, law-abiding citizens will start noticing the difference.
